Episode defies logic, quite literally it is unconcerned with narrative threads, it places Cooper in another story, and the entire episode is carried by its mood. By far the most emotionally evocative episode of The Return.

So what's the consenseous on the roadhouse scenes/music?
I really didn't care about any of the roadhouse characters that showed up in the booths, and I thought all the music was disappointing - Lynch has clearly lost his touch for music performance. They were no In Dreams or Love Me tender.
The roadhouse was without doubt the worst parts for me. Still, that ending after Dougie became friends with the Mitchium brothers was good.

The truth of this matter is that there is no solid foundation for a love interest with Cooper in the series, that's pretty much all there is to it.

Annie was a contrived love interest introduced late into season 2, because they had to can the one with Audrey and needed something to replace it with. It was terrible, and in terms of "saving annie" there's pretty much no weight to that relationship at all in the finale, which s why Lynch brings it around and brings back Laura for it instead.

The Return needed a love interest, but they still didn't have a clearly defined one. Diane works as well as the others would have. At least Dern is a fantastic actress.

I think I figured it out. When bowie shows cooper the judy symbol becoming a figure 8, he's telling cooper how judy perceives time. To her, it occurs all at once with the circle representing humans as they move through it. When cooper asks what year is it, the laura judy created can't answer. She knows she should know, and therefore becomes aware that this is a dream, like a lucidity test, because judy is literally unable to conceive time in the way humans do, her construct can't answer this question. This destroys judys dream and none of it ever happened. Laura wakes up in 1989.

The finale uses it's editing, script, and the actors performances (especially Kyle) masterfully the whole time to make it seem like a ton of different things could be happening and it makes you wonder what is happening and when it's happening the whole time. Every minute of the episode plays off of and warps your expectations based on everything leading up to this moment, and through visually storytelling makes you feel exactly the same emotions that Cooper does.
