What are your thoughts?
>>
>>87625122
I don't think about it. When I first saw the commericial for it, my only thought was "It looks awful".

I don't get how it even got greenlit
>>
Was not what i thought it would be.

First episode is slow, be i can see thibgs I like, and I am hopeful that it may be a good show, but knowing fox it will be canceled after 1 season.
>>
>>87625165
Star trek.... with Seth McFarland.

Its nerd and fart jokes, we will make millions boss!
>>
>>87625122
Pretty damn good. Discovery shills are paid to bash it, but I liked it.
>>
>>87625288
Discovery doesn't have me intrigued. But Orville, i liked it. And i hope it does well.
>>
Every single joke fell flat. The banter was tiresome. The captain/first officer relationship is trash.

Other than that, it's fine.
>>
>>87625122
Dog shit
>>
8 is too many
they should kick out 2.
>>
>>87625122
I really enjoyed it.
>>
>>87625165
SO you pre-judge shit about even watching it? Kill yourself, nigger.
>>
>>87625213
I don't think there was a single fart joke. There was a banana joke.
>>
>>87625454
The jokes fell flat? Were you under the impression that there was a studio audience and no one laughed?
>>
Not a good Star Trek parody. Not a good Star Trek rip off. Not funny. Not dramatic. Not sure who the audience is for this piece of crap.
>>
It's a more faithful Star trek series than Discovery. Which is sad.

And the character traits are really neat.

You have the helmsman who is legendarily brilliant, but can't get any posts because he's reckless, the Captain who was considered a rising star with potential for grandeur, who sank to the bottom after a bad divorce

and the rest are sort of Star trek stereotypes with side quirks. And the other characters are enjoyable in their own right, with their own quirks.

and the idea of that captain, getting his ex wife as his first officer, is brilliant potential.

the plot was way more star trek than it had any right to be, but with some more levity.

It was like Star trek without the soapy melodrama, and with a more lighthearted edge.
>>
>>87625613
Did anybody laugh in real life? For the sake of humanity, I hope not.
>>
>>87625454
>Every single joke fell flat. The banter was tiresome. The captain/first officer relationship is trash.

>Other than that, it's fine.

what did he mean by this?
>>
>>87625677
Music, fine. Aesthetics, fine. Storytelling, fine. It's all fine when they aren't trying to be funny.
>>
>>87625665
You sound like an arrogant prick. Do you have any friends?
>>
>>87625665
i laughed in pretend life
>>
>>87625747
This and really it's just seth macfarlane's jokes personally that fell flat. The helmsman and navigator bantz were great. The big guy alien was also pretty good deadpan funny.
>>
>>87625122
Norm MacDonald?

Never once.
>>
>>87625665
Laughed at the holodeck ogre being a bro
Laughed when the black guy wanted to bring soda on deck
Laughed when the alien emitted fluid from its face
The robot was pretty amusing
Probably forgetting a few scenes, but this thing was full of honest laughs
>>
>>87625775
Are you implying that there's something wrong with having no friends? This is a bully-free zone, you bully.
>>
>>87625122
It was pretty comfy and I enjoyed it.
Certainly better than STD so far.
>>
The pilot was meh, but I'll watch a few more episodes and give this show a chance.
>>
>>87625985
How many episodes into STD are you?
>>
It's a mediocre comedy and a poor Star Trek knock-off. It's probably the best looking fan project I've ever seen, aside from Axanar though.

Compare it to other Star Trek pilots and it really gives us no reason to continue to tune in, other than to see if the captain and first officer reconcile. They don't set up any kind of grand adventure or mystery, or real premise outside of "it's just like Star Trek". There was no morality or deeper themes at play, just a run and gun adventure that younger audiences would probably enjoy. It didn't have the wonder of TNG's first episode, the world building of DS9 or the action and stakes of VOY.

Also, the black navigator is a horrible actor. You need someone much, much funnier in that role, who can emote more.

I think it's a good example if the bland crap people will digest just to avoid boredom.

