The girl wasn't an issue for me. The boy was annoying, and did get too much screen time, but I don't see how they could have told that part of the story at was already in place in the movie (which takes place after the OVAs) without him. It was unfortunate, but at least that is the end of us having to put up with him.

The OVAs are ok, but the movie is great. Even having seen it a ton of times I still find it emotional. Based on the time line of occurrences you could watch the OVAs first, and then the movie which might make the OVAs more enjoyable. Since I saw the movie long before the OVAs I (and many others) didn't have that opportunity. Also watching the OVAs after the movie makes them more like flashbacks (which are usually less interesting and exciting).

So I'm re-watching the 1st season and boy do they zoom up on vaginas a lot. I've always thought that Miyafuji was a boring protagonist, but damn, she's the gayest character in this show.

What a shame, if only EilaNya were the main characters instead.

And the sad part is that the translation ends right when the major yuri was just about to get started. Of course, since the author died their story likely won't be completed, but I'd at least like to read what he'd already done (Vol 1-3).

Okay, let me elaborate.
The series ended with Miyafuji losing all her magical powers in a desperate final attack against the final villain. The movie continues on from there, and we see that she's doing her best to make a difference and help people even though she no longer has any powers. That is commendable, and says a lot of good things about her character. You don't need to have your main character blowing stuff up to make people like her.

The ending ruins all that by spontaneously giving her all her powers back for no apparent reason just when she needed it again. That reeks of Deus ex Machina and Mary Sue.

Now I understand that they had to give her back her powers somehow so that she could be back fighting alongside the rest of the team in future seasons/OVAs. They just went about it all wrong. I would have written it so that she manifested her shield just for a moment to save a bystander's life before collapsing of exhaustion right after. Then the rest of the movie would have been about the others saving her, and finally end it with a montage of her training for weeks to gradually bring her power back to regular levels. That way it wouldn't have felt forced.

The main reason I say this is because on Sanya and Eila's CD they practice that finger pointing thing they do in the credits specifically for the propaganda. The song they mimic is also perfectly in sync with the lyrics in the ending as well.

I don't know if this particular Eila anon lurks these threads, but if you do, would you mind sharing one of your custom daki images or at least the artist you commissioned for your custom daki covers? You have the cutest pillows and as I don't particularly care for her official one, I wanted to get a custom one similar to yours, if not the same one if you are willing to share. I have a question: Is there a specific work that I should start with if I want to get into Strike Witches?
i.e. should I watch the anime first, the main manga, or some other work that's part of the series?

There are only two lines of continunity:

Main Series:
- 1st season of anime
- "The Sky That Connects Us" manga (1 volume), which serves as a bridge between the two series.
- 2nd season of anime
- The movie

The "Africa witches" series of semi-official doujinshi by Nogami Takeshi:
- Witch in Africa
- Tiger in Desert 1-5

The other stuff can be read in any order. Lots of people like the expanded universe better, so it might even be worth it to read it before the anime. I'd definitely check out the Suomus Misfits Squadron light novels.

The "Maidens in the Sky" manga can be skipped. It's basically an alternate retelling of the 1st season's intro, but somewhat off-tone.

All the Witch in Africa/Stern von Afrika/etc texts were incorporated, and touched up for continuity, in Kei's Report #1. The Kei's Report series continues from there. The comics were also compiled into one single, official release. In short, it's all canon now.

The early bits of the 504th manga are more or less a prelude to Season 2, and the later half is concurrent with the first few episodes. Also, the Suomus and Isle of Wight manga take place prior to Season 1.

I think you guys should have just waited for the new stuff to be released, and make a judgement after seeing it. More characters mean more stories that can each wrap up in a reasonable amount of time. If you had less characters with less stories to tell things would likely get dragged out and seem excruciatingly slow.

Saki has a lot of characters in its story, and I wouldn't call that a negative.

Some people whined about Yoshka when the original Strike Witches came out, but I like/liked her, and I think the story wouldn't have been as good or suspenseful without her.

Bashing a character before you even she her character, hear her story, or experience the dynamics of her relationships means you've already decided your not going to enjoy it, and that's a shame.

The anime will probably only 12 episodes like the first 2 seasons were. 8 characters to focus on already was enough. Plus people wanted Eila and Sanya to show up, and that would be 10. Cramming too many characters means that nobody gets enough screentime, which was a complaint about the first 2 seasons.

Disagreed as heck after seeing how S1 and S2 were handled.
Girls und Panzer is so shallow when it comes to the characters since it's really more of a sports anime feat some cute girls. I'm not really bashing the younger Karibuchi sister neither her squadron leader onee-san. Some of us are just bummed they had to make these additions to the cast we've known for half a decade as the 502nd unit with 8 witches.
