Sinister scared me when I saw it.

Thanks I didn't need to sleep tonight

This, I'm still scared of Sinister purely because of the "family home movies". When it gets into >le ancient demon stuff it just becomes goofy.

Living like this forever, miserable and alone, with not a single person on earth caring about me, and alcohol only providing a temporary escape while ironically making me uglier/less functional, worsening my situation

>>87631416
Really? I thought it was more of a thriller than horror. What parts stuck out to you as really scary?

which one should I watch tonight /tv/?
>>
>>87631900
Baskin is scarier, a dark song doesn't go batshit insane as much as baskin. Both are probably like a 3.5/5, ie as good or better than It (2017)
>>

I unironically agree. Except for the motivation/ logic of the aliens, and some human actions, where it's kinda retarded. Otherwise great film.

Good choices

Also The Fly and The Thing, which aren't really scary but made me mentally recoil in disgust at times, and Session 9
>>
>>87633182
i also recommend Noroi: The Curse if you're sick of jump scares
>>
>>87635210
The Thing is very scary when you put a lot of thought into what went on but The Fly (assuming you're referring to Cronenberg's version and not the slightly superior Vincent Price version) isn't that scary. It's more of a drama with some gross out effects.
>>
>>87634858
this was pretty spooky, rainy kino too
>>
>>87635033
We're not going to have a entire thread talking about zombie films or vampire films. It's best to just lump them all together for the sake of variety

It's not like /mu/ where you need specific genres for each thread. /tv/ is a board for all things related to film and television which could mean adventure, action, drama, comedy ect.. The only thing the person needs to say to start a thread is "horror" and then let it go from there. You're not going to start a thread specifically asking for psychological horror, or body horror. That would be retarded.

"It"s problem is being based on a book there's so much that's impossible to translate onto film. King's ending didn't have a spider, it had an eldritch horror that human minds struggled to comprehend and gave it a shape their mind would accept, and THAT was the spider.

Also the CGI was fine, stop being contrarian. Even if saying that on 4chan is like pissing in the wind.

No the problem is they didn't have the girl fuck all the boys after destroying Pennywise. It's bullshit.

>>87638107
>Also the CGI was fine, stop being contrarian
Not liking the incredibly noticeable CGI does not make someone a contrarian. It's laziness and pathetic. The whole point of a horror film is to scare the audience yet how do you expect them to be frightened by a fucking cartoon? It's not even like most of the things they were doing even needed CGI. They could of easily have used makeup, molds, and animatronics which not only would have looked much better, but it also would have been 5x less expensive. It's not even like anyone is saying all CGI is bad but it should only be used when necessary, and not cover up the entire fucking movie.

It's people who defend this shit that are to blame for the lack of quality of horror films for the past 20 years.

The older you get the slimmer the chance of being legitimately scared by a movie. Watch as much as you can when you're young because the effect wears off. Only speaking for men, can't speak for women.

>tfw was fucked up by IT, Candyman and Fire in the Sky as a kid
>rewatch them all while older and they're all such turbo trash

>>
>>87638715
I don't think it has anything to do with age rather than how much horror you do watch. I rarely watched horror films up until I was about 21. By the time I was an adult, they still effected me. It wasn't until I grew a love for them and began watching them on a daily basis is when it completely wore off and now I watch them as if they're just regular movies. Every now and then I'll find a really good horror film that makes me tense or jumpy for a scene or two but it won't carry throughout the entire film anymore.

Are you kidding? That film is legit tough to watch knowing the horrors that the main character goes through. Everything from the acting. music, and setting are superb. It's a high tier horror film and shouldn't be lumped in with a TV miniseries and a shitty movie.

For my entire life I've been seeking out the most unsettling movies I can find in any language and these are the best ones I've found. I invite anyone to offer movies they think are scarier!

Asian:
Audition (genuinely creepy moments)
Kairo (incredible depiction of suicidal depression)
Cure (just watch it. eerie as fuck)
Gozu (watching this movie is like living a dream while being awake)
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

Spanish:
Sequestrados (brutal film. I like to think of it as a metaphor for rich powerful elite 1% individuals tearing into your nation, stealing your cash, and raping and murdering everyone you care about).
REC 1 & 2

German:

The Seventh Continent (existential dread of calculating that it is better to die than to continue living as one's culture demands one to live).
Funny Games

French:

Them (very realistic)
High Tension
Inside (very gross)
Martyrs

These films aren't really worth watching. If you're a teenage edgelord, you might find them to be enjoyable. I'd rather watch horror film that is legit great and not very scary than a film that may be scary or unsettling but is also terrible. Even the ones that are considered "artsy" like Martyrs are really not much better than the Saw sequels or the Hostel films. Granted not all of the films you mentioned are that, but i'm only referring to the ones that are.

You the kind of person who would go out with someone to get ice cream and when the person asks what flavor y'all should get, you respond with "vanilla".

All you're missing is Nightmare on Elm Street and Annabelle and then you'd win the game.

