When Robert overthrew the Targaryens, he opened the door for anybody to become king if they could seize the Iron Throne and despite being bi-sexual, Renly was young and could more than likely produce a male heir and regardless of Catelyn’s opinion, Renly wasn’t stupid and would probably have been a good king.

Supporting Stannis would only have resulted in more war, as many of the nobility wouldn’t have wanted him as king and would have either sided with Joffrey or even attempted to seize the throne themselves.

Not counting the show because the villains don't suffer consequences for their actions in that, he made two major mistakes in the books:

1. He fucked up badly raising his children, who except for Tyrion can't handle themselves after his death and Kevan's death

2. The Red Wedding left a sour taste in everyone's mouth in the Kingdom and basically the gloves are off if the Lannister try to fight anyone again. Which will likely help result in his retarded children losing their power and their house to the Faith Militant and Aegon

This is way overplayed in discussions about the story.

Outside of Lady Olenna, (who has far too high of an opinion of herself) there’s no evidence the Tyrells are some kinda cunning master plotters, pulling all the strings behind the scenes.

Sure, Margaery was pretty sharp but she seemed to have no problem with Renly’s bi-sexuality (it’s implied she is bi-sexual also) and it was in her interest to insure his success as king, Mace Tyrell as easy to read as a book, Garlan Tyrell is a straight up good person, Loras was completely loyal to Renly and while we don’t know much about Willas Tyrell, he seems like a another straight up good person.

If anything, the Tyrells would have acted as a break on any possible wild behavior Renly might display.

They seem like a pretty conservative and sensible family and are particularly concerned about their status in Westeros, not having been kings in their own right prior to the Targaryens, so they’re not going to want to sully that now that their own blood will eventually sit the Iron Throne.
