I just fucking wish horror movies would be more subtle with there scares. I tell you what is actually fucking terrifying is when a monster is in the background, not really in focus and isn't the main point of interest in the scene. When you actually see that fucker in the background and no one is paying attention to it you feel this deep sense of dread, like you're the only one that knows this thing is just watching and waiting.

Tell you what's not scary? A CLOWN JUMPING AT ME AND THE SOUND TRACK GOING BOOOOOOOOM.

I just want a horror movie that makes me feel uncomfortable hours after watching it, not something that startles me with some manufactured jump scare.

That's why Michael Myers is the GOAT Slasher/Horror movie killer, he's completely silent and calm and creeps up on his victims and the audience and his theme music is unsettling.

Why the fuck is this site so contrarian

Yeah capeshit is terrible despite it making tons of money but this was a decent film

I guess it takes a monster, to beat a hero.

When /tv/ tricked me into going to see a movie in the theater for the first time in 5 years and this was the fucking turd I broke the streak for. I am easy to scare. I can be kept up at night for weeks over subtlety scary things, or even scary imagery. This movie had absolutely fucking nothing except jumpscares. If you told me it was rated PG-13 I would believe you because it felt like every other god damn jumpscare-filled nu-horror movie made for the largest audience apart from like 2 scenes with gore.
>>

The movie was a 6/10 and very carefully made/marketed to make as much money as possible while not having any real depth. I would be surprised if a film enthusiast board DIDN'T shit on it.

If you're implying it will encourage hollywood to make more R-rated movies, it won't, it will just encourage them to bring back more 20 year old horror movies, just like how everyone thought Deadpool would encourage more R-rated movies, it just encouraged more R-rated super hero movies

>Is it really cinemas fault that anything more than superhero and flavor of the week action/horror movies makes you insecure??

Well it certainly isn't my fault.

Reasons why film is shit:

>Mandated cast diversity.
>Lack of strong American talent. What's with all the British talent lately? Why can't we get some good old fashioned American talent to play American characters? Some serious producer nonsense is going on.
>Growing foreign box office.
>Hispanic moviegoers now a majority of US ticket sales. Juan is going to spend $50 on a dumb movie like The Emoji Movie that his novia and his ninos can all see together.
>Inability of fresh faces to get a foothold in the industry.
>Left wing stranglehold on content.
>People are now so addicted to their phones, they can't be bothered to detach from them for 2 hours. Phones are probably the primary distribution channel for visual media now. The content has to be packaged into 15-30 min episodes. Great musical scores, special effects, and cinematography take a backseat to infantile scripts.
>Fragmentation of the market into niche audiences does more harm than good in the long run.

This. People don't seem to realise that horror has sub genres and they all get lumped in together. There's body horror, slasher, supernatural thriller, sci-fi horror ect ect. Some people will naturally be more scared of some types of horror over others. I shat myself during the Ring but find slasher flicks kinda kitch and funny.
>>
>>87588635

have you tried not watching shit and watching good movies instead?

you don't actually have to watch all of the movies that show up on your youtube and mcdonalds happy meal advertisements.

How about you make a list of your favorite directors and movies and then follow their work?

Are you saying that you've already watched all the good films that have been made so far?

Or will you only watch current American big budget movies because Avengers 6 is so topical.

Eh, they're boring to me. The key to not giving a shit about jump scares aside from years of desensitization if to enter a semi-zen state where even though you know a jump scare is coming you don't anticipate it or let it build up any tension so when it happens you're not all emotionally charged and ready to be scared.

I'm great against psychological horror but am weak against body horror, I just can't watch it without reeling
IT however just completely disappointed me. There are some movies that combined various aspects of different horror elements but they're so rarey nowadays its a shame.

Man, I had no idea. It's almost like they put money and time into a project and expected to receive money back for the work put into it. Crazy how the world works.
>>
>>87588233
Good is an understatement. It's breaking records, and far exceeding box office estimates. And it was a fine movie too, brings a tear to my eye.
>>
>>87591293
Because It is a PG-13 horror disguised as R rated horror. It's a fun adventure/coming of age film. Kermode compared it to The Goonies and Poltergeist and I agree with him. The kids and Skarsgard's acting are the best parts of the movie.
>>
>>87591009
There had to have been a cut scene where one of Richie's friends says "beep beep" to shut him up.
Pennywise saying that doesn't make sense without the context.

