WTF, what went so horribly wrong?

I unironically liked this movie.
>>
I liked it
better than Jodorowsky's would have been
>>
>>87372188
>well we had that jodorosky guy lined up, but he was a little too crazy and out there
>hey let's get that david lynch guy, he makes straightforward and easy to understand films!

Seriously though pretty sure he made this coming off Elephant Man, which are both probably his most entry level films besides Blue Velvet.
>>
Lynch says the biggest problem was that he sold out. He didn't have control over the final cut and let too many people make important decisions regarding the script.
>>
>>87372188
I've probably seen this movie a dozen times and I'm still not sure how I feel about it
>>
>>87372216
Jodorowsky's adaptation would've been anything but a Dune movie. I'm glad he never managed to make it.
>>
>>87372188
MASSIVE studio fuckery, crippling the film with critics and bad cuts. Not enough time in the world to do Dune right so had to settle for lame exposition in the good cuts.

Still turned out really great.
>>
Nothing
>>
>>87372188
The book is impossible to make into a movie. That's what went wrong. The movie just skips over 200 pages of development. It's shit.
>>
>>87372343
It manages 99% of the relevant plot in like 2 minutes of shitty narration. The changes that trigger lots of book autists were really great for the film.

Not sure if it's possible to make Dune the book into a film but Lynch made a good film out of sort of the book.
>>
Nothing.
Bookfags need to fuck off and learn what an adaptation is.
>>
>>87372276
It's a beautiful mess. The greatest bad film, and the worst masterpiece. Its existence should not be possible, and yet here it is.
>>
Too intricate of a subject matter to just gloss over like that.

HBO needs to be all over this.
>>
awkward execution, there are some scenes that are straight lifts from the book but despite identical dialogue they just feel cheesy and wrong
>>
Over 5 hours of footage cut out, originally was to be another 8 hour Lynchian tour de force in the vein of S3 of Twin Peaks being initially conceived as an 18 hour film, still was fantastic, and you're a brainlet
>>
Lynch is a hack

What the fuck was his problem?
>>
It's not adaptable. The Bene Gesserit cult stuff, the power of words, what the spice does - it doesn't work on screen. There is no way to do it without missing the point or it being awkward

It'd be so much worse if they ever reached Messiah or beyond. The subtle plotting and insinuation via autistic Bene Gesserit voice modes just can't be done
>>
>>87372402
There's a reason that people are so autistic about the book though. The visual effects of the Lynch film were great, but if you read the book you'll realize why there is such great difficulty in attempting a film adaptation. A GoT production level HBO series might make it possible but that's the only feasible option I see.
>>
>>87372318
>raping Frank Herbert, like this!
>>
>>87372731
I do not like herbert's prose. His books are painful to read for me. I get that there's a lot of depth to it but there's also lots of bullshit I definitely don't want to see in any movie.

Lynch did a really great non-Lynch like job of Dune and it is pretty nice as a standalone thing. It might have soured any future adaptations though, especially cause fuck movie studios.
>>
>>87372824
Dune requires the reader to get through 50 or so extremely dense pages of world development then settles into a smooth and highly addictive page turner, at least in my experience and those I've spoke with about it, so from this angle I can understand where his prose may be an bit off putting. It still stands as one of my absolute all time favorite books though.

Admittedly I did watch the film about 8 years ago for the first time and it was literally right after I read the book so perhaps I was just a bit sour about the differences. I'll rewatch it again soon.
>>
>>87372318
It's useless to try and turn Dune into an easy to follow straightfoward movie, we needed a man with a vision and interpretation, and that man was Jodorowsky
>>
>>87373350
There's also a load of release fuckery with like 3 cuts and an alan smithee. I don't know which is the best, not familiar enough with it.
Seriously though:

>>87372581
He's right you know, Lynch is a hack who delves too much into the blank canvas meme
>>
>>87373673
Bravo for what? You think I was putting an act for you motherfucker? Get your wimpy ass out of here punk, there ain't no need for the likes of you in this website you shitter
>>
>>87372455
So.... Dune plus porno shots every episode.....
>>
>>87373842
S-exposition works. It's bad but at least it's still entertaining.
>>
Dune cannot movie. Niggas need to stop trying.
>>
>>87373903
No. It destroys any beauty or dignity a show has. It is simply minded vulgarity that exists to draw in the dimwits.
>>
sci-fi is for manchildren
>>
>>87374064
I said it's bad, all blatant exposition is bad. At least with tits you get the bonus tits to go along with it. There's already no dignity or beauty if you need exposition.
>>
>>87373903
you have no clue about secret ways of bene gesserit, have you, anon?
>>
>>87374118
Any interests you have is for manchildren, HA, checkmate