And no, I don't think STD will be a good show either.

Star Trek needs to be laid to rest.

Well, the rotten tomatoes audience seems to love it despite idiot 'critics' so..

It's both. Where does the confusion come in?
>>
>>87626497
It's a stupid DS9 retard who legitimately can't understand anything that isn't a lowest common denominator soap opera
>>
>>87625122
was alright. Wasn't particularly funny or anything but it was engaging enough. Felt like a more lighthearted trek
>>
>>87626497
The commercials make it seem like a complete parody that you can't take seriously but /tv/ tells me otherwise.
>>
>>87625122

The comedy angle isn't working because the jokes are lousy, and as a 'space adventure' it's not faring much better.

Galaxy Quest showed how it should be done, comfy, loving, let's-poke-fun-at-Star-Trek with a bunch of likable characters.
>>

McFarlane should have swallowed his ego, accepted he'll never get to make a proper Trek show and gone full comedy.

A full comedy sci-fi show taking the piss out of chronically self-important Star Trek would have at least rocked the boat for a season. And it really wouldn't have alienated fans, most trek nerds have a really good sense of humor about it.

This is just going to get buried after the rest of the fall debuts.
>>
>>87626568
Your Galaxy Quest description also works perfectly if you replace "Galaxy Quest" with "The Orville."

>>87625122
It's a great show, nails the aesthetic and feel of classic Trek perfectly. The jokes are weak but also pretty light anyway, it's clearly more of a homage than a parody.

It's nice to see proper Star Trek back on TV, STD can go fuck itself.
>>
>>87626526
Why are you so rude?
>>
>>87626627
Nah, I don't want to waste my time watching a parody especially since Seth is in it.

>>
>>87626681
How is that not exactly what this show is?
And I don't want to hear about trekkies being good-natured about taking a ribbing. I saw a thread earlier full of assmad trek fans crying in their blue milk about how McFarlane was "mocking the fans and poking fun at the things we love about Star Trek."

>>
>>87626759
Because the jokes are weak and low hanging fruit McFarlane is pulling his punches and it shows because he still wants to make it a serious sci-fi show.

It's like they took the plot of a Star Trek fanfic and wrote some Dad jokes into it. He's riding the gas and the brakes at the same time. He just needs to put the hammer down on the comedy.

Also most trekkers do have a good sense of humor about it. 4chan, and especially /tv/, are not an accurate cross section of the rest of the world.

RT is wrong in general. You can't really trust the critic reviews because the broken ruberic and you can't really trust the viewer reviews because of fanboys, sock puppets and shills.

What I want to see is the actual ratings after a few episodes.
>>
>>87626694

>Your Galaxy Quest description also works perfectly if you replace "Galaxy Quest" with "The Orville."

Only if you remove 'comfy' and 'likable characters', and add really low brow humor.

The bitching between Seth and his ex-wife was tired after 20 seconds, yet I fear this shit will go on through the entire season, or how many episodes it gets before it's cancelled.
>>
>>87627019
I posted this already read the fucking thread faggot.
>>
>>87627095
The first 3 episodes were already released to the critics.
>>
I watched it, didn't like it.

There was a scene where the ship is pulling out from the docking station, and I was expecting something to happen, anything. Like in Galaxy quest they pull out and scrape the side of the ship, but nothing nada just one long wank scene of OH LOOK HOW COOL THE SHIP DESIGN IS. Mcfarlane always got to basically jerk himself off on tv but this time people actually have to look at his smug fuckface instead of animation.
>>
>>87627019

That looks worse than the Orville cast, looks like 'refugees in space'
>>
>>87627095
Who fucking cares about reviews or RT at all? Seriously I've lived my entire life not paying any attention to film or tv show reviews/critics and I have not missed a thing. If anything, I'm more open minded than most film "fans" because of this.
>>
>>87627154
Yeah, but I want to see ratings after they air. I don't think this show is going to do well, but I don't trust aggregator sites. I want to see the data.
>>
>>87627113
So don't watch it then. Why live in fear of a tv show doing something you don't like? Are you required to watch The Orville as a condition of your parole or something?
>>
Didn't like some of the jokes. Thought having the cheating ex-wife become 1st officer was stupid, but can let it pass since it's a comedy.

