There's a line between trying to make smart entertainment and making pretentious trash.

Most entertainment is Kant-ian Disney traditional values stuff. It's done and done and done, so there's at least a strong quality barrier to entry. Rick and Morty is different, so the quality doesn't have to be there. People watch it because it's different.

With season 3, it's become pretty clear that R&M's staff has fooled itself into thinking it was anything more than a novelty.
