Some form of enjoyment would be ideal. For example some fluffy thoughts that spring forth looking at something that catches your eye on a commute that rots your teeth. To energetic sex-capades brought on by personal depravity. Sometimes both... Obligation is a terrible muse, especially if your not being paid to do it.

If it's just simple writer's block maybe try a new project, with some far off idea thrown in for a one off?

Personally love expanding on pictures and seeing where it could have come from or gone to. Even if the end results are horrible and never see the light of day or straddling the line between "shit" and "meh". I still do it because it's an enjoyable thing to come up with in the first place and writing it helps keep it "on track"/not forgotten. Not conducive to long form though as I have learned.

Pick an idea and see where it takes you. Take your established characters and try to fit them into it. If it actually works with whatever narrative your attempting originally, even better.

This is probably nonsense, but I hope it helps. There are exceptionally good "muses" to work with in this neck of the woods...
