Original series: Great, original ideas and magnificent implementation.
The Return: Shit, unoriginal ideas and shit implementation.

>no set design, feels empty and lifeless
>no interesting ideas for storylines and generally bad writing
>relies on gimmicks only instead
>those are unoriginal or just bad, unfortunately ("fuck you, albert", glove, andy and lucy, coordinates, riddles, ...)
>bad acting (Bell, Lynch, Horse, Robertson, Dern, ...)
>dull characters (one-dimensional at best)
>storylines and characters are introduced for no purpose
>everything is supposed to weirdly connect and make sense
>shot in digital in a way that doesn't compensate for the technology's disadvantages (looks bad)
>roadhouse scenes (out of place, badly shot, the songs, the bands, the extras, ...)
>student-tier storytelling/editing (characters are shown walking up complete sets of stairs)
>stretched out needlessly, long takes have no particular effect
>everything above is literally cringe-tier in concept and implementation
>obviously delusional and/or inexperienced fanbase perceiving it as particularly meaningful, complex or "deep"
>can't compare to the original series that doesn't have those problems (coherent/complex and beautiful sets, costumes and make-up/well shot/well acted/well written/magnificent multi-dimensional characters and character relations, music, storylines and gimmicks/creates a unique athmosphere as a result, changing the world of television forever whereas "the return" neither manages to do something established really good nor to invent something new)

>>
>>87423029

The original Twin Peaks was a once in a lifetime phenomenon. It was one of the few times that Lynch opened up his creative mind to work with other people. Not just Mark Frost, but a whole team of writers, directors, and studio executives. Lynch was forced to make compromises and reign himself in, in order to bring his unique directorial vision to a mass audience.

We'll never see a show like the original Twin Peaks ever again. It was dark and surreal, but also had an innocent charm and humor to it. It was a show about a girl who was raped and murdered, but there were no explicit sex scenes and nobody cussed stronger than the occasional "bitch." Mainstream television today has no interest in having a show with art house sensibilities, and the only place that accepts such shows are subscription based networks that require their shows to meet a quota of graphic sex scenes, violence, and profanity. The Young fucking Pope had CARDINALS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH saying "fuck" and "shit."

Don't get me wrong. I fucking loved The Return. But I went into it expecting Twin Peaks as a David Lynch movie, and that's pretty much what it was.
>>
So what happens to Laura and Coop, after the lights go out? This is assuming that they would even exist at that point.

So? Enjoying Dougie doesn't mean we didn't prefer for the real Cooper to come back and some plot progression to take place.
>>
>>87422891
This is unironically true. Twin Peaks literally changed modern storytelling. Twin Peaks: The Return is just Lynch jerking himself off for 18 hours. Nobody is going to care about The Return in a month, but the original run will always be an important part of television history.

Bill Hastings talks about meeting Briggs in The Zone to give him coordinates. Him and Ruth go back a couple days later and then they're attacked by some "people" (woodsmen most likely) and then they ask for his wife's name. He then wakes up at home, but Ruth is murdered and Hastings' fingerprints are all over her apartment. She also has a hole in her eye. Phyllis gets shot the same way by Mr. C, so presumably she's working with them, and a woodsman even oversees her visit to the prison. When Gordon and co. visit the zone in ep. 11, the woodsmen are there and it opens a vortex to the place above the convience store/Dutchman's. Briggs says he was "hibernating" there and he needed to travel somewhere else to be safe (White Lodge/giant's place). A couple questions:

>If Judy is the one who calls Mr. C on the phone in episode 2, how did she know he met with Major Briggs? And is Mr. C only concerned because of this call because he isn't familiar with Judy on the other line? Is Mr. C's endgame to stay with BOB?

i always found this dialogue weird because considering that harry introduced coop to the Bookhouse boys he was the skeptic in this scene. but rewatching now i think cooper "is it more comforting" line is directed at us viewers. i know many fans people see leland as without agency and 100% possessed but in FWWM i saw a different picture, and somehow i think that was reinforced in the return. i even saw some people here theorize that even in a bob-less universe/reality, the real tragedy is that a father raping his daughter is still plausible and laura may still be a victim. what do you guys think?

>Enlighten me on the "right questions"
I'm just saying it's pointless to be disappointed that all the plot lines of S3 have no resolution. They were all mini narratives fueled by unresolved conflicts banging around in Coop's dreaming subconscious. They all "mean" something insofar as they reflect Coop's mental state. However, they don't mean much when taken as vital narrative plot points in a conventional narrative structure. Don't ask how Red learned magic tricks and why he does them. Ask why Coop fears such a dangerous adversary.

You telling me that when you started watching The Return you were excepting a mindless buffoon as the main character? Yeah, I don't believe that. Him being likeable doesn't excuse the fact that his character was pure filler. And if 18 episodes were too much to tell the story, then Lynch should have taken the original deal of 8 episodes. Then it wouldn't feel redundant at all and every episode wouldn't have mandatory 30 minutes of sweeping floors and Roadhouse singers.

