Am I the only one who was more LYNCHED by the Diane scenes in part 18 than the Carrie ones? I get what was going on there mostly, alternate personas being in tune with their originals, but what the fuck was going on with Cooper and Diane?

I assumed the 430 miles thing was them crossing whatever threshold, but then it seems like the sex scene was the threshold instead. Why was Cooper so stoic in bed but himself in the car? Why was Diane covering his face like that? What the fuck did any of that mean?

I think one of the keys to understanding what happened is that the lodge spirits, Mike included, are not good.

Look at what happened the first time they "helped" Cooper. He ended up locked in a hell dimension for twenty-five years while nearly every single person he cared about was murdered and raped. Including the girl he loved who was the entire reason he agreed to stay inside the lodge. In fact nearly everything in the real world was made worse because Cooper agreed to stay in the lodge. Their deals cannot be trusted.

If you notice during the tea-kettle Philip Jeffries scene Jeffries locks onto the time-period and then grows uncertain. He says "There's someone...." "... did you ask me this?" When he says this Cooper appears confused but Mike nods. Then Jeffries tries to warn Cooper about something and says "Cooper, remember-" but Mike cuts him off and yells "Electricity!" and makes the time jump.

I think Mike was evil from the start, even in the old series, and his story about being purified was just a lie. Everything the lodge spirits did in the old series and in this one was not to help Cooper but to further their own plans which always involve Laura. And sadly, I think Cooper fell for their tricks again.

More or less how I feel. The last scene and ending were quite fantastic, but the episode overall was inconsistent and not very good. I understand some of the things Lynch was doing, but the execution was lacking and it wasn't a great way to end the series.

Another thing to note is that Mr C deliberately made Ray put on the owl ring when he killed him, which delivered Ray into the lodge and to MIKE directly.
It looked like some sort of payment.

MIKE also seems to be the presiding spirit of the "waiting room" part of the black lodge and his motives are left unclear.
He is seen constantly "helping" Cooper, but from the scenes from FWWM it is clear he behaves differently when Cooper is not around.

The only odd part is that he made the Dougie tulpa for Coop, which he didn't really have to do.
But who knows, maybe this Dougie will turn out to be a rapist monster that abuses his family and MIKE collects the garmonbozia for it.

- the lodge space is the real world
- the "real world" is a simulation
- lodge spirits are essentially admins that can alter the "real world" and its parameters and even abuse load/save options and so on
- the "real world" is literally viewed from a screen in the white lodge
- it is possible for a character from the simulation to visit the lodge space, but they can't comprehend how time works there and their own reality being malleable fucks them up
- characters can be altered, overwritten, given a different backstory, transposed wherever or erased easily

3. Coop we want. The dellusional, Limbo Coop. A reality that cannot be real. A reality where Laura is not dead, therefore Twin Peaks couldn't happen. A dimension inside his own mind where he wants Laura to find peace, but it's impossible to achieve. Laura's dead.

The story is not that difficult to understand. Yes, you have a lot of symbolism, but that's to fill the story and make it interesting and fun.
The main story is coop wanting to save Laura, but he can't.

From what I can gather, the worst assumption that you can make about Lynch is that he has a massive purpose or motive with what he's doing.
Most of his work is pretty straight-forward and all the weirdness is genuinely something that he just wants to do, which is why all his arthouse stuff never feels pretentious.

Basically, Lynch is mostly about feeling the moment and getting an emotional reaction from you, he's a master of that, tackling the surreal and inhuman to make the most spiritually human moments and stories.
