What's so great about "morally grey" stories? Why? Because he was a philologist who loved language and mythology and wanted to create his own, using his own experiences in the First World War to do so as well as his immense knowledge of classic literature.

The fact that Jackson included as much as he did in the film because of all the extra notes about his artificial languages speaks volumes about the quality of the films.

They're decent films, but after reading the novels you can't enjoy them the way you did before.
I recommend everyone to read it, it might be old but Tolkien was such a perfectionist in his writing - combine that with how old fashioned many modern fantasy novels are written and the age of the book isn't a deal at all.