I just saw this today. I thought that literally everything without Pennywise was good. Every "scary" part was dogshit and ruined the movie for me.

Rate my taste.
>>
It was kind of like the goonies, it was cute I guess. I've noticed a lot of like 80s nostalgia movies in the last couple of years, like there was super 8, tron, both guardians of the galaxy, this, then there's gonna be ready player one.

It made me really sad though. something about the fact that it had a happy ending made me feel like i just wanted to lay down and stare at the wall for hours, like I'll never be a kid again, the girl was cute, blah blah blah just normal feels shit.

also I think one of the points of it was how innocence actually can be sort of maintained even through maturity and the shit of life. and I just don't know if that's true.
>>
>>87587319
It was okay, maybe a decent horror movie but it was not a good horror movie.
>>

I went to see IT today and came to the realization why cinema is dying.

It's not just the constant crap that gets shat out or the cash cows milked until dry that's driving people away from the theater. Nor is it only the rising ticket prices and obscene cost of food or drink once inside. These are contributing factors but ultimately it's the lower class scum, the dregs of humanity who talk to each other at full conversational volume and play around on their mobile devices, who get up for popcorn refills five or six times during a two hour show, and generally act like they're at home in their living room rather than in a public place which emphasizes a certain decorum -- this is the reason people aren't going to the movies much anymore. Why would any sensible person waste $20-30 on going to the movies only to face constant distraction from the animals in the theater with you. Why do these pieces of shit even spend the money to go see a movie if they have no intention of watching it?

I thought IT was ok btw

An R-rated horror film on an incredibly modest budget hit one completely out of the park, and it did so not on the strength of its effects, but on the strength of its story and the performances of its actors.

If anything, you should be hailing it as a turning of the tide away from effects-driven blockbuster extravaganzas so focus-tested and polished to the point where they're all shine and no soul.

In the end the consumer holds the power over cinema. If the consumer isn't happy about the product it will tank. IT succes doesn't come from people loving the movie, it comes from nostalgia (People who watched the mini-series as kids are now grown consumers) and the fact that the book is in mosts peoples Top 3 King books.

Look at Ghostbusters, people didn't buy into it even if it was showed down the throats on every person in the world (excluding china) and it still tanked hard.

If the movie is decent, it will have a slight drop after opening weekend. If it's shit it will have a huge drop. If it's a hidden gem it will have an increase.

Blaming the jews in Hollywood for wanting to make monkey is just stupid. It's their job to do it. If you don't like it, don't consume it. I know i won't watch it in the cinema.

They should just get rid of movie theaters and just have a paid subscription service to watch at home. I mainly watch bootlegs of new movies , but only because I have no friends and don't want to go to the movies by myself. If there was a service to watch the new movies I went in clear video than I actually would pay. It's just asking a lot from current generation to go out to the movies, especially since more and more American's are becoming less social.

Isnt what's scary relative to the person watching? I dont mean that some people can handle clowns and some can't but that some people dont really get scared by scary movies. Because movies dont scare me. Not psychological horror, not supernatural horror, nothing. No matter what the movie is, in the back of my head I still know that I'm watching a movie and watching a movie doesn't mean a psycho killer is going to murder me coincidentally on that same night. I havent gotten caught in a jump scare since The Ring came out. Apparently I'm not very good at getting engrossed in this stuff. I'm not just talking recent things I'm also talking about all your great classics that everybody says are scary.

I still like watching them though. I've been into this stuff since I was a kid. So I don't really consider the amount of scariness it has to be the end all be all when judging a horror film. I liked IT. I felt it went a little too fast and the CGI wasnt that great. Mike and Stan were almost just background characters. So it's not like it doesnt have its flaws. I liked the kids and I liked the clown.

The Witch was the shittiest excuse for a horror film I have ever seen. I have seen innumerable horror films spanning every decade of film, but this movie is what I would call, "NOT HORROR!".

