it's not in the so bad it's good category, it just works on a meta level to show the artistic and intellectual capabilities of the society it was made for, as well as contemporary society. in this case, the movie isn't an isolated creative work, the audience is as much part of the artistic installation as the film itself.

I really doubt that was the intent of the movie (of course the intent wouldn't matter for what you are saying, in fact it would even make the point better). It was clearly thought as muh satire while keeping Heinlein's hard-on for the military for action purposes, but ironically.

oh yeah, as much as I like verhoeven, the movie dismisses the book very easily and ignores the points it could make about the effect on the two world wars on political philosophy an the development of the subsequent american culture. I can see why verhoeven, a european liberal would do so, but it's still a wasted opportunity in the context of the movie. however, if we expand the context to include the production process and the audience, the entire experience says a lot about american audiences, art circles and their treatment of ideas not favored by said art circles, our understanding of cinema etc. the same could be said about most movies on some level, but verhoeven's background, the state of the industry that funded the movie, it's relative mainstream appeal and the make-up of the audience that is said mainstream makes starship troopers a more unique case than most.
