How bad were the 9 audios with Briggs? Worth a listen if I pirate? Will the upcoming 10 and 11 audios be worse?
>>
>>87393321
IIRC they weren't that bad, although Briggs' interpretation of 9 is what it is.

Ha, why'd you mark this post with your 4chan pass?

>Prologue: The Club of the Forgotten Ones
Fun smorgasbord of “forgotten ones”, obscure characters not well known outside places like /who/. Very glad to see dear Jenna Coleman’s Beryl here, as well as silly old Clive.

>DOCTOR WHO AND THE MILD IRRITATION OF THE SLITHEEN: A CANON STORY
As Slitheen-y a Slitheen story with 1 could be.

>Smith and Jones
I've already talked to McGanon about all the ways I enjoyed this one, but basically I like how its clearly written with love and in loving detail, I like the idea of a post-Time War Doctor companion meeting a pre-Time War Doctor and actually thinking on what that meant, and I thought the memory issue was handled well.

>>87393321
They are truly terrible. The stories themselves are just regularly mediocre, though they undermine a lot of what made 9's early stories work. But the performance is not a minor thing, it's astonishingly bad and to be honest I find it in extremely poor taste.
>>
>>87393321
>How bad were the 9 audios with Briggs? Worth a listen if I pirate?
Pretty decent, I'd say go for it.
We don't know anything about the 10/11 audios.
>>
>>87393360
>The stories themselves are just regularly mediocre, though they undermine a lot of what made 9's early stories work.
Retail Therapy is perfect in style for the RTD era.
>>
>>87393360
>Ha, why'd you mark this post with your 4chan pass?
For visual effect
>>

Take you long to get 'books' in the tripcode? I spent a while trying to get something more like "Cloister" but settled for the lazy "CLSTR" in the end.

Also, keen to read your thoughts on the stories as well when you post them.
>>
>>87393461
damn i never noticed the clstr was meant to be cloister in your trip. i read it more as "cluster" and never got it. cloister makes more sense.
>>
>>87393461
>Take you long to get 'books' in the tripcode?
Actually, not at all. Tripcode Explorer made it a quick and easy process.
>>
>>87393523
Thanks Tripcode Explorer™!
>>
>>87393742
B-but there's already a trip called Rob
>>
>>87393751
I know, I just typed my name in. the code came out differently to what it said in tripexplorer though...
>>
I want to drop the university to become full-time screenwriter. What do you think?
>>
>>87393771
>I just typed my name in
MODS MODS DOX DOX
actually that makes me wonder what trips actual names are
trips around,, whats your name
>>
>>87393795
It certainly isn't "Neo", I'll tell you that much.

>>87393786
I wouldn't make that decision hastily. For a field like screenwriting, networking is hugely important, and university is one of the best pathways to making important connections in that way (I'm assuming you're in university for something relating to screenwriting - if you're not, have you considered switching degrees/majors?). That's not even mentioning actual skill acquisitions, resources, advice, etc. Screenwriting is also a risky business to get into, even with good contacts. No matter what you do, I'd recommend having a back-up plan too. Preparedness and success are close friends!
>>
>>87393873
Use this to test tripcodes in future rather than wasting a post on it: http://desktopthread.com/tripcode.php

If something's going wrong, check
- Was there a typo?
- Did you put the wrong number of hashes #?
>>
>>87393903
Turns out it contained a japanese character, and so wouldn't work properly when copied :P
>>
>>87393786
"Full-time" implies you're regularly getting paid, and you can't just magic that up in one go.
>>
>>87393140
I wanted a Doctor Who/Blake's 7 crossover but not like this.
>>
>>87393786
writing isn't like programming. like neo says, its a showbiz, it needs networking. college/uni is one of the best places to get that.
>>
>Doctor Who and the Mild Irritation of the Slitheen

I wished this was longer and more elaborate, because the concept of it and the jokes were really enjoyable. My absolute favourite line of the whole thing came not from the (very funny) Slitheen characters, but from the Doctor when he responded to Susan saying there was something not right about them. The perfect gag for that situation.
Also in general, the dialogue style for the Doctor and Susan clearly had attention paid to making it feel like the TV stories. I'm always impressed when people capture the 'voice' of 60s Who characters, rather than trying to do a modernised version of them.

