Besides history is a very clear indicator that the only people good at colonization are religious whack jobs and private corporations.

This film is so badly misunderstood, feelsbadman.jpg.

Its a satire the portrayal of militarism in films, not fascism.

You'll notice it has blatant propaganda films cut into it which the audience knowingly laughs at, within what is actually another propaganda film they are watching and getting invested in (right at the end the barriers between the two fall).

Paul Verhoeven is really attacking the audience. Its why he casts pretty boys and pretty girls from teen dramas, those aren't really 'good' casting choices, they are funny casting choices you'd put in a propaganda film. Having Doogie Howser's Nazis from "Games and Theory" turn up at the end, is just him making it blatant what you've been watching and cheering on. Just like you have been doing in all those other films.

He did the same thing in Showgirls which nobody understands either. Lots of voyeurs went to watch a film about the evils of voyeurism and found it insulting. Worst film ever? Actually one of the best. Glassy-eyed flat performances? Yes, you're watching porn idiot.

Verhoeven is a hugely unappreciated IMHO. It boils down to cinema audiences like to see anyone satirised except themselves.

They aren't "genuine moments", its a fake film about things that didn't happen (if you get what I mean). They are cliches. Three overly-photogenic friends don't sign up together and then reunite at the point of a historical victory, there is only one sort of film where that happens... You are meant to understand that there is probably another very grim film that could be made about what 'really happened', and this isn't it. Probably one where the earth is brutally wiping up defenceless bugs that didn't do anything other than sit around composing poetry or something. Its been a while since I saw it but I seem to remember there is actually a fairly heavy plot incongruity that points at the story of the conflict being presented is an obvious lie.
