>no set design, feels empty and lifeless
>no interesting ideas for storylines and generally bad writing
>relies on gimmicks only instead
>those are unoriginal or just bad, unfortunately ("fuck you, albert", glove, andy and lucy, coordinates, riddles, ...)
>bad acting (Bell, Lynch, Horse, Robertson, Dern, ...)
>dull characters (one-dimensional at best)
>storylines and characters are introduced for no purpose
>everything is supposed to weirdly connect and make sense
>shot in digital in a way that doesn't compensate for the technology's disadvantages (looks bad)
>roadhouse scenes (out of place, badly shot, the songs, the bands, the extras, ...)
>student-tier storytelling/editing (characters are shown walking up complete sets of stairs)
>stretched out needlessly, long takes have no particular effect
>everything above is literally cringe-tier in concept and implementation
>obviously delusional and/or inexperienced fanbase perceiving it as particularly meaningful, complex or "deep"
>can't compare to the original series that doesn't have those problems (coherent/complex and beautiful sets, costumes and make-up/well shot/well acted/well written/magnificent multi-dimensional characters and character relations, music, storylines and gimmicks/creates a unique athmosphere as a result, changing the world of television forever whereas "the return" neither manages to do something established really good nor to invent something new)

I actually remember thoroughly enjoying the movie as a kid. It even encouraged me to buy some F4 comics and I don't really think they were any better - the origin story with an experiment gone wrong, some underground mole guy releasing some kinda godzilla in the middle of New York of all places, what is this shit
Never watched the second movie though (I only heard it's somehow worse). Nor did I rewatch the first one.

Lynch is and always will be a mentally hack who makes non-sense that people overanalyze to extreme levels. The way I see it, this had the desired effect. Many people feel disappointed, but many people are coming up with their own ways of solving the mystery that this was. For the years to come, people will try to analyze this, along with the final dossier and they will have vastly different interpretations, opening up minds.

Also I think people should pay attention to their dreams, those of importance. Those that seem elaborate enough that make you think about them even for one day. One of my dreams back in 2010 made me feel the same way I felt with the ending. I can still remember and describe it without issues.

The last two parts literally explored every possible way it could've been entirely concluded as a show from ret-conning the entire series, to having a big bad boss fight, etc.

Notice how whenever people say "imagine if it ended that way" talking about those scenes and in the same breath talk about how dumb it is. That's the point. The last scene is how it should've ended. Any other way out like most of 17 was leaning towards would've been really fucking stupid and not as memorable.

I honestly didn't mind the ending so much, but there are some many other things wrong with this series.

WIZARD OF OZ, DREAM LOGIC THEORY

Finally got it - it is a Wizard of Oz thingie. The whole season 3 has been dreamed up by Richard - similar to Betty/Diane in Mulholland Drive or Lost Highway - that is the common thread amongst all these works. What is the first thing that everyone says about Dale Cooper: he is too good to be true. And that is correct. He IS too good to be true. He never existed. He was a dream, dreamed up by Richard. Richard is just a middle level FBI Officer, who has built up a story to deal with his failure to close the Laura Palmer case 25 years ago; memories of which have been triggered by meeting this waitress in Texas, Carrie Page (who may be is also in abusive relationship). As Dale Cooper, Richard is a part of a super secret task force fighting literally the Mother of All Evil

Also, if might be that Cooper, Richard and Mr. C represent the super-ego, the ego and the id of Richard.
Cooper- the superego, how Richard wishes to be seen
Mr. C - the id, a creature of pure desire
Richard - the organized, realistic part that mediates between the desires of the id and the super-ego. Notice that Ricard's voice and mannerisms are some where between the other two

And like the Wizard of Oz, all figures in the mythical, dream world have more banal counterparts in the real world.

2/2

Bob: The name that men give to their evil - an entity Richard dreamed up to explain how a father could rape, torture and kill his own daughter. A supreme evil defeated by literally punching it in the face like a damned cartoon (e.g. Superman)
Linda: His secretary with whom he is having an affair. Hence all the motels and the most awkward sex scene since Lost Highway. May be they use aliases like Dale and Diane to keep their affair a secret. She has left him and that is why he imagines an evil doppelganger with conflicting emotions
Annie: Worked in a coffee shop, married Richard. He has blocked her out of this dream for rather obvious reasons - he is cheating on her with Linda. As an aside, notice how all the waitresses in the Double R are way more attractive than you would normally expect.
The Mob Brothers: He is perhaps on the take from them and turns them into caring, nice men in his dream. I mean, since when have mobsters given a damn about the feelings of a showgirl/waitress
The Two Assasins: Most likely work for the Mobster Casino bosses. He imagines them dying
Philip Jeffries: Died investigating a case in Argentina.
Gordon Cole: Just your average FBI deputy director, may be even a little resentful of losing the Director's role to a woman: Denise - reimagined as a transgendered person, may be because she is aggressive and tough talking
Chet Desmond: Possibly a more successful agent, which is why Richard dreams up the exact same scenario like the LP killing in FWWM where Desmond fails to solve the case
Laura Palmer: A drug addled prostitute murdered by her father - hence the arm says 'is it the story of the little girl who lived down the Lane'. Which is why she is reimagined to be purer than driven snow. The "key to all this". That is why when he is trying to save her he vanishes in Episode 17

