Marmite isn't a manga, at least originally, but it did pretty much lay the groundwork for yuri in the 21st century. A little something beyond smut and dead lesbians.

Beyond that, while it's more well-known for its anime adaptation, Kannazuki no Miko, among the other '04 heavyweights are the cross to Marimite's jab for yuri's big one-two. Big watershed moment of yuri in otaku media. If not full blown yuri, at least responsible for the rise in use in yuri subtext and yuri elements as a viable allure for audiences, rather than just something the staff/author put in because they like yuri. That is pretty much /u/'s daily bread and butter.

Thank you.

Sailor Moon. Had an openly lesbian couple that was happy, survived and even started a family. Also, many yuri mangaka got their start in Sailor Moon doujinshi, including Morinaga, Morishima and Shizuru Hayashiya.

Shoujo Sect
>>
Even though it's not my favorite, you can't deny that Girl Friends initiated a LOT of sisters into yuri, myself included.
>>
>>1891907
Same, it is THE most stereotypical thing ever, but that is why every onee-sama should read it. It's really just pure yuri all the way and kinda introduces you to this 'world' of lily love. Though, it's one of the better written plain all-girl school stories anyway.
>>
Wife and Wife, Nijipuri but most likely it was Hanjuku Joshi for me

Today?

Murcielago. It shows that yuri can be so much more than retarded schoolgirls crushing ambiguously. No, it can be about serial killers, shit-crazy cults and the mafia.

I loved that one, agreed.

Why is the word 'wife' so qt and fluffy?
>>
For manga currently in print, I'm going to go with Shinozaki-san, because it has good comedy, a focus on yuri, and above all, developing and interesting characters you care about acting in realistic (if exaggerated) ways about their feelings.
>>
>>1892333
In that case what about ones forgotten by time like Tora Ni Tsubasa

I will always wait for you
>>
Hard to say in terms of manga what's most important. Most of the flagship /u/ material from back in the mid-2000's were anime: Marimite, YamiBo, KnM, MaiHiME...

But currently, I'd say Citrus is probably the biggest. Localized, very popular, very polarizing.
>>
>>1893996
I suppose it's fitting that the most 'important' would also be amongst the worst. Shit sells.
>>
>>1894006

You being upset and jealous of popular series doesn't change the fact that they tend to be the things that introduce people to fandoms
>>
>>1894006
Butthurt /a/non, it's cute you think those series are bad. Please continue cryingt about them.

Not even the anon you are replying to, but the most defining trait of Citrus is that it is poorly written cheap melodrama. It certainly doesn't change the fact that it's very important, but it's equally true that it's saddening to see that such a low quality manga is the flagship of our beloved genre. Just because you like and enjoy something you can still admit its flaws, nothing wrong with that.
>>
>>1894059
It's not like it's a juggernaut, anon. I don't get how it caught on to such an extent either, but we should fight for our fragile yuri series when they have a chance to change things up.

The one that isn't a manga but a lesbian 1919 novel by some Japanese dyke.

It's actually quite good too, I strongly suggest you read it sometime.

Google search results for "Japanese lesbian novel 1919". I assume you're referring to the one named in the first and third results, Yaneura No Nishojo / Two Virgins In The Attic?

I always liked Hana Monogatari better myself, but there's no denying that Yaneura no Nishojo is the defining work of the genre.

Strange. I used google and it gave me 16 results, all of which are the manga it's from. Dynasty seems to be having some issues for me right now, but this should be it.

Nowadays, Yuru Yuri is a great way to insert yourself in the world of both yuri and SoL. The two genres go hand in hand, in most cases.

I'm guessing that a few year from now on people will be claiming they got into yuri because of it.
>>
>>1902203
Same here. All I managed to find was Yellow Rose, one of the stories from Hana Monogatari. Also, it says everywhere that none of her other works have been translated.
>>
>>1891489
I'd like to say Kannazuki or girlfriends but mainly cause i love them. There's probably some obscure old mango that my grandma read where you see the first oneesama or some shit.
>>
>>1904873
Ever since I was a kid I've secretly loved fictional lesbians, but I think Yuru Yuri is what made me finally really get into the genre. Also, after watching the anime, I read the manga and realised that I only thought I disliked manga because all of the ones I tried to read were shit.

Thanks, Yuru Yuri. If not for you, I probably would've gotten into it from Yuyushiki or something anyway.

Aoi Hana is the best, but the most important is Girlfriends without a doubt it's probably the most popular and the one that a lot of us started with.

It might not be the best manga but it spawned the show which is extremely important since it was the first full on constant yuri anime that isn't hentai. Everything before it used the Yuri as an end point or a side story.
>>
>>1905087
>first full on constant yuri anime that isn't hentai

No?

By your own standards, Haruka and Yuu didn't even officially get together as a couple by the end of the series.
>>
>>1905093
my own standards? They start making out right away. Just because they're retarded doesn't mean they're not a full blown couple from the start.
>>
>>1905095
Yea, hence why your >>1905087 post is completely wrong about it being the "First" full on yuri.

Please even Aoi Hana and Sasameki Koto are yuri from the start.

The whole premise of SK is "I'm being friendzoned by my lesbian friend".

Aoi Hana might not be yuri in your face all the time, but the main character is lesbian and not virgin since the beginning.
>>
>>1905425
Yeah but the realtionships don't start fromt eh begenning. It's a 'getting into a lesbian relationship story' not a 'lesbian relationship story'.
>>
>>1905425
>"I'm being friendzoned by my lesbian friend"
But Mitsuki isn't the main character, Haruka and Yuu are and they are lesbians.
