I've just caught up to the translation and felt like a thread was in order.
A bit strange this manga doesn't seem particularly popular on /u/.
So many couples with varied degrees of subtext, varied personalities and varied dynamics.
It's prime material for shipping and/or fanfiction.
Not to mention the local lesbian pervert.
Though for a 20+ volumes manga there's a criminally low amount of fanart.
There's a disproportionate amount of Yuho x Kei, considering they aren't even sisters-in-arms.
For the onee-chan who read the raws, do they get some development later on?
Or maybe Yuho is just popular with the ladies.
Keep dreaming, Tatewaki.
Science baby for Jun and Yuho (well, I think - I can't read moon).

I say it's because it's difficult to find the early translated chapters. Significant barrier of entry.
>>1775913
>difficult to find the early translated chapters
Hard to find downloadable versions, but everything that isn't on Dynasty is at least on Batoto.
How yuri is this anyway? I've seen it discussed occasionally over the years but I don't really know anything about it.
>>1775923
>How yuri is this anyway?
So far, all the yuri has been either subtext or comedy - and frequently both at the same time. Unfortunately I doubt it's going to change anytime soon.
>>1775926
Meh. I figured. I don't think I'm interested enough in the concept to bother reading it without yuri to sweeten the deal.
I remember liking the lecherous lesbian ninja girl with the earth and wind magic and the cute necromancer girl. I like me sword mages.
At the risk of repeating information, chapter 83 is out.

https://yuriproject.net/hayate_x_blade_ch83/
By the look of it, chapter 84 shouldn't be far behind.
>>1775928
Although it's technically subtext, it's the most in your face as you can get without them full on kissing. Although there is at least one character that is overtly gay, even though no one ever labels themselves. But really, the series is hilarious slapstick comedy and the art is easy on the eyes. It's a wild ride, and it gets genuine laughs from me, so.
>>1778289
>Although it's technically subtext
It's more often yuri comedy than yuri subtext, even without taking into account the perverted lesbian comic relief. There is still some more "serious" subtext but it's less frequent.
>>1778289
Is not subtext when the feeling are explicity like Kuroko Shirai
This is not a subtext series, the girls are canonically lesbians. However, it's not a romantic series and no one is dating anyone. There are one-sided crushes and there are budding feelings everywhere with the main focus on actions, school politics, comraderie and comedy.
>>1778808
This. It's just like Yuru Yuri: canon lesbians, no romance, lots of comedy and ship teases.
>>1778787
There's also the fact that once in a interview, the author said that to her, a girl is always naturally paired with another girl. Lesbians is the standard to girls to her.
>>1778954
>Lesbians is the standard to girls to her.
One of /u/s, then.
>>1781199
It's subtext. And the focus is on fighting and shounen-style friendship anyway.

