I think it did really well at portraying the horror of war, I got that sinking feeling in my stomach in several scenes.
Then in contrast it was able to show how Desmond was able to push past that horrific feeling and get to work doing something productive - which creates a positive feeling even in a fucked up situation.
That positive feeling then inspired the rest of the division and they too were able to overcome the crippling horror.

Desmond's heart and soul shine a light on this horrible fact of war and he is hated for it, but the spiritually perceptive viewer will understand the importance of this

Then we see the war itself and the darkness is not hidden or obfuscated in any way. It is presented so viscerally that few if any films come close to depicting war as what it is: the absolute worst thing that a human can experience. It is shown as if it were hell itself. Your gut is supposed to churn, you're supposed to feel sick or even brought to tears by the violence on screen. it should upset you. it should seem as if there is a void, a vacuum of goodness happening there. And then we see what Desmond does. He holds true to his conviction and God uses him to redeem the most horrifying place in the world; the battlefield. God allows there to be grace and mercy in the worst place imaginable where without him there is no hope. In turn we see how his actions affect the men in his company; they too are redeemed by seeing what Desmond was capable of through his conviction to hold true to goodness and goodness only. These men who otherwise would have died with their souls full of hate and their hearts full of fear were saved
