to clarify my position, I didn't mean to imply that the story is straight up not-magical, but I do believe there is a lot more to the magic in the story than most people believe and it's definitely not related to any gods, which I'm completely sure don't exist in ice and fire.

GRRM spends far too much time obfuscating his magic for it to be literal, "i dont have to explain shit" magic. the shadow assassin in the books is kept vague and brief. Cat remarks that it looks like a shadow but Brienne claims that it was too dark to discern anyone, and that there was simply blood when the light faded back in. there's loads of examples like that that get me thinking, especially since most of his concepts (time travel, resurrection, telepathy) have been given 'sci-fi' treatments in his other works
