I liked it, and I liked that version of the Doctor, although I don't think it was strong enough to be what it was attempting - i.e. a continuation of the show.

Yeah, I thought so. If the animation quality had improved, it might've been good... but it left a lot to be desired, honestly. But, y'know, I suppose I can't judge too much, because I don't have the perspective of someone who was a fan of the classic stuff back when it first aired. Perhaps they would've loved it regardless, if there had been no possibility of any other revival. The story was solid enough on its own.

Bleh. To each their own. I find Roberts at his best with Comfy, something series 10 wasnt much. Whithouse meanwhile delivered under the lake\before the flood and god complex, both of which beat the ever loving shit out of anything roberts has written in script form.
Which isn't to say Roberts is a bad writer, Only Human is book kino. But he brain drains on scripts and its clear he just can't translate his writing to an actual cast. When big finish did his stuff for novel adaptations, they were great stuff, nothing like his tv scripts. Whoever did the adaptation for him should get am award and a payraise for the translation. The only Whithouse Who script I've properly enjoyed is God Complex, his 2parter in s9 partially skates by because doing a more typical base under siege story at that point in the series was important, but he found plenty of ways to cock it up to my tastes. Roberts has a with and self awareness that serves (served?) him well on Doctor Who, Whithouse has a juvenile obsession with putting the same scenes of the Doctor being edgy and a side character telling him he's bad in EVERY SINGLE ONE of his stories regardless of how little they fit tonally or character wise.

See, its clever if he sat down and pointed it out before revealing why it was all necessary. In that way, power of 3 was a clever twist on that, but roberts didn't write that. The closest he ever got was The Lodger, but even then it wasnt super self aware because it was the first time he delivered that story.
But when the caretaker came out, thats when it got ridiculous: i mean, did he just hand back in the script for the lodger and change amy to clara? How much work did moff put into it to give himself a credit? And yet there it was with a similar premise: doctor hangs around for a while getting his nose in peoples personal lives while an alien menace starts a slow invasion.
I mean, i may not like lie of the land; but its distinctly different from a town called mercy.

I don't agree with your assessment of Roberts' stories, and think it's a clumsy and reductive approach, but we're certainly coming at this from different ways and I'm sure there are different things we track in the stories, so there's certainly no question of validity. I also don't think "X story would be better if the writer..." usually lends itself to any sort of productive conversation. It's all just projection and obfuscates what the story was going for, and how complicated tv production is.
In 2014 moff decided to do what rtd didn't do until 2009 and credit himself in other writer's stories he was heavily involved in, or wrote significant portions of. The Danny sections in Into the Dalek would be all him (very Chalk, and tired into the "main" story of the series), presumably The Caretaker went similarly. The whimsy could be Roberts, moments like the soldier scenes were assuredly Moffat
