Rico spends minutes creating a short animation on his tablet, but when she sends it over to Carmen she makes a much better looking and more animated version in a matter of seconds to send back to him. He represented the willpower of the human race and what they'd do and sacrifice to survive. He was willing to let Rico and his team die to test if there was a brain bug on the planet because it would serve the greater good to know it was there and to capture it, the losses were justified because of the information they needed.

He then was willing to let Rico risk his life to save Carmen because he knew that every human life on that planet was worth saving now that capture of the brain bug was all but assured given the firepower they'd dedicated to the mission.

If I remember from the book it had something to do with women understanding three dimensional spatial movement and relative motion better than men(everything in space is moving independently of each other so to dock a ship you need to match speed, direction etc).

I'm not sure how accurate it actually is but I'd assume that when the book was written it was considered factual(kind of like how Ringworld mentions getting White Line Fever/Highway Hypnosis but the way it is presented is mostly considered junk science now).