Which of the mentioned films do you consider terrible? I'm ready and willing to understand your perspective. Most of the movies that unsettled me in the list I provided, don't have much gore in them. To be honest, I enjoy distant, static takes of characters more than chaotic, close-up shots of gore. Audition, Kairo, Gozu, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, The Seventh Continent, and Funny Games all focus on lengthy distant static shots of eerie situations, rather than close up gore.

Oldfag here. Why are you mostly naming newer films? You're missing out on some of the best films ever created. Yeah you have Sleepaway Camp which is a decent movie but it's not actually scary until you see that last scene. In fact most of the film is kind of silly. It just seems weird joining a thread that's about horror movies yet I'm seeing mostly common shit that aren't even that old. Not saying people should spam the common as hell slashers like F13 and NoES but there are plenty of great horror films that have not been mentioned. It would be nice to see some quality stuff pre-2005 or even pre-2000. For a site that's su[pose to be 18+, i'm seeing a lot of movies people who are 17- talk about. Hell my teenage sister has watched a bunch of these recently.

The Thing is not a scary movie per se, what makes it so creepy is the concept behind the alien. All it wants is to survive and reproduce, instincts that all life has. Man is trying to suppress these instincts with technology, which has lead to nihilism. Carpenter specifically made the movie to reflect that nihilism, hence the nihilistic ending, the lack of any female characters and the general feeling of hopelessness throughout the whole movie. Even the soundtrack has a "it's all fucked, what's the point" feeling to it.

Plenty on that list is great. Just because it doesnt have every single movie it needs to doesnt mean its a bad list. And honestly at this point suggesting the trilogy has to be a meme. No one is going to make a spook thread and not have seen night dawn and day. Also OG nos is overrated.

I was legitimately scared by Sinister up until the monster actually showed up. Hawke wandering around the house and the home movies got to me.

I was also scared by The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity.

Fuck knows why, they really shouldn't scare me.

There was another found footage movie about the Jersey Devil - can't remember the name right now. Came out before Blair Witch.

It really freaked me out too - terrible ending, but the rest of it got to me.

There was also this really, really old French series of found footage movies I saw on TV as a kid. They're on YouTube now. Scared the shit out of me as a kid. Really spoopy /x/ stuff.

The scariest film experienced I ever had was "The Killing Of America" or "Executions" as a kid. This was pre-internet. Seeing real murders was a big deal. Seeing how fucking ugly and violent real murders are was REALLY off putting.

The Killing Of America was more a context thing - I was a little kid, 11. I was at an older kids house smoking weed and watching porn and then he put on The Killing Of America. His older brother came in to watch it with us. It's a documentary about serial killers. I had no idea about serial killers really. They were all Freddy Krueger or Jason to me, and they killed hot naked chicks.

In this documentary they covered real life murders.

So I'm sitting there, stoned, at an older kids house (whose mother/older brother were drug dealers) and this documentary is teaching me about Dean Corll and John Wayne Gacy. I just found out that old men like to fuck young boys. I just found out that young men like to VIOLENTLY RAPE AND TORTURE TO DEATH young boys.

I just found out they lured young boys to their deaths with the promise of weed and porno and a cool place to hang out with your friends, run by a cooler older guy.

I just found out this shit happens in boring as hell lower working class suburbia.

The walk home that night was fucking terrifying.
>>
>>87633182

Kill List has some really scary parts.

Mothman Prophecies scared me (the phone call scene) when I saw it at the movies, but not when I rewatched it.

Candyman terrifid me as a child, and I still find it frightening. Cliver Barkers fucking degenerate homosexual sadism streak comes through, and the music and locations...

Jacobs Ladder...

Well...It's sort of scary.

But it used to be my go to fap movie as a kid, so it's hard for me to judge in correctly.

It's been said a few times in this thread, but the Shining is fucking great and legitimately unsettling.

Some other films I found pretty disturbing:

Videodrome
Lake Mungo
Maniac
Martyrs
The Skin I Live In
The Bay

Although admittedly, The Skin I Live in is more of a thriller and the Bay is straight up schlock. Something about it really hit me hard though.

Exorcist 3 always shows up on Scariest Movies lists, but never Good Movie lists.

It's a shame, because the stuff that works in it works better than the original film in terms of scares, but it's such a fucking mess.
>>

It's pretty bleak. I could see how it would affect someone used to movies ending positively for the characters, even when it is a downer-ending.
>>
>>87638648

American Werewolf is so, so fucking good.

There's dream sequences that veer from hilarious to genuinely disturbing and frightening in a single shot.

It's a rare film that can juggle two tones at the same time. Usually we get funny or scary. The Evil Dead sometime manages to get both going at the same time, but part 2 just went all in on the comedy with an occassionally scary scene. American Werewolf had scenes that were simultaneously frightening and funny at once. I love when a film can manage that.

The Thing is just a great film with one of the all time great Jump Scares.

