A whole thread and no one's mentioned Agents of the Realms or Wilde Life? They're both western webcomics, both have lesbians, and both have running kickstarters to publish their first volumes. Both kickstarters have also already succeeded, so at this point, you're just raking in stretch goals.

So heterosexual characters from panel 1 who show interest into opposite gender is also called pandering?

Also making the characters lesbians first and saying that out loud either in cast page or comic at least prevents the infamous bait and switch lesbians trope going when in the middle author makes possible lesbians bisexuals with the old saying "but I never said she was a lesbian officialy she was just into girls phase and now is into guys" plot going.

Plus if you read yaoi webcomics mostly all of them makes the characters gay from start and no one has troubles with that.

Only problem is if your comic is aimed mostly at straight males and you plan girl/girl occurance to be just plausible fanservice to spice things up to be discarded later, I hope not.

I like romance developing through story like any other person and making MC a lesbian officialy really doesn't make the comic a devil work like many webcomic authors belive where they are afraid to make ones and instead go with bisexual/pansexual pandering cause that is more socially accepted by the biggest readership of straight guys and also girls variety.

Like I asked, would a hero going home to his girlfriend/wife at the end of chapter one feel like pandering? Obviously not. There are certainly ways you can make it feel like pandering, depending on other aspects of the story, but the idea itself shouldn't feel like pandering or awkward to introduce.

Character casually mentioning that they're into girls isn't pandering. Rebellious lesbian with multi-colored hair, tattoos and piercing all over her body, yelling "OH I'D LOVE ME SOME WET MACAROONS RIGHT NOW" and "GIRL POWER IN DA HOUSE" on every page since page one is pretty clearly pandering.

As you said, it depends on how it introduced, but looking through some of the popular webcomics with homosexual characters in them, I can understand why some people would consider "gay from page one" pandering, especially if the story is SoL, with no plot to distract the reader.

It REALLY and I mean REALLY depends on the story you want to tell, but going for lesbians from panel one lets you in on some powerful character development for your protagonists if you should chose to take it.

If your main protag is a womanizer who has a different girl in her bed every night and the story, or at least a subplot, is about her moving past that and into a steady relationship, you can open up with her kicking the other girl out of her apartment or whatever.

In Gunnerkrig everyone is absolutely fine with Kat dating a girl and treats it like a normal thing, but there were still a few chapters of her trying to emphasize her femininity in attempt to compensate and times of self doubt, and that is drama.

Also, use the tools you have, if you're doing fantasy, remember that you are free of certain restrictions in the story you want to tell.

Because teenagers struggle with their sexual identities, and Sean really cares for Alis but doesn't feel like she can give her everything she deserves, and probably fears that their relationship might become a wreck if she just did whatever she wanted. Remember that Sean is super srs about everything she does.

Honestly, if instead of Alis there was a crazy girl that didn't care at all about Sean's feelings, and turned all "we've had sex we're a couple and we're gonna be FOREVER" and possessive/yandere as fuck, it'd be pretty bad too.

Plus, despite Alis being older and acting older, she doesn't really look so, and Sean just found out that she has a sadistic streak and might or not like girls, you can't blame her for being a bit confused.

It might turn yuri related later seeing all the extra posters artist make of Veloce and Blackbird as a pairing, but then author herself said in one reply that she isn't sure she will go with that in the comic itself since she's afraid what a reaction it migth give, so if she indeed will decide not to show any romance for main girl I hope she will stay true to that both on the yuri and hetero front(there's that Vocruen guy who main girl longs for but every sign shows it's rather missing big brother family issue than something romantic for now).

Hell it can be a moderately interesting talking point how the ablity to easily modify your mind and body results in not really caring about the bodies of potential love interests .