I liked that they don't use teleporter technology and thought it was cool that so many different aliens were shown.

Give it a 7/10 has potential but can see it going downhill hard like The Last Man on Earth did.

Dude ants are the fucking worst. I had ants in my kitchen not long ago, I have no idea how they even got in. You know what you do when you have ants? Don't spray down your counters and all your shit with pesticide, that's dumb. What you do is you get one of those lighters, like the long one you use to light a BBQ grill? And then whenever you see one of these little prick ants you torch him with the lighter and leave his crispy dead ass right where he is. Every time you see one of the ants, flame his faggot ass and leave him laying. The only ant you don't torch, is when you see one of the ants headed out carrying one of the dead ones. Why? He's carrying the dead ant back to the hive. After a few ants do this -- carry their dead back to the hive -- the ants will decide it isn't safe and will leave your home.

I liked the first episode well enough, I'd say 7 out of 10.

There wasn't anything really amazing about it but the special effects were neat and the setting was comfy and it delivered a decent if not particularly imaginative scifi story.

The only bit I really didn't like was the cuckoldry/ex wife plot line. It didn't deliver anything new or interesting and the jokes it generated were all things you've seen a million times in generic sitcoms. This is a scifi series that means you can go crazy places with the humor like Futurama did you don't need to show me a cliche' conflict between estranged exes unless they're like two heads on the same body or something.
>>
>>87629806

Only teenager would find Seth MacFarlane shows like Family Guy and American Dad funny.
I don't think a parody of Star Trek is meant for kids. If they gave it the same treatment that Galaxy Quest got then it could have worked.

shouldn't the seed just have shriveled up? I mean there was no water added. If the show starts off this weak I am not going to watch another episode.

I think it could turn into something good.. the comedy was okay, I did giggle a few times but other times it was a bit too tyhard quippy

My bigger concern is the cgi, it really really needs some serious improvement. Especially the end where they are just spinning around the big green ship lol

I think it could be good I'm gonna stick with it a bit.

I'm not complaining, i'm merely stating.
>>
>>87625122
The first episode isn't great but it has potential. Too many jokes fall flat and are dragged out for too long. For example, the dog licking its balls in the background was a slightly amusing joke. However, having two characters then talk about it afterwards was painfully unfunny.
>>
>>87634118
>Too many jokes fall flat
this specific sentence is used so often in these Orville topics. cant help but notice it.

stop copy pasting
>>
>>87634118
It was a 5 second exchange, thats exactly the sort of 'comedy' that worked, quickly mention it quickly move on, the lingering 'jokes' like the helmsman wanting to piss were the 'dragged out' ones
>>
>>87634151
That line, the 'cgi is bad' line and 'something something remember how bad wild west was guys?' have been repeated for days now, makes you believe in shills
>>
>>87634151
well macfarlane's really not funny. his self inserts have always been the worst part of every project and now he's the focus.
>>
>>87634203
But he's not even trying to be funny most of the time, its played very straight, thats why 'the jokes fell flat' line seems like blatant shilling.

>>
>>87634333
Yea as always Seths 'jokes' are lame, the 2nd in commands response was pretty funny though, and again the less humor the better, say a joke if it doesn't work fly on past it, the more serious the show gets the better it will be
>>
>>87634151
It's a paid talking point for Trek shills trying to shut down the competition in favor of the upcoming Gold Tone Star Trek asininity.

Being cucked by an alien in the first few minutes by an alien. Something many of us can relate to.
>>
>>87634533

>>
The only jokes I liked were natural-feeling ones like the friendly holodeck program, Norm MacDonald blob and the fish guy being NotStarfleet people, and the deadpan second officer.

