Whats really interesting, as King as mentioned, is that people are ok with graphic mutilation and murder of children, but draw a line when kids decide to explore each others bodies. While by all means that part of the book is completely fucking ridiculous, I actually really like this part:

"and now she realises that for many of them sex must be some unrealized undefined monster; they refer to the act as It. Would you do It, do your sister and her boyfriend do It, do your mom and dad still do It, and how they never intend to do It."

This conceit represents the entire meaning of "coming of age", regardless of how silly the scene is. "It" represents everything a child doesn't understand and is therefore afraid of. "It" is more than just a monster that wants to scare the kids, it is part of them. As long as they are kids, they are afraid. So while children are meant to gradually progress into teenagers and then slowly become adults, in this scene the kids make themselves into adults both physically and mentally. It's silly to think about even in context, but it's actually a necessary part of character development that all the kids required in order to defeat their fear.