I might add the author credits for Volume 1 to its wiki page as well, it could be fun to see what the stats were last year.
>>
>>87394698
im pleased it spread out to be more of a community thing, loads of people writing very short fics, but also newcomers like neo writing tonnes. i still dont like the twitter author advertising thing in there (pretentious much) but for the most part it was a very successful team effort
i didnt write any myself cause im not wired that way, but enjoyed reading them
also i wasnt sure how to order the first couple on that list since the amount of pages vs amount of stories dont line up all the time. the top 3 are the same 3 people either way so i didnt think it mattered though.

Newcomer to Shit Trips sure, but I've been around /who/ (admittedly on-and-off rather than consistently) a lot longer than I've been tripping here. I have a lovely toy Dalek next to me I got from Cloister a few Christmases ago, an anon or two would have one from me as well, I remember when S8 got leaked, I remember filling out the e-mail IP complaint thing when you-know-who's got found out, etc etc.

There is one line I fucking despise more than anything else and I don't know why.

In Utopia when Yana is remembering all the Time Lord shit the Doctor and co. say, there's that repeated/echoing line where Jack says "REGENERATION... REGENERATION... REGENERATION" and it pisses me off so much. I don't even know why, but it just does. It's probably the obnoxious way he says it.

Leisure Hive is ok, Meglos is a laugh, Full Circle is ok, State of Decay suffers a bit but if it was redone it'd be fucking awesome, Warriors' Gate is a bit shit with a cool idea, Keeper of Traken is comfy as fuck and Logopolis is boring - 6/10 seem fair?

When I was younger and very ill, I always used to watch Keeper of Traken to help me rest/sleep. Not because it was a shit episode IMO, but it was inoffensive to the ears
>>
>>87399122
The Beeb were ambivalent apparently but Chris Boucher and the director of "Star One" were strongly against it, which is a shame because it'd have been fucking awesome.

It doesn't really matter anyway because they're set in the same universe anyway.

>>87398608
Worthy attempt to move the series in a new direction after the stagnation of the Williams years. The first couple of stories suffer from being kind of suspended between the two different approaches, but everything after that is really good. Love Warriors' Gate and Logopolis.

Ultimate Adventure is a big, rompy musical, enjoyable in a "so ridiculous it's good" kind of way.
Seven Keys to Doomsday I don't remember much about, it was just your average quest plot.
Curse of the Daleks is the best of the three. Few actual Daleks, very atmospheric.

>McGanon, why do you like Sam?
I know this post is from last night, but I read through every thread and get caught up each morning, so anyway: I just really like her character, and I'd easily defend her because I often see people making her out to be something she's not. Like, she gets criticism for being this "ultra-perfect, do-gooder" but A) she travels with the Doctor because she wants to help people, which is exactly the sort of thing the Doctor wants to do himself, and B) she's only such a goody-two-shoes because of timestream hijinks by Faction Paradox. She was literally engineered by them to be the perfect companion for the Doctor, and... for all they have their rough patches, it does rather show. She is good for him, and they support each other well, and god knows she provides the care that Eight so desperately needs at times. Sometimes, she's the one looking after him rather than the other way around. Her initial squeaky-clean, never-harm-a-soul attitude is pretty quickly fucked up by the very fact that she ends up killing someone, and the internal struggle that then accompanies that. Then you get criticism for her having a "Martha-style crush on the Doctor," except, it's not that at all. Yeah, she starts out with a childish sort of crush because she's young, Eight's hot and who the fuck wouldn't want to kiss him? But anyone who's read the books should know that it progresses beyond that for her. She grows up, she gets over that immature attraction, and it transforms into a deep, mutual love instead. "They obviously adore each other, but there's nothing going on between them." I don't know, I just think she's a wonderful character and she gets so much development as the books progress, and I really feel as though those that hate her haven't really paid much attention to the reality of her at all. I could go on, but tfw no space.

