Luke and old Ben will forever be the best Jedi. Luke learned how to balance the force in a matter of a few years, using both dark and light without over committing to one side. And Obi the only Jedi to avoid a painful death mid battle by demonstrating his immense light side force power. Luke was so powerful he could feel the tiny sliver of light left in Darth Vader, not even the emperor could sense. For a Jedi with very limited training he held his own vs a Jedi exterminator pro, Vader. Honestly, Luke is a fantastic character who goes through a well thought-out arc in the OT. Anyone who criticizes him for being whiny or boring is only thinking of the first scenes in New Hope, which is before he gets character growth. Hamill does a good job portraying him throughout as well.

That's not what happened. Star Wars OT was relaunched in the mid 90s before the prequels came out, there was a big theatrical run, a ton of new toys on the same scale as the new ones, but of the original trilogy, 25-30 year olds grew up with the OT without the nostalgia of their parents, who were mostly a bit old for Star Wars the first time it came out.

It's the Gen Xers who had to show their kids the OT in the 2000s. Boomers werent really into Star Wars.

Movies are a midway between art and product, but the get closer to art when one person has more creative control. Lucas wrote, directed, and produced the prequel trilogy, in addition to directly overseeing editing and art design. You may not like that you payed money for it, but it's still someone's artistic vision in the same way a book or an album is.

He's great because he sucks. He fails at almost everything he tries. Sure he blows up the Death Star, but even that takes help from Han. Apart from that he has to get his ass saved by Obi-Wan from Tuskens and Aliens at the Bar. Leia starts leading her own rescue mission after they get her out her cell because Luke and Han are so incompetent. Han has to save his ass from a Wampa attack. Yoda has to get his ride out of the swamp. Darth Vader whoops his ass. He completely botches Han Solo's rescue mission and endangers all of his friends, making the whole ordeal way more complicated than it needed to be. He's able to kick Darth Vader's ass eventually, but chooses non violence in the end. Which is a million times more interesting and emotionally compelling than just killing/beating the shit out of the bad guy.

A hero that doesn't grow is a pretty boring thing. One of the most compelling things about Luke is that he's constantly in over his head, but he only puts himself in these situations because he's so loyal to his friends. I think he had a pretty nice arc, and I think Lucas left him on the implied note that he was finally a full blown Jedi worthy among the ranks of Yoda and Obi-Wan. So it's kind of a bummer that 30 years later he still is fucking up. There's really no reason why you should feel obligated to consider the post-Lucas stuff canon though. It quite literally is just fan fiction with a budget. You can consider canon, it technically is, but at the same time it has no input from the original storyteller.

Luke is quite clearly the main character in Return of the Jedi. Han is the one who has nothing to do in that movie. His arc is complete right before he gets frozen. It was their way of writing him off in case they couldn't get him back. Return of the Jedi just has him going through the motions.

It confuses me how some of you can have such a strong opinion about how TFA ruined Luke's character when he's basically not even in the movie.

He's a favorite. He reaches true badassery in the finale battle with Vader in ROTJ. With that music behind him it just solidifies what an arc it has been and the true obstacles he has gone through. Hamil does a great job playing him.

Protagonists these days can't be whiny or immature anymore - like Luke in Episode 4. They also can't underestimate their enemies, like Luke in Episode 5. The only heroes we have now are infallible. Experts in their field right from the getgo. Full of confidence and quips and wit, and "cool" from the start. Ie. Chris Pratt in Jurassic World (he fucking sucks btw).

Luke is ironically us in Episode 4, with Luke newly experiencing and discovering the world as we do throughout the story's progession.