I can only describe the film like a bad meal. Imagine someone waifing the delicious odors of a fine gourmet meal, even letting you peak once in a while at the preparation, and then when you're ready to eat, wait an hour, then give a spoonfull, and then throw everything away and wash the dishes. THAT is "The Witch".

Um, no. IT is the best Horror movie made in the past 100 years -- as evidenced by the box office.

Having booming sounds as Pennywise does something is a GREAT means to tell you when to be scared. It's, also, high-caliber directing to have jump scares -- those never get old and totally aren't cheap.

The scene with Pennywish shucking and jiving is the apex of Horror and nothing will be scarier.

Nah fuck yah, this adaptation deserves it. I've sat through way too many horror movies, me and two other friends would get together and marathon horror movies every weekend back in 8th grade and none of that prepared me for this film, it was really good. The evolution of CGI technology really benefited this film, the contortions of IT's face were actually really terrifying to look at.
Contrast in tone and having a lot of it be comedy helped it, by the end you haven't watched just some "scary movie", it was a story that had a journey and enjoyable characters that you end up rooting for, at least I did.
I was about to jump onto the hipster bandwagon and say "tim curry was better" because to be honest it just gave me a sense of superiority when in reality I had know idea what the fuck I was talking about cos I never saw the 90's adaptation, and I'm pretty sure neither did half the people who say it was better, I just know how people are.
This movie was good, the polarising views prove that it didn't just go for mass appeal and instead made sure to please its target audience as much as possible even if it comes at the cost of alienating others.
Ofcourse with how popular it has become a lot of people who didn't truly catch the appeal will say they loved it anyway just to fit in.

For me, the closest parallel I can draw is that it's a lot like John Carpenter's The Thing. It's not very spooky (but there were a few creepy scenes), but it's a lot of fun. It's kind of campy and enjoyable in places.

But horror movies, no matter how good, are rarely considered cinematic masterpieces. They just aren't considered high art (pretty much exclusively reserved for dramas).

But honestly, as far as horror movies go. It's probably genuinely the best one I've seen in about 5 years.

One more thing, It is a coming of age tale disguised as a horror movie. And it does a great job of it.

A solid 9/10. Anyone that's not into it is just trying to be a contrarian faggot.
>>
>>87587260

Can you shills once and for all tell me if its eyes are CGI or not? They look CGI in every frame. If they meant for it to look "otherworldly" then they should've did something that didn't just look like cheap yellow CGI eyes. The book never had yellow eyes except when it was in the darkness reflecting light like a cat.
>>
>>87591512
I think this is what disappointed most people. They didn't realise that a lot of IT is an adventure/coming of age story.

Most people have either not read the book, or have only seen the mini-series, but only remember the clown and spooky scenes.
>>
>>87604304
>For me, the closest parallel I can draw is that it's a lot like John Carpenter's The Thing
IT does do characters and main monster much better, otherwise it's a fair comparison.
>>
>>87596274

Because there's more going on in that scene than just a jump scare. The layering and depth of the shot are unsettling, and it doesn't do a literal cut to the 'monster'.

Popcorn horror movies suck but so do popcorn rom coms and comedies and action films. Anything that is generic gets old, especially when it's pretty obvious the entire thing has been machine-cut manufactured to be both a remake and modernized based off of corporate number crunching.

Good horror sometimes just has to originate from out of the blue or without corporate interference.

Fucking cucks the movie needed more edge, Georgie crawling with his arm ripped off is the best scene of the movie

just
whoag...
>>
>>87607342
So glad they put that scene in and didn't pussy out.

