I don't pay attention to critics because they're just people who, like everyone else, have different tastes in shows but the difference is they state publicly their opinions. I prefer to watch trailers to see if a show is to my liking or not.

>Variety is a woman's magazine like Cosmo?
idk, anon asked what magazine she worked for as tv critic, and google supplied the title
>>
>>87394639

a lot of people not just in marketing department could have spotted and stopped that like the producers and network executives. makes me wonder if people were working full-time on STD or if they were all working on other projects and working on STD for an hour each week.
>>
>>87394003
He said it was more Star Trek than Family Goy so no doubt it's a bad version of both.
>>
>>87394769
it's so obvious that it has to be intentional, right?
the other option is that STD has fallen out of favor, and STI "sexually transmitted infection" is modern medical parlance and this provided an excuse
maybe both
>>
>>87394826

that could be true. a lot of kids these days are so limited/narrow in what they know of the world that they probably don't know STD and only know STI or they don't know both abbreviations and use clamydia as generic term for all STDs. but i doubt that everyone involved in STD are kids so someone would have noticed it. my guess is that everyone is so busy and rushed that they did not have time to think about it.

a more likely scenario just occurred to me. maybe someone very powerful in the network who screams at anyone disagreeing with him loudly expressed his preference for Star Trek Discovery name for show and everyone else are too scared to point out it's STD.

We all want it to be better than Discovery so that CBS will quit the prequel bullshit and give us a real new Star Trek show, without mismatched tech, continuity-mangling make-up or synergy squandering. Maybe even put it on TV instead of hiding it on a Johnny Come Lately own-brand streaming leper colony.
>>
>>87395621
“Star Trek Discovery” will also have robots and many aliens, and possibly even alien-human sex, since CBS All Access won’t fall under the network’s Standards and Practices rules. “Why do you think we call it STD?” Fuller joked.

>I don't pay attention to critics because they're just people who, like everyone else, have different tastes in shows
that's literally the point. you calibrate your reading of the review based on what you know about the reviewer, predicated on the assumption that their reviews aren't totally arbitrary. and their reputation accumulates over time as they publish reviews that are reliable given their biases.

this is why critics hate Armond White. he's not just a critic who's an arrogant, rude bastard. he also takes these arbitrary, contrarian opinions that can only be predicted by asking "what would probably be the most objectionable thing to say right now?". he's a bad critic because his reviews can't be used to predict whether anyone will like anything.

>it would be easier (and less boring) if you just watch the trailers.
the trailers are designed to sell you on the movie. i don't understand what mental model you're operating with that such a conflict of interest doesn't make that an obvious non-starter to you.

trailers are entertainment. at best, they're hype engines. they shouldn't be used to figure out if you should go see a movie you're not sure you should see or not.

Yeah, and those shows (Firefly, Fringe) had 'hard sci-fi' in every episode. They never tried to cover their sci-fi core.

Some of the best X-Files episodes had zero sci-fi plot (aside from perhaps offhand mentions about season-wide arcs). For example, I don't recall the infamous inbreeding episode having any hard sci-fi, it was more of a horror plot. Some were all mystery.

>>
>>87397172
Have you never heard the phrase "there's no such thing as negative publicity"?

Bad reviews generate interest just as much as good reviews, because when the general population sees a critic shit-talking a show, they want to see just how bad it really is.

It's how a lot of movies/shows that have no business being remembered at all become cult classics.

I'll edit that.

Star Trek Discovery certainly never makes a convincing case for its existence.

It (The Orville) exists so that creator star Seth MacFarlane can do elaborate "Star Trek" JOKES, which NO ONE but critics have issues with.

No one should care what TV critics think, because TV critics are pissed off writers who never succeeded in profiting on their own creations. TV critics = failed screenplay writers

well either they would either lay eggs or be mammals.
>>
>>87397358
again you're talking about shitty critics who are more like shock jocks than anything else. most reviews of movies aren't that bombastic. you just remember salient reviews because those are more memorable.

i can't even imagine what additional lengths you're going to ask me to go to in order to show that there are plenty of movie reviews out there that just aren't very vitriolic or extreme. do us all a favor and find a reviewer, then pick like 5-10 random reviews from their career. and a word of caution: search engines will float to the top any page that has lots of other pages linking to it. the thinking is that any page others link to is authoritative about *something*, but in this case you would inadvertently be seeing the most controversial reviews of any given reviewer - the ones that everyone else thought was so "out there" that they wanted to write about it.

ffs galaxy quest already did a star trek spoof and pulled it off perfectly. I can't wait for the day he's confronted by his own obsolescence and drinks himself to death

Nobody hates anything when it's cult and they feel like they are part of a secret club. But then it gets popular and they start screaming "sellout!" and you know the rest. I chalk it up to echoes of the cognitive dissonance between the ideal of individualism and the whole Chosen One hero myth on one hand, and the continuously reinforced RL experience of not being special in any way, shape, or form.

There is such a thing as bad publicity, especially if critic just reassures you that you were right to expect garbage.

There is publicity that is ostensibly bad but actually good, if someone pans you product but makes themselves seem like retards/fundies/prudes/SJW/whatever you might get interested to see what triggers them so much. But not if it's just plain garbage.

That situation is anecdotal, personal to you. The idea of 'no such thing as bad publicity' works on a wider scale. A critic reinforcing your personal opinion may, at the same time, be going against someone else's opinion.
The only time the idea is incorrect is when everyone shares the same opinion. How often is that?

To be fair, even if you strip away all the Social Juicy stuff from the new Trek, it does look like absolutely dogshit. You can't really complain, Trek has always, ALWAYS done the pushing new ground with the racial/ethnic makeup of casting... You can't complain ABOUT THAT.

But wowee do we not need to complain about that. There's plenty.

i don't mind diversity in tv/film. if the character is written/acted well idgaf. i get annoyed when the producers market how diverse it is and then make all the bad guys white men. not very subtle, you cunts.

It's not "wrong", but it is kind of silly watching something in order to spite a person who will never know or care instead of just watching something you enjoy.

I think he's being really clever, when Discovery airs and it's actually worse people will look at this show and praise it in comparison.

I used to watch all his shows every week so I would often spot not only reused jokes but themes. like something was on his mind that week and he would put it in all of his shit. When he was feeling generous he would reuse the season 3 plot of family guy for Cleveland show

Wow, that burn. I get not liking the show but i s there any reason to be such a bitch? I notice a lot of "critics" tend to do this.

they do it because insults and being a bitch entertains some people like people who watch american idol for simon cowell and gordon fans and reality show fans.

critics job is not to give guidance. their job is to entertain.
