So I just binged through this show. I must say that its premise, MC character concept, and yuri are very good. Too bad that it's a mediocre show despite all that.

Nene is a fantastic MC, not only because how /u/ she is. Fun, energetic yet not annoying, happy-go-lucky yet not airheaded, talented in a meaningful way. She doesn't care what people say not because she's too dumb to register, but more in the alpha kind of way (molesting Clarin, stopping her aunt's plans). And her talent in controling a cyborg body is really exciting to see.

The yuri in this is hilarious. While the "fingering to transform" is heavily fanservicey, it manages to stay being funny instead of gross. The substantial romantic attraction going on between Nene and Clarin through out the series also makes it feels satisfying as opposed to, say, Vividred.

Now on to the bad... This show has got a horrible director: action scenes are hilariously slow with unimpressive henshin footage. Low production value hits this show hard (I cringed the most at the chicken bros episode, the fights were just urgh). I'm also angry at the dumb episodic plot that do the setting no justice. Come on, you have such a cool premise (futuristic cyberbunk superheroes fighting evil organization) with such a cool MC (one-of-a-kind motion genius), and you dumb everything down to yet another cute girl doing cute thing anime?

Nene can be a cute, fun, talented, rabid lesbian while actually saving the world in serious missions. She can hack and reveal a minister's corruption instead of cooking at a charity. She can shut down an illegal war-robot factory instead of sewing a dress. She can stop a pirate ship from attacking a luxury cruise instead of running around playing a bus for other people. I get that hero is also those who do small things, but if we're honest about the impact, hotblooded actions and epic scale battles will always win.

Pardon the rant, I just like Nene too much to see her burried in this shit of an anime.

I'm merely talking about it from an "in-universe" perspective. In the mentioned GitS, it's shown that they can taste, thus the viewer/reader can accept the tech for it exists. In Pandora, it's shown that they have a "nutritional cartridge".
There should be a lot more to sensations than just signal sent to brain. Because the brain already has the presets to "convert" the signal into a sensation, whereas a program would not.
I don't know, obviously, it just seems like there is a lot more to it. "Soft" and "hot" are much different in that regard as well.
'Course, I might obviously just be wrong about all that.

But there really isn't. There's no ephemeral imperceptible... thing that affects it in any way. Receptors receive input A, brain has a pattern for acting when it receives input A, it acts on that pattern. Patterns can be mismatched, signals can be processed wrongly, but ultimately, it all there is. Input and output.
Now, recording or imitating input can be difficult, and it's not clear whether the publicly available technology can do that. So far all cyborgs/robots we've seen have no sense of pain or possibly any tactile sensations. They can see and hear, though, so that's something. I'm not sure how much of Nene is cybernized; if her vision and auditory system are artificial and can work with her brain, then there is a way to connect external cybernized organs to the brain and make it process the input. If that's the case, then, theoretically, there's nothing preventing them from building an artificial gustatory system and connecting it to the cyberbrain. Or even using an existing one to record input-output patterns.

Takumi and Uzal clearly have technology far beyond what is publicly available, though, so who knows what they can do.

It's about patterns recorded in the brain. I'm sure there is research on how they form and work, but I'm not familiar with it, to be honest. Either way, it shouldn't be a problem, considering Nene's brain is human.
Distinguishing between flavors without the olfactory system would be complicated, though, but simple taste perception shouldn't be extremely difficult to achieve. Although scientists in Pandora's universe probably don't bother with things like that, considering that most people can barely operate prosthetic limbs, let alone a full prosthetic body. Things like "taste" or "smell" aren't the top priority right now.

Google up Hugh Herr and watch his TED speech, interesting stuff. Sadly the current technology only works with people who previously had limbs, it doesn't work if you are missing the nerves receptors, basically if you aren't born with an arm then chances are this technology won't work for you. However its pretty Deus Ex type stuff, sadly you would need to charge everyday I think.

That's probably what people mean when they complain here. Claring might be them trying to get it to sound closer to the JP thing. Clarin would be pronounced like Karin/Carin in English. As in the "a" would be voiced. "Claarin". Claring may be different here.


Well, I don't really know for sure. But some name-changes are like this. For example Jakuri->Jacqli. Jacqli in English sounds about the same as Jakuri (蛇刳 (ジャクリ) ) in Japanese.

It's actually not easy to localize names like this, but in theory it's the right thing to do. Not everyone knows how to read JP names. And to make it worse, some names aren't even meant to be read the Japanese way or are some mix. (Clarion is actually a good example. Japanese people don't really use "r", or rather they don't differentiate between "r" and "l" with it sounding closer to "l" than "r", but the name is SUPPOSED to be Clarion with an r in it. So Japanese people just usually can't/don't pronounce it correctly)
So with pure Japanese names it's easy, but as soon as the name is fictional or may have western influences, it gets hard. Although Japanese names usually only get romanized, which results in English speaking people having heavy misconceptions about how to actually pronounce the names, which part should be voiced and so on. Well, it ain't easy. (Actually it is, but why would your average person bother with learning this? I was the same for a long time.)

Voice acting is not enough. You have to have watched quite a lot of anime, before you actually catch on common words, phrases and start paying attention to how names are exactly pronounced. At first it's just some random gibberish where you don't understand anything. It's easy to forget once you have watched enough. But I can pretty much guarantee you that this is a BIG thing. We probably ALL went through that stage too.
On the flipside, if you KNOW how it's pronounced anyway, there's also no real reason why you need the original romanization, as long as the name reads the same as you pronounce and hear it.

In other words, a name as close as possible to the original pronunciation has only advantages. For those who know how it's pronounced it doesn't matter, while those who don't know will also get it right that way.


If they'd actually use Clarin, you might be happy as you can pronounce it right, but you'd probably cringe when you hear other people pronounce that name. So I dunno if that's really a much better solution. Though in this case you can probably argue that the English pronunciation of Clarin is correct, but that'd be a rather fundamental question. How right/wrong is the JP pronunciation in the first place?
But no matter what, there's no perfect way unfortunately. Kinda like trying to translate suffixes when they don't fit with the setting or the question to leave them or cut them in general.

"Cla-ring" is nowhere near close the original pronunciation. If you want to keep it as close to original as possible, why not just romanize names? "Kurarin" is as close as you can get without writing it with kana. Even the manga's "Clararin" is closer than "Cla-ring", since it maintains four syllables just like the original "Kurarin". Of course, it kinda ruins the whole point about Nene -shortening- the name, as "Clararin" is the same length as "Clarion".