Wonder if I should start reading this again or if translations will die off or another two years right when I'm getting into it.
Will probably have to start from the beginning anyway just to remember who everyone is.
>>1792773
I am caught up to the tankoubon release of Hayate × Blade 2 (not volume 2, but the second series which picks up where the other left off somewhere at the start of Hayate's second year). Raws seem to have died out, even of Ultra Jump magazine itself.
I'll field any plot and character related questions if anyone is interested.
>>1792783
What's going on with Akira and Sae?
They're my fav (and OTP)
>>1792785
Still going strong. They were demoted after losing to Hitsugi/Shizuku but went back on the student council after that.
Sae's fiancé never posed a threat, if that was your concern.
>>1792793
Nah, kept seeing some fanart of Sae and Ayana, but I think that was just some random shipper on pixiv more than anything
>>1792874
Well, english translations are way behind the japanese chapters.
>>1792874
That's actually hilarious when taking into consideration that Sae has becomes much friendlier with Maki, and that Jun seems to enjoy flirting with Sae partly out of genuine attraction but also because it gets Akira mad.
>>1792881
wow Sae's such a babe. Akira better lock it down soon
>>1792881
Ehehe, I enjoyed Jun's interactions with Sae during the mountain hoshitori, so good to know that there are more along the way.
>>1792783
Same here, I'm also caught up. I've had no problem getting the recent magazine raws off Share though?
>>1792874
Yeah, there's that one artist who ships everyone with Ayana, even Nancy and Hitsugi. All the more power to them.
Any other fans of Nancy x Maki? Aside from what happened on the mountain hike, they get other nice scenes later on.
>>1792921
Share doesn't work well with my network for mysterious reasons, so I had taken to getting raws from different sources, most of which don't last long if at all. Glad to know that it isn't completely impossible to find raws, though.
I like Nancy/Maki, but I prefer them in their own pairings more. Sid doesn't have as good chemistry with any other character, and the Yukari/Maki game is too strong for me too waver much.
>>1775832
I feel this ship happening...
>>1775907
>>1793106
I think this ship already happened by reading into the last chapters. I only doubt they will show anything lewd like hand holding or kissing in the manga.
>>1792936
Yeah, their respective pairings are great too. I'm sad Maki/Yukari doesn't get much fanart despite being so strong in the last few volumes. Well, there's a few smutty pixiv fanfics, at least.
It's too bad Sid/Nancy haven't gotten any flashbacks, I want to know why they partnered up (other than Sid needing money).
I can't read a word of moon, but looking at the raws I seriously wondered if Ayana and Yukari where going to kiss during their fight. They really seem to have the dynamic of ex-lovers who got separated by circumstances not entirely in their own control, moved on and are happy now, but still have feelings and unanswered questions.
>>1793269
There's a lot of unresolvedsexualtension between Ayana and Yukari.
>>1793269
>>1793295
After they're done fighting Yukari comes off more like, well, Ayana's angry bossy mom frustrated that she still doesn't have it together. Hayate and Jun call her "the ex-wife" to her face on separate occasions and she doesn't even react to it.
Sometimes it seems as though people who still want Ayana and Yukari to get back together fail to recognize how awful that would turn out, when plot developments show on the other hand how being with Hayate and Maki respectively actually helped all four of them become better. And I find that a real shame.
Pic related: probably the closest thing to a dramatic realization of love we got during the first series.
>>1793311
>Sometimes it seems as though people who still want Ayana and Yukari to get back together fail to recognize how awful that would turn out, when plot developments show on the other hand how being with Hayate and Maki respectively actually helped all four of them become better. And I find that a real shame.
I think everyone can tell that. Doesn't change the fact there is a great deal of tension lingering. And I think it will never go away.
>>1793320
You're not done reading the chapters in the late 50s and on, are you?
(Warning: very spoilery pic)
>>1793295
Who knew Ayana was so good at giving orgasms? Surely she must have picked up a few tricks from those dating games she plays.
>>1793311
