Yeah it makes no sense whatsoever, launching the shuttle isn't something you do at the drop of a hat. It takes weeks/months to prepare and set everything up. Even if some world ending catastrophe happened just before the launch it doesn't explain what happened to the launch structure. If that eroded away overtime then the shuttle itself certainly would have long before.

That's not even half of it.
That isn't erosion, that's a new face of rock and dirt that specifically built up around this one shuttle.
This kins of formation doesn't happen without pretty fucking massive earthquakes that would have destroyed the shuttle, and even if the shuttle is made out of "fuck off, metal too stronk" science materials. when that mass of stone rose up, it would have pushed the shuttle out of the way instead of fusing with it somehow.
