Why are most television channels (even in civilized countries) in standard definition still? I have to switch channels for local programming and back to HD for national programming.

Because crazy as it sounds not everybody, even in first world countries owns a flat screen HDTV. You should see the battle station threads on this board, there are multiple regulars in those who are recognized solely by their CRT televisions and their VHS collections
