This actually makes sense though because all of the other celestial bodies have Latin names. As it stands at the moment it's our system that is out of sync. Also presumably under One World Government some of the nations might object to the use of English as a standard language - so the most elegant solution would to be to go back to a neutral, dead but also common ancestor language like Latin or Greek, at least for naming conventions.

I like it as a solution for the fermi paradox. All the alien civilisations out there are just scared shitless about letting people know they're there, because all it takes is one cunt who thinks he's getting seven virgins hijacking any form of propulsion system that lets you achieve like 99% of light-speed and your planet would be fucked. And you don't dare wipe out any budding civilisations like ours either, because then you might just tip someone else off that you're there. So you all just hide and hope you aren't discovered by some mad cunt who'll send you an FTL care package.

BRAVO MONDAY
Hey, I write for a living and one of my hobbies is trying to write a sci-fi novel and fuck you guys. Do you know how many nights of thinking, planning, writing, drawing and headaches it takes to turn out with a realistic, not-too-strange and passable currency, name, concept?
First time I ever started writing it took me a month to come up with a naming system for characters and another one for planets. I mean, names are clearly going to evolve along the way they currently have - we name planets and star systems on discoverers, gods, mythology. What's going to happen to mythology? Are we going to keep using the same one? What if the current order of civilization disappears, won't other folklore prevail and we will start considering that? Will people ten thousand years from now call planets "Trump 1" and Sadam Hussein 2"? "Geralt of Rivia"?

keep it up man, I'm writing a sci fi novel too
>>87648040
Alright, so it usually wouldn't be a historical name. Most currencies are not recycled in terms of name, because they exist one way or another and that causes severe issues - if you re-issue dollars, will previous variations of the currency exist?
Making up a cryptocurrency is simple - I have milk on my desk, so my cryptocurrency will be called Lattus Notes. Lattucoins? Fuck, who gives a shit. I'm making stuff up. When I'm writing a sci-fi novel if I want to make it good, it has to be realistic and believable. If the future I present you isn't believable, the whole thing is worthless. Therefore I am not making stuff up, I'm making an educated, good guess about what a currency would be like in my universe. I might be writing about a space pirate fighting space cowboys on spaceships, but I have to dig deep, figure out what society led to our exodus to different planets, creation of ships, how piracy survived and then try to realize where the currency came from, what it is. How it is backed up. Who backs it up. What its value is.
As this is fairly impossible in sci-fi, you have to do writing tricks and workarounds to avoid figuring everything out - credits is one such elegant workaround, where you avoid dealing with currency and just say "credits". I.e. just a galactic general currency, undefined, something you don't look into too much. It's also why the way of interstellar travel is rarely explored beyond "faster than light" or "hyperspace". Ships fly with "engines" and are called "ships" and look like jet fighters or space shutles. Or, well, have a general look that supports engines or something.
For the record my universe has a lot of currencies and I'm actually trying to make trade and economics an interesting part of it without letting it butt into the adventure and fun part. There's also a mined metal that is almost 100% unbreakable, non-corrosive and has almost no way of changing that has a constant, albeit not so high value.
Just call your currency BROUZOUF
>>87650254
Neat, what's yours about? Are you also sick of coming up with new, exciting names? Took me two days to come up with my first few characters, wanted them to be perfect, now I just look at the closest names/labels near me and take the last three letters of two to form a name. Alternating with taking the last four, or just the middle three for a short name.
>>87650521
I find planning really hard and frustrating but the best way is to just focus on the current scene and character motivations and let them lead the story. Otherwise I never get anything written and the plans start to box me in and make things feel inorganic.
I found it hard to decide on main character names but I just come up with minor character names on the spot. Some of it's set in the future where I just call the currency dollars and don't state exactly where it is so I can kind of do what I want. I actually find that easier than writing the present day stuff where I have to look shit up to make it accurate.