The dog licking its balls, the divorce gag, and the snarky quips were cringe-inducing
>>
>>87629050

I actually thought he did okay. Like, he's not Patrick Steward or William Shatner, but he's good enough. He's at least Scott Bakula tier. Also considering the episode ends with him sort of making amends with his ex-wife it's entirely possible it might go a Riker and Troi way where they don't really touch on the relationship except in brief passing the rest of the series.

Overall I went in expecting a copy paste of the Simpsons/Family Guy/American Dad/Cleveland Show formula except in space and instead got "almost Trek" and I'm actually kind of excited for the series.
>>
>>87635003
Wtf are you talking about? the sets are pure star trek.

Weird how Seth had produced something that works better as straightforward adventure show.

They need to recast the Ex-Wife. Bad bad actress based on the pilot. I can't believe I'd say this but I'd rather have Mila Kunis is the role, she at least can emote some more expressions than mild annoyance.
>>
>>87637362
>if you ignore the core of the show, it's not entirely shit!

>>87625122
My thoughts are that it's a wonderful romp. The jokes are mostly funny and the adventure -- oh, that adventure! It's good to have a space adventure show again. Doesn't seem like any agendas are being pushed, either, which is great! Great show!

At least it something kinda new-ish being a sci-fi comedy, never liked seth so I just wish they could have cast someone else...ginger pilot guy is usually good in most things and seems like a bro.
Should have really told seth to stay off camera with this show,I just want to smash his face in and I am really passive and chilled out in life but this guy and Vics wife from the shield make me believe I could commit murder and it scares me.
>>

A perfect example of CBS shills false-flagging right here, now that their 'cgi sucks, jokes are bad' shit has failed they move onto falseflag posts to make it seem cringy, it may be a classic but its still obvious and lame.
>>
>>87625122
It is "ok". It's not as funny as I expected it to be, nor as good as I thought it might be. But if I have nothing else to watch and am bored, then it's the type of show I might download and binge watch. But I doubt I'll watch it weekly.

That being said, it's going to be a masterpiece in comparison to Star Trek: Discovery.
>>
>>87625122

The best joke in the pilot was one tha 99% of the viewing audience didn't even understand I'd bet.

The very first commerical break cut is fucking awkward like a syndicated tv show that puts a commercial break in a different spot than the original run. That joke won't really play on a torrent/steam or even netflix or dvd but I thought it was fucking hysterical.

It's literally TNG and the "comedy" angle is a thin justification to do literally TNG while pretending it's a parody.

It also lets the crew have some fun instead of being made of wood like in Trek so that's fine.

It's pretty good. I'm fine with having a new TNG remake.

If you're half decent at it you can even make it subtle enough that mods wont know to ban you because you just look like someone who genuinely enjoys the show, that's why I'm always suspicious of anyone who enjoys anything

How else would you like me to describe it? There were jokes that were clearly intended to be funny but ultimately failed to get any reaction from me. The joke failed, the joke wasn't funny, the jokes were underwhelming.
A common expression when describing an unfunny joke is "the joke fell flat". Its an expression that adequately describes The Orville which is why you have been hearing it alot lately. Its not part of a grand conspiracy. Can you honestly tell me that the jokes were laugh out loud hilarious?

>>87639317
I actually liked the space adventure aspect of the show and hope they focus on that more in future episode. All I said was that orville wasn't funny. You are the one getting butthurt over the fact that Seth McFarlane has made another shit show that will probably get cancelled.

Why do you think it'll be cancelled, is that one of the bullet points you were suppose to bring up?

>Galactica 1980
I watched it when it was new and I was 14. Holy crap what a thing to do to a kids mind back. But mercifully all I remember now is Starbuck in a white uniform in the middle of a desert. I just wish I could find that issue of Cracked magazine from ~6 months earlier where they parodied BG and in the last two frames they find earth and it's 1979. That made G80 so much weirder.

You mean the Mad magazine parody of OG BSG? I remember that

Damn, I was sure after all these years that it was in Cracked. Maybe that's why I never found it again.
