It just got stupid once the rat-suit assembly line happened. I think that Rick and Morty and other cartoons are usually best as Episodic series. Exploring a single interesting subject gives them complete freedom aside from recurring characters. Simpsons, Futurama, and Southpark all did fine as episodic series for a long time with only minor bits of continuity.

I didn't enjoy this episode. It was technically great from a writing standpoint, but none of the subplots really drew me in. The only thing that made the episode interesting for me was wondering what the motivations for "evil" Morty were.

The whole 'we all have the same iq' but we have very different stations in life spiel should have been omitted. All of the ricks conscripted into menial work for the citadel never really made sense throughout the show. A central assembly to govern Rick norms/rules did make sense though.

I've seen people saying this episode was 'redpilling' but maybe the only thing you are really agreeing with is the nihilism masking the message of the episode.

The seasons worst episode though was written by a guy (episode 6).

Generally speaking the writing is prettty weak, if a TV show goes so heavily into referencing stuff in season 3 already, you know they are having issues. I mean, episode 7 was extremely well done, but at the end of the day a mash-up of references. When they reference Stand by Me, you immediately like that scene, not because it was so great, but because you like Stand by Me. So yeah, on one hand it was done so on the point and perfectly mashed-up, but on the other hand it was just references. Having mixed feelings about it.

Then the always great bit about populists only being populist to grab power.

Then you have the entire subplot about the vicarious wish fulfillment cookies that exist to keep ricks complacent in their meaningless existences, which is a jab at all escapist media including rick and morty. With an added bit of the type of horror that is any situation built around being trapped in an endlessly looping simulation.

The show had something like four very well fleshed out and moderately intertwined storylines that didn't feel rushed or incomplete despite each one only having four and a half total minutes of screentime.