>>
>>87299901
>>87299932

Bonus

Audrey Horne: She is dead. All scenes with Audrey in season 3 are simply in his dreams. May be he did meet a girl who looked like Audrey when he was investigating her father and she perished in a fire
Janey-E and Dougie Jones: A very average couple Richard met at some time. He is attracted to Janey-E and thinks Dougie is dim and not good enough for her, so he substitutes himself in his dream. He idealizes their average middle class Americana life to the point of parody, which is why the tone, color and lighting in those scenes seems unreal and otherwordly - like Betty/Diane in Mulholland Drive
The Giant and Mike: Dream manifestations of his desire to find answers and erase the past - ominpotent, omniscient entities that are benign and provide answers and closure
Judy's: A roadside diner where Richard and Linda no doubt would have eaten. The Double R is an idealized version of this, with super-attractive models serving coffee and donuts

This also explains all the references to waking up and The Wizard of Oz in episode 17.
"Get up" - Coop to Freddie
"Time to go home" - Coop to Laura
Everyone in a room in episode 17 like the scene where Dorothy wakes up and sees everyone in the Wizard of Oz
Like the Yellow Brick Road, we keep getting shots of roads

Significance of "What year is this?" - Maybe this is old Richard on his death bed reimagning his life, the woman screaming and cut to black may represent a woman screaming as he passes away

Yeah, I think it's people trying to be directors themselves to be honest. People who got something right and expect things to go down a very particular road, or close to it. Those are the most bitter and angry about this ending. Because they thought they were somehow smarter or more capable of understanding things. So they sucked Lynch's cock up until that very moment, and now they're acting as though the entire season was a failure.

It wasn't a cliffhanger, everything made perfect sense to me.

- cooper is a guy named richard and he is schizophrenic
- thinks he is a fbi agent
- all the surreal things are happening in real world, our world just like mulholland
- when Richard (Cooper) asks what year is this, Carrie (Laura) screams cos she understands he went to another town with a crazy man
- think about it, he saw a dead man in Carrie's house and she didnt even bat an eye; cos it wasn't there... he sees and hears things, schizophrenic
- she didnt react to sarah as in "wow that rings a bell", she reacts as in, "what a fucked guy on my doorstep"
- the last scene was a prequel to the whole series
- he does those things and then in the mental asylum thinks about all the series in his head that's what one armed means by is this past or future
- he is just a rich guy who lost his mind
- thats why Linda leaves him, cos he is turning crazy.
- he suffers from multiple personality disorder
- that is why everyone has two sides in the series, tulpas..
- remember, the bad cooper killing richard at the rock? with the wrong coordinates?
- RICHARD
- R I C H A R D
- thats him killing his normal personality, and creating cooper
- maybe the only objective sequence we saw in the whole series 25 years was the ending of the last one, as we did in mulholland drive. But even in that we saw him seeing the dead man and hearing Lelands voice.

* I worked with mental patients and this is a very well done story into the mind of a schizophrenic multiple personality, the whole series is in his mind. Just like the stories they tell.

My belief is that now Cooper (and probably Diane) are now lodge spirits. They can travel over the electrical lines, jump between dimensions, and occupy people like the Giant/bellhop, Mike/Philip Gerard, Bob/Leland did. I think that if Cooper had looked in a mirror he would have seen Richard. His life now is acting like a lodge spirit and getting involved in people's lives the way the Giant did in season one trying to make things right.

I don't really give a shit about the mythology. The reason season 1 and parts of season 2 and FWWM worked so well was the emotional resonance and because you gave a shit about the characters.

Season 3 has a bit of that, but mostly it focuses on the mythology way too much. It being a puzzle kind of took away from it actually giving a shit about the characters it created. Especially true of the newly introduced characters that aren't Dougie.

Episode 8 ruled and it was a really interesting hour of television (and for all its strange Lynchian visuals it was actually pretty clear-cut narratively). But it feels like a standalone thing, not Twin Peaks.

I appreciate some people being way more into the mythology behind it than that, but Twin Peaks charm was always that the mythology was in the background, and the foreground was the examination of a cast of characters. Season 3 ended up being mythology in the foreground, cast of characters in the background.

Friendly reminder that it's been confirmed that Eddie Vedder recorded a song that plays during the Twin Peaks finale. It confirms Agent Cooper never gets his mind back. (Pic is evil Cooper)

Not that guy but

I was in a "rehab facility" with a lot of schizophrenics and this season captured the terror of "immediate realization" very well. It happens when somebody is totally zonked out and retarded and they realize what is actually happening.