I've only ever had one bad trip. I had another two trips when INSANELY violent imagery/thoughts, but they weren't bad. One was very enjoyable and fascinating, one gave me some deep insights about myself and others.

The one bad trip, which was really bad, came as a result of mixing LSD with an experimental drug (basically a synthesis of ketamine and PCP) and it was a complete psychological fuck up followed by being generally miserable and depressed for about 12 hours.

>No, it's violence porn.
No it isn't. Porn implies it's masturbatory. But the entire point of the violence in Martyrs is that it becomes numbing and desensitizing. Stupid shit like Eli Roth movies are violence porn. They essentially exist as a celebration of movie violence. They happen to be nihilistic and depressing. Martyrs is a movie explicitly about nihilism and depression.
>The director could've gotten the point across without using that kind of imagery and atmosphere.
A: That's irrelevent. It was the creator's aesthetic intent to use "that kind of imagery and atmosphere" to tell the story.
B: That's bullshit. The story is the violence. You can watch the retarded English language remake and see how fucking wrong you are you stupid idiot dummy.
>At least be honest about it, like Gaspar Noé, and make shocking movies for their own sake.
Shit like Martyrs and Salo absolutely set out to be shocking "for their own sake." But you're kind of just full of shit. Noe's films use shock in service of a message just like like Martyrs.

Stop arguing semantics, my point is that Martyr's violence was so over-the-top and explicit that it makes the film vulgar.
Maybe you're right and I just don't get it, to be frank I was really shocked and disgusted by that movie, so perhaps it simply had its intended effect. Whereas shit like Nekromantik or CH are just gross, Martyrs was profoundly morbid.
>Noe's films use shock in service of a message
Love is just porn, Carne is dirty and dark just for its own sake, the only movie Noé did which was interesting beyond simple shock value was Enter the Void.
Irréversible was interesting in terms of storytelling but not much more. Ten minutes for a rape scene was just stupid, Noé himself jacking off in a scene just for the sake of not being called homophobic is retarded. The theme itself, time destroys all things, is good, but the execution was mediocre.
About Salo, it was literally and figuratively shit because it just poorly adapted what it was based on.

The Thing gets more and more terrifying the more times I've seen it. It will likely peak at some point, but the most recent time I watched it I was scared in the first 5 minutes.
There's an intense desperation in that opening scene, knowing what that dog is and knowing its movements are a total act. You hope to god that the guys in the helicopter are going to get it, but the tragedy is knowing that they won't, and the Thing has another chance at survival

It was about 10 years ago when I was in highschool, but I remember it was fucking awesome. It's a pretty scary thing to do for the uninitiated though because certain movies you watch will definitely influence the types of hallucinations you see. As for Mothman Prophecies, I was watching it in the dark (by myself) and I kept feeling like something was watching me from all directions, in my peripherals were weird Mothman hallucinations. I found much more profundity and believability in the movie than usual, & noticed tons of other little subtle tricks they used in the cinematography (the red eyes, symbolism). It helped me to imagine on a universal/cosmic level all the other kind of weird paranormal/cryptozoology stuff out there. but mostly it was just an intense, cool, scary experience. I've done it with a lot of other movies too with mixed results. Watched Big Fish on shrooms and nearly cried because of how beautiful it was. Watched Dawn of the Dead 1978, my favorite movie ever, was fucking awesome. Watched Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas on Acid, followed closely by Apocalypto. Apocalypto was intennnnse, but again.. fucking awesome.

>How is the American remake of Ringu?
It's actually really decent. I'd argue they had a slightly-less-creepy Samara, but they innovated the script in a couple cool ways that fit perfectly with the established background. There's this bit with some horses... damn, just have to see it.

No slag on the original, it's a great little piece of j-horror. But in this case, the verbinski version is a rare example of a remake that actually justifies its existence.

The 80's one? That's some good stuff.

not trying to sound contrarian, but honestly true crime shit is honestly more unsettling than most horror and infinitely more depressing too.

The thing that The Thing and Aliens both do so fucking well, and what makes them horror movies isn't the spooky scary monsters, its the fact that the entire movie is nothing but a slow build of tension.
Both movies are so good that I recommend and optional viewing environment. For the thing it works best if you live someplace where it snows a lot. Wait for the coldest snowiest windiest day, late at night, light out, turn off your cell phone, and just watch it in the dark with the sound up.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) freaked me out, and I also like the 50s original. The Thing is also great for similar reasons.

The 80s remake of The Blob gave me nightmares as a kid because it didn't make any noise and getting smothered and consumed is a horrible way to die.

Talking about horror movies i need help remembering one, it was a movie about a blonde girl being chased by a green/cyan monster man in a subway, it had a spooky ass screamer with the face of the monster dude instantly flashing in the screen it was pretty scary desu.

Anyone knows what movie it is? I remember it was maybe 2000-2005.

Martyrs is absolutely violence porn. Its shallow message doesn't absolve the way it gets it across.
