It's actually moderately hard to fuck up smaug as long as you don't change his dialogue at all which they almost did.
The whole scene in its originality is just so well written. Anything about it put to film could usually just make I better. Cumberbatxx420xx did fine with it. Though as was mentioned I wish they just left it as the tense brooding conversation instead of making it a mini action sequence. The scene is so fantastic because it's this giant dragon that has been the woe of all and the thing bilbo's been dreading, and he turns out to be super intelligent and relatively calm, like a cat playing with a mouse
