I thought it was rather appropriate to show how the show is moving forward. Keeping the same villians around for too long makes them stale. He was a cool character who got his final hurrah, and it was really just his time to go, especially with all the hinting that Cinder isn't the 'big' Big Bad. Not much use for a character that is an underling to an underling. Plus it could be used as a plot point for Neo in the future.

Someone caught an interesting detail: Yang is crying when she charges Adam after seeing Blake get stabbed. Those two really do love each other.
