Fascism is always a response to communism.

The problem with this is that many of these guys were literal Stalinists, and even the ones who weren't were still communists. McCarthy was wrong to try to ruin all these people's careers over their political belief but at the same time he turned out to be almost entirely correct, and when you're talking about people high up in the US government it's a pretty big deal if someone is secretly following the ideology of a rival nation