Exaggerated number of characters who are quickly introduced to never to come back
Some absurd characters who are there only as a one off joke (Wally / Smarf)
Exaggerated genre and tonal shift alternating between comedy and grisly murder
Several sequences that are inserted to feel out of place and make the viewer wonder what he's watching
Unconventional editing (shots and sequences that are purposefully kept too long)
Awkward effects with sinister undertones to reinforce the disconnect the viewer is feeling
Pessimistic out of nowhere ending before ending on a somewhat more positive note

Overall I am both satisfied and not satisfied with S3 and I think that's precisely what Lynched planned.

At times it is painfully obvious he's just fucking around with audience expectations but in the end it all somehow adds up in a dream-logic way, which is Lynch's entire shtick.

Lynch is a lazy hack who can't even do his one job as an artist. Surreal art and abstract art is made by talentless, lazy people. If you like season 3 , Lynch or surrealism in general, you should kill yourself or get better taste and admit it's garbage.

I wasn't expecting anything, but I was certainly very pleased with what I got with dougie. call his character "filler" all you want, to me it was a way of harkening back to the comfy/wacky/heartwarming tone of the original series without it feeling like a rehash.

>every episode wouldn't have mandatory 30 minutes of sweeping floors and Roadhouse singers.
tone down the hyperbole and you might have a point, but I genuinely believe the musical acts was lynch using showtime money to promote and give airtime to artists he felt deserved more attention, which is a brilliant use of his platform in my eyes.

I think that the point of the Roadhouse scene was to establish a certain kind of mood where we (the audience) are watching a performance.
It's good for ending each episode in a brain-relaxing way and the whole thing also served to anticipate the Audrey "twist" ending with her coma or whatever.
It also goes well with the notion that the "world" of Twin Peaks is somehow a layered and malleable dream full of weird characters, but also has a certain sense of style to it.

If they continue with a fourth Season then Return was not shit. But if they do not, it really sucks a lot of the enjoyment I had out of the show.
I, at first, was very pleased with the direction that Lynch was taking with Twin Peaks. It felt like he was combining the camp of the original with the surreal nature of his other works. The way he was introducing plots and then explaining them along the way was really exciting. Because he introduced everything with that air of surreality, it made the connections so much more enjoyable. Ex: South Dakota connected with Major Briggs and Twin Peaks.
But honestly the last episode was just terrible if it doesn't get continued. There's more than a fuckton of plots Lynch didn't bother closing. It felt like Season 2 cliffhanger all over again, except this time people are loving it because the rest of Returns was pretty great.
>>
>>87424818
I really think they discovery wrote the show then tacked on the two and a half last episodes to resolve what became the main plot thread but never went back and pruned what didn't pan out (they just said "fuck it, those parts were still interesting, let's keep them).

How many of the actors are going to defend the ending and how many are going to be LYNCHED like Julee Cruise?

Kyle, Laura Dern, and Sheryl Lee are clearly Lynch loyalists who will defend anything he does. Sherilyn Fenn knew she didn't have anymore scenes after waking up so she probably predicted that whatever the ending was, it was going to be dark as fuck. The actors exclusive to the Return probably don't give a fuck and are just happy to work in a Lynch project.

I don't know how the rest of them will feel, though.
>>
>>87424857
Lynch didn't want him back. It's like when Loggia was pissed that Hopper got the roll of Booth. Lynch is a psychopath who pits actors against one another.

Only one I agree with is Red.

Dr. Amp got Norma and Ed back together
Becky and steven's retarded relationship brought us shelly and bobby together.
Gordon's investigation was some of the most enjoyable scenes in the show. Most if not all were hilarious and entertaining.
Diane gave us Wilson and angry FBI man and verified proof of tulpas in the TP world.

1-16 was genuinely beautiful television and possibly one of the last good things we're ever going to see on the medium
17 was subversive modern art garbage where making something stupid on porpouse and shitting on the past 16 hours and the audience for caring is somehow genious
If Bob were defeated in a crazy capeshit fight by joke characters during season 2 after dropping every single plotline, people would legitimately call it garbage and they would be right

I don't know why you're quoting me, but it's just my personal taste that I liked episodes 1 to 16 so I didn't like the implication that I was retarded for enjoying them which was episode 17
Some of the best moments in the original run of twin peaks were extremely human and emotionally realistic (like Bobby getting pissed off at Laura's funeral or his relationship with his father, just off the top of my head) and I felt episodes 1-16 captured at least part of that, while episode 17 was mere deconstruction of the medium where plot and characters take a backseat to a heavy handed message.
I thought 18 was beautiful in its own right though but wasting 16 hours of build up just for a practical joke on the audience doesen't sit right with me
Again, just my personal opinion, believe it or not you are entitled to have one

If you are upset that some storylines seem "pointless" or don't think they were climactic or resolved enough, than you have obviously missed the point. The point of Twin Peaks has always been to subvert the predictable structure of TV shows and give us something unpredictable. Its about enjoying every scene, its not a race to some satisfying Hollywood finish. Lynch didn't even initially plan to ever reveal Laura's killer.

Lynch is mocking the viewer's expectation for closure. That's what Blue Rose represents. If you're looking for answers, if you're looking to understand completely the meaning and wrap up every loose end, you will be lost. Cooper, who represents the analytical viewer, is lost. Windom Earle is lost. Phillip Jefferies and Major Briggs are lost. This has always been Lynch's vision and its what makes his art great.