Because of his youthful innocence and his eagerness to rush off on an adventure half-cocked as well as his penchant for letting his emotions guide him (until ROTJ). Plus he didn't master the force at the drop of a hat. The one thing that was kind of questionable was in ANH, where you find out late in the movie that he apparently was a good pilot. But it didn't matter b/c the Rebellion needed all the help it could get with the Death Star bearing down on them, so they threw Luke in an X-Wing and basically said, "Fuck it, if he wants to throw his life away, let him. Just one more man to throw at that moon-sized death machine as a last ditch effort." So you know he's a good pilot and then that ability gets augmented by latent Force powers he's made aware of by Obi Wan (and he even got a little training in to try and sense the Force and let it flow through him naturally). In Empire, he still hasn't quite gotten the hang of things b/c he hasn't received proper training. He gets wrecked by a Hoth Wampa and barely escapes when he struggles to call his lightsaber to him that's stuck in the ice. Then he has to get stuck in the guts of a Taun Taun by Han to not freeze to death. Even in ROTJ where he has more control of the Force, he underestimates Jabba and gets stuck in a tough situation in the rancor pit w/out his lightsaber and has to improvise his way out.

Luke was a good character, he had heroic leanings and wanted to do good things. He was skilled but never dominant. He was always on his back foot which is what makes people think he's a loser. Examples:

A New Hope:
He's stuck on a desert planet when we meet him, his new droid fucks off and he has to search for them, the sand people show up and fuck his shit up, he returns home and his aunt/uncle have been murdered. He tries to accompany his new friend Obi-Wan to Alderaan but it's been blown up and they get captured by the Death Star. His new friend who was going to teach him to be a Jedi gets killed in front of him. He participates in an attack on said death star with the rebel alliance where he meets up with and then watches the death of his best friend Biggs from back home, along with every single other pilot in his squadron aside from Wedge. He blows up the death star because Han Solo saved him and he closed his eyes and shot.

The Empire Strikes Back:
Gets ambushed and almost eaten by an ice monster. Escapes but almost freezes to death on the surface, is rescued by Han Solo. Recuperates in time to participate in resisting the Imperial invasion of Hoth. Has his enthusiastic new gunner shot out from behind him. Gets shot down and crash lands, barely makes it back to his ship to escape. Goes to Degobah and crashes into the swamp. Fails most of Yoda's tests, has a vision his friends are in extreme pain, leaves for cloud city. Falls into a trap set by Darth Vader. Gets his ass kicked by Darth Vader in the best lightsaber fight in the entire trilogy. Has his hand cut off, learns the 2nd most evil guy in the galaxy is his dad, almost falls to his death, his new best bud Han goes off to Jabba's palace.

Return of the Jedi (the only one he's almost a badass in):
Goes to free his friends at Jabba's palace, instead gets thrown into a pit and almost eaten by a giant monster which he manages to defeat. Gets re-captured to be thrown at another monster. Escapes, kills people, saves his friends. Goes to degobah and watches Yoda die, realizes he kissed his sister in the last movie. Volunteers for dangerous mission on Endor, knowingly endangering everyone in order to get himself captured. Fails to convince his father to come back to the good side. Has to fight his own father. Gets worked up and chops his arm off this time, instantly regrets it. Gets electrocuted by the emperor. His dad gets up, picks up the emperor and throws him down a pit to save Luke's life. Luke watches as his newly turned good guy father dies in his arms, barely escapes space station his own people are blowing up.

Point is, he's more of the fish out of water character without having no knowledge of the universe around him. He knows where he is and what he's doing for the most part, aside from having convenient ignorance of the force and the jedi in a new hope so Obi-Wan can explain it to everyone, but his actions are that of the fish out of water protagonist. I think of him sort of like Marty McFly. Marty sort of stumbles his way through, but he has an arc. He isn't perfect but he's trying to do the right thing so we root for him. I like characters with flaws, weaknesses, mistakes. It made Luke more human and likeable. I'd put him down as a favorite because as much as Han Solo is a badass and has his own arc and struggles, the story of Luke contains more growth. Han just becomes less of a dickhead by the end of Jedi, which is actually a detriment to his original rogueish character imo.
