The Orville premieres in 10 minutes. Who here ready for the spiritual successor to Star Trek? Who here ready for it to blow Discovery out of the water?

I am so FREAKING pumped, broskis.

Damn straight, OP. Jacked up and good to go.
>>
>>87580799

Hasn't been getting great reviews so far, and we may be in for an awkward first season. So basically this is trek.
>>
Why do all the women have to wear trousers? They should all wear short but not miniskirt short skirts and pantyhose.
>>
>>87580919
I'll trust trek fans over reviewers. I think this show is meant for us and the reviewers don't really get that.
>>
scifi show on fox, it will be dead in 6 months. If it doesn't get canned immediately they'll start fucking with the time slot in the next 30 days (like they always do). It'll move from Sundays to Tuesdays to Thursdays and then to Wednesday, they'll make it impossible for it to build an audience.

So far kinda feels like Seth is holding back because he wants this to be a genuine love letter to Trek and not just Family Guy or Ted in Space.

its an attempt at sincere drama with comedy mixed in

>>
>>87582263
they made the pilot like that because fox wouldn't let them do a serious sci fi show so they pitched it as a comedy. it is supposed to get more serious n later episodes

I tuned in late, but what I saw was very cringy and unfunny. It reminded me of Seth's Wild West film, which was also mediocre. The effects were mostly good for TV, and certain shots/scenes felt very much like Star Trek, but for someone who isn't a big fan of Star Trek, so what (I have barely watched the original series and none of Picard's series)? Instead of shoehorning Seth-isms into a classic narrative style, why not create something organic?

I would rate "Sci-Fi Movie: the Show" lower, but I think it has potential and maybe the pilot was just fucked to sell the show.

the races aren't the problem, the problem is that "diversity" is the entire selling point of the show. Trying to sell Star trek on diversity alone, is like trying to sell a car on "it runs on gasoline!"

no shit Star trek is diverse. that's never been the main selling point, that's the setting.

also, it's another prequel series set between Enterprise and ToS, which is incredibly limiting, and the cast just is not that impressive.

Let's also not forget the OC DONUT STEEL SPOCK'S SISTER WE NEVER KNEW HE HAD ZOMG

and the fact that it is trying to fit into the original trek universe's world, while at the same time being a JJ trek Tv show that takes cues from those movies. making it look nothing like a prequel.

the races of the characters are the LEAST of it's problems. Nobody ever had a problem with Deep Space 9.

Every other Star Trek is literally a cast of different races and fucking SPECIES.

The point was that they were more than just skin-deep. The entire point of Star Trek is that it's 300 years into the future, where we as a species have finally gone beyond all that superficial stuff, so nobody cares about it anymore.

By stressing that fact in STD, they completely fucking miss the point.

Yes and no. There were some very obvious distinct features about each character that made them original.

But even then, the development of the characters was because of the STORY and the fact that the characters had more going on around them. I'm 90% sure that STD is going to relate every aspect of the story back to race/ethnicity/nationality/sexuality/gender.

This actually feels like a satire that has soul behind it. Also one that's not mean-spirited towards the source material.

Seth being a trek fan really shows. The show has potential, but I just don't see it surviving on network TV for more than a season. The only way it survives is if this network season is a dead zone and the show's quality upticks dramatically.

I was at Dragon Con last weekend, and on one of the Trek panels they told a pretty interesting story. Who the fuck was talking about STD? It will be shit too, that doesn't mean another Macfarlane shitshow will be good.
>>
>>87584807
it will have gay white males as confirmed by the creators but not gay females since the main character is an empowered black woman symbolizing our resistance to Trump.

dunno Orville looked good and it was just part 1 with part 2 still coming. Dont care at all about the new jj trek STD desu it looks like ten tons of failure.
>>
>>87584908
Hm...that's okay too
>>
>>87584908
It would be pretty damn funny if the way Orville portrays Bortis is handled better than how STD will deal with gay-whatever-ish-ness.
>>

Gay women aren't empowering enough, need gay men that the women can confide in about the patriarchy to.

>tfw the new supergay Xena was cancelled
>>
>>87584908
as long as the gays are white im ok with it since white people need to learn their place which is what STD is all about.

I think that is the difference, STD seems to be more preachy from what the creators are saying and shoving it in your face. Where in orville things seem more organic and natural which is more enjoyable to watch and better writing.

It really should have been a two-hour Premiere episode. All the World building and cast introduction at the beginning really forced them to rush the last half of the story

>tfw just woke up and missed it

skip to 10:50

Hold the fuck on, Nicholas Meyer is involved? If it turns out to be a train wreck, all is lost for Star Trek.

It better be navel as fuck like II and VI.
>>
I love the sheer amount of Star Trek in jokes sprinkled around the set. It's definitely freeze-frame worthy.

Also, the future episodes are almost all going to be directed by old Star Trek cast and crew members.