I knew this one guy who thought he was at work at a Caterpillar Factory in Illinois. He'd shamble in to the living area and say shit like "we work around this dangerous machinery all day and they won't trust us with knives, how stupid," or "hey can I borrow a dollar for the vending machines, I must have forgot my wallet in my car." I saw him realize that he was locked up in a hospital TWICE and both times he basically just screamed shit like "no, this can't be happening, who are you people," etc.

Laura's scream and her whole situation reminded me of this right away, it was very jarring.
>>
>>87300518
I disagree it was a mistake, it gave us Part 8 which was the realization of arthouse in TV like Lynch said (and I really hope it opens up television for more similar experimentally visual storytelling) and we had a lot of characters to care about. The thing is, he really widened the scope, there were more than twenty concurrent plots at points.
>>
>>87300621
Start rewatching from S1 as soon S3 is out on bluray.

>Saves Laura from being snuffed

>>
>>87300607
I agree that episode 8 was a weird and fascinating episode from a visual standpoint.

Yeah, and did we really need to know the creation of BOB and all that nonsense?

What the fuck happened to Audrey?
What was the point of Ben and his secretary Beverly, and the ringing sound in the hotel?

Also, Bob gets punched to death by a literally who?

And when Cooper came back to, he was flat on his back on the beach in the freezing sand, and it was raining out of a low sky, and the tide was way out.

You had a truckload of this in s1 and s2. In fact Lynch did not really like the original characters very much apart from Coop. This is why they are constantly diverted parodies of an "Invitation to Love" kind of show. Lynch continuously wants to show in all of his films that situations, characters and relationships are all contingent on the dream logic that underpins his movies. Usually the whole universe in which the characters inhabit is in flux or a symbolic manifestation of a deeper psychological conflict. I would argue that even the mythology is really secondary, this is more of Frosts thing, which he likes to delve into as occult Americana. For example in Mulholland Drive where did the blue key emerge from? We don't know and we don't care, it's a plot device to hammer in the dream logic.
>>
>>87300749
Sure is a mystery.

He might've been in the second season for a grand total of 12 seconds, but that anon is right. He's a season 3 character. His arc was half of this season.

My biggest problems with season 3, the bookhouse should have come back in some form, I don't know why they would leave a concept so intertwined with the town itself hanging in the dust.

For trusting MIKE and Jeffries. Coop thought he was linearly going back in time to save Laura. We find out this wasn't the case.

To save Laura, but she didn't need saving. Coop doesn't know Laura is a paranormal entity, and still thinks she's sweet old murdered Laura Palmer.

There was one set of sequences in 18 that seemed to be a chronologically-ordered homage to Lynch's other works. They went from something Blue Velvety, to Wild at Heart's western driving scenes, to Lost Highway's POV road shots, and then the entire ending felt Mulholland-y with the "dream or reality/alternate identities" stuff
>>

He tried to save Laura, but got JUDY'D. The series ends with Cooper back in the lodge coming to terms with his inferiority.

>Coop tried to save her but it's not possible so he's stuck doing the same thing all over again

Yeah, but he's not "stuck." He's Cooper, he's literally a fucking angel. As for it not being possible to save Laura... I don't know. That would be an absolute resolution to everything in the Twin Peaks universe so maybe in the end.
>>
>>87300831
Okay, then why show us that shit in the first place?
>>
>>87301129
>implying this doesnt
>>
>>87301060
But it didn't.
Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway ended on a real sense of closure that makes sense if you think about it. Chick dreamed up a world where she didn't have her ex killed, wakes up and kills self.
Dude dreams up a life where he didn't kill his wife and her lover.
Twin Peaks...Not so much. Also those were just movies with continuous surrealism so I didn't care if they turned out to be a dream. It worked. This was tens of hours of my life in these characters so I won't accept some 'it was all a dream' ending. Makes no fucking sense here.

He had a real bad drinking problem. Being in Emergency Medicine, I can tell you that long-term alcohol abuse does some nasty stuff, internally, and the story is that Nance had gotten into a fist fight one evening after a truly nasty bender. He didn't show any signs of problems after the fight, right away, but went home to sleep it off and never woke up. Intracranial bleeding was suspected.

She wasn't screaming in agony. Sarah was calling for her like a regular parent to get their kid to wake up.
>>
>>87300742
He "saved" her from being killed but she got sucked away by something in the woods as he was taking her back home. She got pulled into another dimension and he followed her there which caused a fucking up of reality, merging him and Diane with two parallel versions of themselves named Richard and Linda. Diane gets taken over by Linda and she leaves who she thinks is Richard. Laura also merged into her parallel as well and has no memory of this and believes she's someone else.

Cooper also had no idea what was gonna happen by crossing the threshold into this other world. He simply thought he could go in and bring her back out but in fact is still trapped in there with her.
