Is Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet good? Is it worth the 4 hours watchtime?

Also: Whats the best Shakespeare adaptation?

It goes by pretty quickly. Branagh himself gives a great performance, and he doesn't hide from the spectacle, but a lot of scenes are too over the top or otherwise baffling. A lot of the more subtle moments of the play are turned into fanfic tier displays of emotion. When Hamlet confronts the Ghost of his father the ground beneath him is opening up and fire and lightning start shooting from under him. The arrival of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern on a little choo-choo train is so bizarre it's like a fucking art film.

Ultimately it's still good because it's pretty hard to fuck up Hamlet, but the Olivier version reigns supreme.

Disappointing as fuck. Branagh surrounds himself with the best supporting cast ever, then turns in the most embarrassing and hammy performance of his career. Most of the time he's just showboating, like he's getting off on how well he knows the text. Just cringeworthy.

The only watchable scenes are the ones he isn't it. Turns out Hamlet without Hamlet isn't such a bad idea after all.

I don't even know if you could answer that considering how many things use Shakespeare as source material.