It's a thing of preference, I just happen to prefer Ayana x Yukari and see AyaHayate as best friends who manage to bring the best out of each other, no need to shame everyone who see it in a different way.
>>1793384
> AyaHayate as best friends
Stop that, Junjun's gonna cry.
>>1793976
They used to be lenses too strong for her eyes, which messed up her vision. Later on though Ayana does need prescription glasses because she's played video games in bad lighting too much for too long.
>>1793976
They're real, but Ayane doesn't have bad eyesight. She uses the glasses so she won't see the enemy in front of her, since her grandfather died fighting her once, so now she's afraid to look people on eyes, since she blames herself.
That's why she never recognizes anyone's face.
>>1792881
>Jun seems to enjoy flirting with Sae partly out of genuine attraction but also because it gets Akira mad.
Now I'm conflicted. Sae/Jun or Sae/Akira?
Finally caught up with the latest chapter. So I'm just guessing that Sae ends up getting disowned? I'd literally pay to see an ending were Akira and Sae start living together with Saki as their daughter.
Not that I want HxB to end anytime soon.
>>1796516
>So I'm just guessing that Sae ends up getting disowned?
I'm not so sure from the look of it. The way she talked about taking responsability made me think she's planning to throw to her parents something like "You expected me to solve your problems and I will, but I'll do it on my own terms whether you like it or not."
>>1797147
Looks about right to me.
After the Sae/Akira arc is over, there isn't much pagetime going into that whole nonsense with her family situation, because even more drama comes to the fore (namely, the battles between Hayate/Ayana and Ensuu/Meiko and later Maki/Yukari, and the new antagonists led by Hajime). It might be touched on again at a later point, but for the time being they're doing all right.
>>1796496
Sae/Jun is a whole lot of flirtatious interaction that probably won't come to anything. Jun may hit on other girls, but she's too hopelessly devoted to Yuuho, and when Yuuho is back it becomes all the more blatant.
Watching Akira get riled up when Jun pushes her buttons is hilarious, though.
>>1797677
She has to protect the bae (who doesn't actually need protection, but don't tell Akira that)
>>1797677
So does Akira go back to being Hayate's coach now that she's realized Her father is just an asshole? Because she wasn't prepared for Ensuu, if such a thing was possible.
Also, what was the point of that whole Arizona subplot? Is Kiji's friend going to show up as an exchange student or was that all a throwaway sidestory?
>>1797772
I think she just wasn't prepared for Ensuu and all the A-rank and Special A-ranks on the mountain. I don't remember how long she was into her fight when Ensuu showed up, but didn't Sai end up facing everyone while Akira fought Ensuu?
But then again, Ensuu and her partner were potential white shirts. They just turned it down.
>>1797782
Ensuu and Meiko were white shirts before the start of the story, but lost to Hitsugi at one point.
This means that the two of them actually earned the right to become white shirts twice.
>>1797772
You have to remember Akira never actually trained Hayate outside those few occasions and pointers at the beginning, even if she does give some more advice on and off. In this regard, Maki was the one who helped Hayate train by mimicking Ensuu's style.
There will be more references to the Arizona subplot, but they can't be summed up quickly or conveniently. Just keep it at the back of your mind and you'll recognize the references when they appear.
>>1797799
Yeah, don't really remember that much of the story before Seven Seas bailed on it.
Still kind of hesitant to buy any translated manga in print anymore (i.e. Citrus from Seven Seas). Everything I get into ends up dropped or the publisher goes under.
>>1797819
Just buy the tanks and learn Japanese, anon.It's the only way ;_;
>>1797819
If you like it and can afford it, buy it. Even if it gets dropped you can still enjoy what you have, and you've given support to the mangaka and the publisher, and upped their odds of production. And there's always a chance scanlations continue online, as with this series.
For anyone interested in buying the whole first series, if you buy it from this Amazon page (http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00ESBJP6M) it will only count as one item to ship. That's around 1200 yen, way cheaper than shipping 18 volumes by weight. It worked for me several months ago so I definitely recommend snatching it up if you can.

