The whole point of carrying the ring with Frodo was that Sauron wouldn't expect it. Do you think Sauron wouldn't notice nine eagles bomb diving Mount Doom?

the whole point was that it was a big deception ruse. the eagles could have probably done well against the nazgul's fell-beasts, but Mordor would have been prepared with various measures.

Also, this would be 100% opposite to everything established about Gandalf's character who starts out as the leader of the fellowship. If Saruman was the leader of the fellowship, he would probably attempt this strategy while using magic at the helm and it would have a mediocre success rate.

Two possibilities.
1. That's precisely where they were going, and why they were going the direction they were going before having to go through Moria. Since Gandalf kept it a secret,for safety reasons, and he was the only one who had good ties with them and they'd do it for. Once he 'Died' That plan got nixed.

2. There's a lot of good reasons not to do this.
A. Nazgul and the Witch King of Ang-mar would wreck them.
B. Arrows, Ballistae, and the Eye of Sauron itself would WRECK them.
C. It'd be hugely obvious
D. It'd be really, really really difficult to fly through the smoke of a belching Volcano when you have to breathe still.
E. Too obvious and Sauron would see it coming
F. The Eagles might plain just tell Gandalf to Fuck Off.

Saruman's corruption was a huge blow because of the potential ally he could have been to the fellowship. Why do you think Gandalf goes way out of his way to inform Saruman about the current situation with the One Ring? Also, Saruman lending his support to the destruction of the ring would probably add a lot of weight to the plan after his constant delaying of the attack on Dol Guldur.

Yes, he promised to be neutral. He actually surrendered to numenorians, even though he could have destroyed Sauron before he gained control over numenorian king.

he promised to be neutral in the elf-lead war against Morgoth's army during the first age. Manwe was definitely not neutral in response to the corruption of the Numenoreans. He first sent the lightning clouds to the temple of Morgoth and was in charge of laying down the Guardianship of Arda. The forces in this war were lead by his associated maia/potentially two maiar and men against Sauron with loose guidance/support provided by elves.

I'm not arguing that this should have happened as evidenced by my first post, just that it could have happened.
