Oh yeah it's pretty decent. Think of it like this.
40 to 59 you're probably using heroic+fp gear and then at 60 you got the sixty gear which you can use til 65 where you'd start looking at outlander gear or I believe, though I can't check since I'm away from the game, you can tear out all of the mods in the legacy gear and stuff them into oranges.

Another reason why it can be useful is that you can use the gear as holders of mods that you want to bounce between characters or something. I only recently got my Femquisitor to 60 and then I got distracted with smuggler and BH.

Powertech is kind of on the up because of it's ease of use. AP is the go to and user friendly one while pyro needs a more experienced hand.
Mercenaries are a weird bag. Both were and are fine for leveling but back during 3.0 IO was better for raids with tight resource management for better sustained dps than Arsenal which was more Aoe based, had easy resource management and could easily switch targets.

Pinecest is really only the huge ship here on 4chan. Elsewhere there's lots of Mabifica, and its biggest problem is that it plays second fiddle to Billdip, which eclipses everything else nowadays.

The vibroblade can't be upgraded actually. Closest you get is tossing in a crystal for "color".
The bulwark lightsaber, think of it as a shell or a skin though yeah you'd have to figure out how to use mods if you wanna use lightsaber skins.

You buy mods, rightclick on the lightsaber and insert the new ones. You can do that without using an upgrading station but lose the old mods. You can buy those for crystals on the station.
Also I would advice actually using a lightsaber crystal and because it's missing one too there if you look closely.

Here this is my current up to date Liughtsaber, which is the same that I got through my story quest and have kept up to date ever since.

The Vibroblade may be good NOW, but as you can see the only mod option is has is a color crystal. In a few levels you can put shit into the Lightsaber that makes it better.

And how did you survive up until that point?
Rule of thumb is usually to mod uo all your gear, armor included, every 8-10 levels during story mode.