Also, speaking of EDAs, I can't fucking believe this. I already said I was plagiarised 19 years in advance in The Janus Conjunction, which had the Doctor taking Sam on a picnic just like in my shit trips story, but I started reading the next book, Beltempest, last night and where does the story start for them? On a beach. Inside the TARDIS. Just like my shit trips story. I hadn't read these books - and I knew nothing at all about them - back when I started writing that shit trips entry, so I feel like the universe is playing some sort of joke on me right now.

>>87401405
>An all too common thing with companions.
Yup, and worst part is, Sam's already an obscure as fuck companion, given that she only exists in the books, but even those that do know about her usually hate her for reasons that... shouldn't be reasons at all, if they actually fucking read the stories she's in. She's one of my absolute favourite companions, so it sucks that so many don't seem to understand or care for her.

a good setup story, the continuity story setup and the adult allusions of freetime activities creates an expectation of adult themes, lighthearted themes, but most of all of deep lore, which I think helps differentiate the collection to come from a normal short trip. 9/10

>Slitheen
full disclosure: I hate the slitheen. Full disclosure: I love the first doctor and susan era. Its the second most comfy tardis team. So wnat wins out? The spot on comfiness of the characterization is brilliant, the fart jokes use bigger words to make it seem more intelligent than RTD's level of faire, and at the end of the day it's a fine character study. Bothered by the lack of ending though. It means I now want another slitheen story. Sigh. Congrats, I'm giving a passing grade to the slitheen. I still hate the slitheen. 7.5\10

>smith and jones
In which the lore joke brought a smile to my face. Nice job mcgannon. That said,it drags a bit until the two of them are together and while the chemistry is fine and strong, I would have loved to have bit into something a bit jucier(Company Of Friends-Benny's Story did similar beats with 8, but it had a threat which led to some nice character moments). None of which is a dealbreaker when you clearly have the voice of the characters down 8/10

just had my day very much ruined, so in an effort to forget all my problems, time to read more of the EDAs! Oh, I forgot to mention, but I'm really enjoying Beltempest so far - Jim Mortimore seems to have a bit of a different way of writing Eight, focusing a lot on his physicality and bounciness than most other authors. It's cute, though, and it makes all of the Doctor-focused chapters so much fun to read.

>>87401870
Oh, I never thought of it like that!

>>87402541
I appreciate the feedback immensely, anon! I wanted to write a bit more than I did, and come up with some better ideas, but... if you'll allow me to defend myself, and put into better context why the story was the way it turned out, it was very much an "eleventh hour" (the saying, not the episode) sort of thing, with Immigrant asking me to write it very shortly before the final deadline for the anthology. So, I did, and I wrote it all in one go, in the early hours of the morning, with no sleep. I do agree with you in that it's lacking something more to the story, since there's no real sort of action in it all, but given the circumstances, I chose to focus on the chemistry of the two instead. As much as I wish the whole thing could've been something more, I'm glad that I at least managed to nail down the characterisation. Thank you, though. I'll keep this all in mind for any future stories I write.

Haha, I did that same thing in shit trips 1. I happened to be on /who/ when submissions started so I jotted up a quick 7th doctor story to challenge myself since I honestly don't like 7. I thought to myself "The Seventh Doctor. Planner Extrordinaire and Master Manipulator. What if he was the first one to know and realize there was a time war. What if he knew what could happen or had the vision to know how to stop it?" So I wrote this short story at 10 am on my phone in a car ride to orlando at 10 or 11 at night, and tried to craft it around the idea of the seventh doctor already having the solution to the time war. I won't spoil it, but it seemed clever at the time to my sleep deprived brain. The struggle ended up being internal for the 7th. What was the cost of his plans? I think thats always been the most relateable part of 7 for me.so I only did one draft and passed it in much like yours. Looking back, I'm quite attached to the one draft story, but i didnt do that at all for st2. Much more thinking this time. Its a proud thing to look back at an unfiltered idea that you can just throw out and say "hey! Look what I can do on the raw!" On that, Bravo.

both are very warm, generally kind and patient, and talk at length to other anons if anons are having personal issues. sometimes it spams(sorry, 'fills') up nearly entire threads. they dont seem to have much if any actual DW stuff in common, but both say they love /who/ and definitely act like it.
actual cloister doesnt talk DW much but does do community shit now and again. old timer. staple of the general.
nu cloister talks DW tonnes, some would say too much, he splurges out essays on capaldi and moffat and audios and shit pretty regularly
this has been todays edition of trip news
cloister had a previous trip before but its messy why he stopped using it, dont worry about it. no other trips have multiples really.

