It's hard to not compare it to the original series, which I kept doing whilst watching it, but by the end I just imagined it as its own thing, and it wasn't so bad. The acting is not bad, and the cinematography is good but nothing special, and the story was okay. Light himself was okay but I really didn't believe he was smart, or smart enough to pull of the events in the ending. L was pretty disappointing, I honestly didn't care that he was black, but it bugged me how emotional and frantic he was by the end. He wasn't the character from the anime, which isn't the worst thing, but it's a far less interesting character. I'd give it a 6/10 or 6.5, but compared to the anime and manga, it's a lot weaker. And I haven't seen the other Death note films, but I have seen episodes from the live action Tv show, and that was very cringey.

Separating the anime and movie completely, it still falls flat. Consider Constantine (movie) and Hellblazer (comic), for example. There are very stark differences between the two universes, one has black haired a good guy Constantine in objective evil and good struggle, and the other had blond John who's a dick in a world where everyone's dick. They're separate franchises, but good pieces of media. If you'd judge Hellblazer by Constantine and vice versa, you'd shit on either.

In this movie, Light's character is divided in movie Light and Mia. All the good characteristics (desire for justice) are in mLight, while all bad characteristics (sociopathy and megalomania) are in Mia. Light is also much more impulse and penis driven, which fits a kid of 16 years old. L is kinda like how a real version of autistic, narrow minded child would work - he's good at what he does, but is prone to autistic outbursts. Characters are okay, scenography is okay, but the problem is stupid script and major plot holes. For example.

>if you're not going to kill any police officer, why order Watari to find L's name, if you're not going to kill him
>why say "give me my notebook or I wont burn the page" when you can literally write "Light gives me notebook then dies two days after" and burn the page before he dies
>why not write "Mia burns my page then dies" instead of having a convoluted scheme

>the clipping of a guy who killed your wife in a room of your son does not necessarily mean that he killed him

There are inklings of smart writing, but it's overwhelmingly bullshit. Rewatching the original you can see how clever the writing was and how quick thinking Light was. You may not need a smart Light, but you do need smart writing.

Adding to this, here's how to make a good Death Note movie. Not tv show. A movie.

For two reasons. One, if set in modern times it would be far too hard to write around modern technology like smartphones and the like. Two, it enables it a sense of continuity with anime Death Note.

When adapting, change everything, especially if it's from foreign media. How awkward would it look if Seven Samurai were depicted as samurai, instead of cowbody? Plus, making L/ight black or white just draws in unneccesary shit. Instead of Ryuk, write in a new Shinigami. Instead of Light and L, write in different characters.

Make the new L (maybe K?) related to the Wammy's house to throw a bone to weebshits, but keep it tangential enough for it not to swallow the plot to accomodate normies.