This is probably one of the ongoing series that's /u/-like that I'm most hyped for.
It was pretty obvious that they would make Ayana Heaven in that matchup, but what are the roles going to be in the twins matchup?Yuuhoand Hayate were both Heavens, if I recall correctly.
>>1834016
Yeah, consistent, well-drawn art style, girls galore w/no guys in sight, jam packed with humor yet quite a lot of depth to the characters...totally my fav ongoing series. Hayashiya just ticks the boxes for me.
Hayate will probably be the Heaven Sword, if only because being Earth doesn't suit her. (Although really, there's not much difference?) Plus as the main protag it makes more sense for her to fight that chick with the bad attitude.Even though it'd be hilarious to see her grind her teeth all "stress!" and then be unceremoniously tossed by Yuuho.
>>1834225

I must admit that they're maybe the only shinyuu pair I don't really ship. Shizuku would work fine as the mistress, but I feel she lacks something to be the wife. Hitsugi needs a queen at her side, someone able and willing to stand up to her. Not a devoted servant.
As it stands, I ship Hitsugi with her Native American look-alike, because they're only thousands of kilometers apart and have never met each other. Though apparently they've won a poll and are going to feature in the next tank extra.

From what I gather through a google translate of the tweet, it seems to be Hitsugi saying that the ring tied to the hilt of her sword (pic related) is a wedding ring from Shizuku.
>>1860025
A few months ago Hayashiya let readers tweet questions to HxB/Strawberry Shake characters and she would illustrate the characters answering it. Someone asked if the ring on Hitsugi's sword was a wedding ring, and Hitsugi replies that it's a ring meant to be thrown into the volcano in Mordor. The answers weren't meant to confirm or deconfirm anything in canon, they were just for fun. For example, we learned that Sid's favorite ZLAY song is "Mad Sex: Lesbian Fury Road": https://twitter.com/8848426/status/620600014503448577

There was a very brief voiced CM that keeps making people think there already is/was an animated adaptation.
If they retain the voice cast from the drama CDs, though, it would be a complete disaster to coordinate them all in terms of scheduling. Many are either occupied with other major/upcoming shows or have projects going on to supplement their voice acting jobs.

just read on Hayashiya's tweeter that HxB2 volume 6 will be the last. ( https://twitter.com/8848426/status/689821091817127937 )
aw man, I'll be so sad to see this series end, for how long have I been reading this ?... at least I can take solace in the fact that the translation will still be ongoing for the next 5 years, ha ha ha...
>>1959282
from what I understand, the person who edits the translation also scans her own tankoubons, no wonder it takes a long time
>>1966836
Wow, you'd think as a second series it would have been much longer than 6 volumes considering the length of the first series, but I guess she wants to move on or something, which is understandable
>>1966891
Maybe she could do something gayer this time
>>1966836
So I guess that means no real ending. I think there's still a volume to wrap things up, but it's really not much. Disappointing news to say the least.
>>1967174
There are currently 3 volumes of HxB2 out, it'll be at least another year before volume 6 is reached.
>>1967261
Raws are at chapter 25 right now and it's 6 chapters per volumes in HxB, right? So we're talking about an ending around chapter 35-40.
I can't read moon, but for those who can is the story building up to something as climatic as the Hitsugi/Shizuku - Akira/Sae orHayate/Ayana - Maki/Yukarifights, both of which lasted for nearly a volume (though there were stuffs happening in parallel in the latter's case)? Are Hayate and Ayana already strong enough to challenge the student council or the leaders of the new faction? I guess ending the series with a fight against Nagi could make sense.
>>1967174
in her twwet she says (I think) that she stops be cause she thinks she has more or less said everything she wanted, even if the end comes "a bit earlier than she thought". SO maybe we can hope for a satisfyi... ha ha no I can't even say it.
>>1967295
I read only the very beginning of HxB2, but I think they could... since they've won against two pairs that have been in the student council at some point. Beating Amagi still seems way out of their leagues, though.
I really hope there are cool Nagi scenes, though, there has been much hype built on her, and way too little payoff
>>1967295
>>1967613
Having read a large part of HCB2, the big thing of plot relevance is the clash between the Sky and Earth dormitories, with the usual shenanigans implemented by Hitsugi. And since Hitsugi isn't on either side, chances are that the major battle that eventually happens will be Amachi/Miyamoto versus Fubuki/Udou if/when the Kurogumi wins, or if/when they challenge the student council in a concentrated effort like they had before.
For Hayate, battling Nagi might also take place down the road. She has taken on Nagi solo already, but got thoroughly defeated every time. It would mark a point of development for them both.
>>1967613
>they've won against two pairs that have been in the student council at some point
Out of curiosity, who's the second pair? They've won againt Meiko and Ensuu already, butthey're going to lose against Yukari and Maki, correct? Or at leastHayate will lose and since she's the Heaven star that's a loss for the team.
>>1967945woah you're right I completely misremembered how that fight ends (even though that last spar is so freaking cool, I'm ashamed).