This is the first shit trips I've written for, and I initially wasn't going to submit anything because I wasn't sure what to go with. Both my stories were sort of off the cuff like with your 7th Doctor story, but... I expect for ST3, I'll probably spend a bit longer thinking about it, now that I'm more comfortable writing Doctor Who stuff in general. But yeah, as you say, it's definitely a nice feeling to be able to look back on previous writing that you managed to pull out of thin air and make something cohesive out of. It's hard enough to do that with plenty of planning involved, much more so when you're just sitting down and making it up as you go along.

Cloister (Wraith/actual Cloister) - in a relationship with a woman called Belle for a long time, loves Doctor Who merchandise, has done christmas exchanges here and stuff like that in the past, the most consistent member of /who/. Nice, easy to talk to. Has been through a lot of shit, but made it out, and is very thankful to /who/.

Neo (neo "Cloister") - says he's been around for ages, but only started tripping this year. Very into Capaldi's TV, and 8s audios, and will write at length about them. Loves to talk. Also nice, although he puts his foot down in a way I don't really see many other trips do. Which isn't a mean thing or anything, he just doesn't put up with certain things. I can't be bothered to bring up specific examples from the archives but it's just a general thing I've noticed, he won't always be super sweet and tolerant of everything if he thinks someone is being insulting or "not earnest". But like actual Cloister, he's very approachable. I've talked to him about his opinions on Clara a lot and he's always very open.

Gallifrey_Immigrant - resident fanfic writer, also organises community projects (Shit Trips). Unlike the Cloisters, he's not purely a /who/ guy, he is also apparently on Reddit and a Reddit Doctor Who Discord where he also talks to other trips. He is controversial for some of his decisions with Shit Trips, but generally liked, although there are a few anons that seem to have it out for him. He avoids conflict though, which makes some of those dramas bigger. What's the better way to deal with it? I don't know. His fics are interesting and he clearly likes /who/, just not alone. Loves 13.

Edge_Lord_Victorious - attracts controversy because he's flamboyant in some ways. Huge lover of 10, in a sexual way. Fun trip. Also not just a /who/ guy, is on Tumblr and Discords and things, so I hear (I've seen the Tumblr, but not the Discord).

I can go on if you want but it really isn't that interesting, lurk moar and you'll pick it up.

For fun, try to track the relationships between them. It's easier with the ones that only come to /who/, like the Cloisters, but interesting with everyone. Try to work out who gets on with who the most, and the least. It's all a fun mild diversion. They kind of ask for it by trip usage in the first place.
Try asking who their favorite Doctors and stories are to get to know them
Some will open up about themselves personally if you ask. Don't do the thing where you asked neo his "characteristics", it's too direct. Ask them their background or job and stuff like that if you care to. Some will answer.

KOSKAL BABA DOCTOR WHEN?
>>87408184
I still kinda think it was a missed opportunity marketing wise for them to not court Atwell or another name that's better known internationally. I know nothing about jodie, however my worry is that she won't have the star power to draw viewers and keep them around aside from the spectacle and novelty of it all. I understand that unknowns have been cast before and it had virtually no effect upon quality. I think the perception is that DW is on a decline and has been for sometime and in some peoples minds a female doctor will either make or break the show. I think if they really wanted to bring DW into a new era, they should have went whole hog on it and really invested the money in it.

The general idea is the stories get more serious as you go along, and also more alt-universe fics show up at the end (as in fics with the non-TV Doctors).

>>
>>87409417
Wanted to do it twice a week at fairly regular intervals (once a week would be too slow for short stories desu), a mid week slot and a weekend slot seemed like the most sensible. The Sunday slots are scheduled to have a little more content since the interval is a day longer.
