Why can't series be intense and suspenseful anymore? Currently watching the first season of 24 again and this shit is still intense even though I've seen it five times before. Nowadays it's just "dude it's really slow, but you gotta see the whole series three times to realize how good it is, but it'll be all worth it".

I think because of the success of stuff like Mad Men and The Sopranos, TV creators have decided that long shows must have the structure of novels. I mean, when was the last time an influential "monster-of-the-week" format was used or had the budget for spectacle?
