Does anyone on /tv/ actually participate in the film industry?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Or are we like /lit/, a coterie of passive observers, forever condemned to meme, shitpost, and circlejerk over a non-participatory medium from a distance in perpetuity?
>>
>>87356667
plenty of people on /lit/ have published work

guess you're not one of them though
>>
>>87356667
I am a recent grad, working as an independent film producer

I've done VFX, Animation as well as Producing on a ton of films and television.

Ask me anything.
>>
>>87356725
Literally no one on /lit/ has published anything of note (Amazon self publishing doesn't count).
>>
di some commercials for local companies after graduating

now i work for a large ad company.

my dream of making my movie is quickly fading, but oh well.
>>
I'm an aspiring actor but I live in a terrible place for it and don't come from that kind of background so I have a long road ahead.

For now I'm starting acting classes and seeing where that goes.

I used to sell blow to a couple of people in the industry when they would spend time in the South Florida area before I got arrested. I also was an uncredited extra in Bad Boys 2. Does that count?

Aspiring screenwriter stuck in the middle of the rust belt. Working on putting together a "decent" portfolio with some spec scripts, pilots, etc to shop around with whenever I make the trip to that festering wound of LA.
>>
>>87356725
Nick Land doesn't count.
>>
Nope. Wanted to be when I was a youngling, even studied film production in school. God what a waste that was.

That said I wish I got on the youtube train when it was blooming and I wasn't as lazy as I am now, since that's pretty much what I always wanted to do growing up but I felt forced to try and make shitty "proper" movies instead and it kinda killed my love for making stuff.

Well I still and always have loved editing stuff, that's always been the highlight for me. The filming is boring as fuck.
>>
>>87357050

None really, had no interest in the industry growing up, got a degree in Civil Engineering, just lucked into a 3D gig in animation and my career snowballed from there.

>>
I'm a screenwriter, just not in the US. Not as horrible as it was made out to be tbqh though I'm a big fan of soap operas and Hughes-esque teen romance stuff which helps alot since it's 50% of market.
>>
>>87357663

>producing/acting/can start as a PA

Forget PA work, way too competitive and almost 100% "friend of friend" hires.

People won't even consider you for a junior or associate producer job until you've got 5+ years of industry experience.

As for acting, they're almost always a "x would be perfect" hires, network and go for literally any gigs that will get you mingling with people in the industry.

...what you should be looking at is the fringe, technical/logistical/managerial roles within the industry, the boring ones that no one cares, or even knows about, the ones that employ ugly, ordinary people with zero aspirations but bills to pay, THOSE will be your ticket in.
>>
>>87356667
Closest I've ever done is theatre. I like being on stage, but to seriously pursue an acting career, I'd need to move. And I don't think acting is something I'd really chase. I'd sooner do music or writing.
>>
>>87357899

>Why cant I get a girlfriend?

You lack charm, intelligence, looks or money.
>>
I worked in art direction for The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Transformers until I left Hollywood and the film world completely.
>>
working with team making low-budget CGI. if you see CGI at lets say Sharknado level or bellow that, this is pretty close
>>
Any tips on networking? As an extra, I've just met other extras who don't have much acting experience either. I live in the Atlanta area if that helps.
>>
>>87358647
Best advice is to get started as a PA on indie films. Hang around film schools and look for signs posted up on billboards looking for help. Many of the people you work with will go on to work in the industry.

Most producers dip into their intimate friend / friends of friends network for new projects.
>>
>>87357981
I work consistently in voiceovers and have done a few episodes of tv and some film.

I'm a film critic.

>>
>>87356879
What's the point of asking the question if you're going to back pedal and move goal posts rather than confront the fact that you have no idea of what you're talking about.
Ive worked on production of a few very small indie movies, as well as a steady gig voice acting over seas in the late 90's, as well as being a published author. But I guess none of that counts according to your fat contrarian ass.
>>
>>87359217
Basically you have to move to New York or L.A.
>>
>>87359334
I don't know you, but I'm proud of you, anon. Are you still working ?
>>
>>87356667
yes
>>
>>87358647
>I live in the Atlanta area if that helps.
Just check for casting calls, all the fucking time, and take literally everything you can get. You might even consider shopping for an agent.
There's also a decent theater and film program at georgia state (my baby sister is alumni and was involved in theater production all over the city).
>>
>>87359217
Move to LA or NY. Google "auditions/casting calls." Go to every single one you can. You'll only have maybe 30% available to you and zero big roles but your goal is to build a resume/make a demo reel. Once you have that, send it to every legitimate talent agency you can. Don't fall for scams; legit agencies only make money off of commission. If you have to pay to join, it's a scam. Then once you have an agent, it's a matter of paying your dues and making connections until you get your breakout role.

Above all, don't get discouraged. Filmmaking is not a meritocracy. Insiders give roles to other insiders regardless of talent. It will take you years if not decades to break in.

>>
>>87359080
>What does a PA do?
All the bitch work you can think of. If you've ever worked a job with a "go-for" it's pretty much that. But you also liase with all different aspects of production in the process, so you get to build relationships with people.
>>
>>87359453
>Are you still working ?
Nope, not in the industry anyways. Settled down with a more mundane job. It was always just a flight of fancy and I was lucky enough to know a few people who needed help.
You hit a wall and you have to decide if you want to put the effort for a hyper competitive industry, or focus your energy on other things.
Voice acting is something I'd be really interested in getting back into though.

I'm slowly working my way up to actually making something of actual worth. Till then, toiling in the seedy underground world of poorly edited/lit one minute youtube videos I shoot by myself wherever I can.

Speaking of which, just finished editing this today. I'm actually kinda proud of it, despite everything.

Very prevalent. I would say like a solid 40% of film folk do blow or some other hard fucking drugs. I mostly served their assistants and shit. I don't feel too comfortable naming names but, there's one celeb in particular that when I was told that the shit was for them I couldn't believe it. People used to make threads all the time about her.

I got ratted on and set up by a friend. Ironically enough he is still in prison and I'm on probation since it was my first offense.