>>87607346
Not unnerving, but when he came out of the wall/projector and was fucking huge was a proper oh shit moment. Probably one of my favourite parts.
>>
>>87607492
Mike and Jay are fucking retards. It's a pissing clown dancing around and taking the forms of children's exaggerated fears. How the fuck do you make that subtle?
>>
For me it was after The Force Awakens came out and the hype settled down and I realized it was trash, and then ai looked ahead and realized all movies in hollywood are trash and have been for about 9 solid years now with no signs of stopping.
>>
>>87607637
Same, I knew it was coming from a fucking mile away and I still jumped. Likewise when Jewboy got jumped by the painting lady in the sewers.
>>
>>87607346
for me it was the same scene, but it was the librarian that scared me. while tits is reading the book it cuts to a reverse shot three times and in every one the librarian is staring at him witb a wider and wider smile. fuck I almost pissed myself
>>
>>87587022
'It' actually looks fairly good though.
>>
>>87607346
Right after when the headless kids chases Ben was great.

>>87607643
The movie did the source a fairly good job with what time they had, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a cut with at least an hour added on. I know the director wants to make a cut more like the book for the ultimate cut that goes back and forth between the two times.

All in all the thing I wished they worked on was how close Richie and Eddie were, in the book they are closer to each other then anyone else. Its what drives Richie to jump into the deadlights to fuck with IT, he grabs it by the tongue and does even more then Big Bill.
>>
>>87607868
It is good, but Hollywood is still majority garbage.
>>
I'm glad I don't know who this RLM faggot is, sounds like a pretentious shithead who only cares about making himself seem sophisticated and intelligent.
>>

That would be so cool. God that would do me so much service as a fan. I don't believe thats going to happen though

There will probably be a ultimate collection blu-ray after the adult movie gets dropped on home release. Its not out of the realm of possibilities since this is doing well in theaters, and after theater market is the bread and butter of a series of horror movies. There is a reason why Friday the 13th may be resurrected from the dead even though there are still a few legal problems stewing.

Home release is an insane market, Kevin Smith's career is based mostly on this. There is a reason Evil Dead gets released every other Halloween, there are five dvd versions of Army of Darkness right now, and people still fucking buy them.
>>
>>87607688
Well I didn't jump, but I suddenly sat up in my seat, because goddamn I liked what I saw. It took it up a whole new level from "regular clown who looks creepy" to "clown that could appear at any moment and be whatever size he pleases"

How many of you faggots have actually seen the film, I can tell most of you haven't by the way you talk about it
>MUH I DON'T WANT JUMPSCARES WHERE IS LE SLOW BUILD UP AND TENSION
that shit is literally in the film you would know that if you weren't fucking blind, instead you spout your reddit tier opinions

I wish, they are spooky as shit.
>>
>>87587022
It was more like a monster movie than horror. Not a single scary scene in the whole thing. Just a bunch of jump scares.
>>
>>87587484
literally my favorite horror movie.
>>
>>87608229
People don't understand that jumpscares are the payoff for atmosphere and tension.

You build tension, then you have a jumpscare, or you act like you will to get people on the edge of their seat, then nothing. It's about keeping people on edge not knowing if there will be a scare or not.

People who complain about that stuff would probably go to a hooker, pay, and then leave after foreplay.

>>
>>87608434
not necessarily. you can have genuine horror in a movie without a single jumpscare.
>>
>>87588635
The reasons you just mentioned are all mostly superficial and don't make a movie bad in a objective sense. You're lambasting a movie because there's a "diverse" cast? Because no American actors?
Actors are puppets on a string and they tell the story the director/writer wants to tell. It doesn't matter where they come from, what only matters is that they excel in their job.
That attitude towards cinema is foolish. It's stupid to bring elements outside of the movie and then harshly lash it because of those reasons.
>ps. watch more indie movies

VERY WELL PUT,ANON!

The fact that im the only one to repond to your post shows how seriously you should take the average /tv/ poster.

New 2017 'it' isnt some Hollywood jumpscare bullshit!
Its a story about a group of kids facing there worst fears!
They were even smart enough to splt it into 2 films instead of cramming a 1000 page book into 2 hours

someone post clown doing russian dance webm, i forgot to save it last time i saw it

Notice that these 2 retards didn't put any coherent and well though out post about the movie and just spergs about /tv/ and "muh nostalgia" of all things? That's how shit the movie is. After this post I would guarantee that they're too retarded to make an argument.
>>
>>87587260

That's exactly what happens in the library scene though. The fat kid starts reading the book about Derry's history and the librarian just creepily stands in the background grinning at him.
