That scene was a nice little interlude and the music was great.

The way I see it, this had the desired effect. Many people feel disappointed, but many people are coming up with their own ways of solving the mystery that this was. For the years to come, people will try to analyze this, along with the final dossier and they will have vastly different interpretations, opening up minds.

Also I think people should pay attention to their dreams, those of importance. Those that seem elaborate enough that make you think about them even for one day. One of my dreams back in 2010 made me feel the same way I felt with the ending. I can still remember and describe it without issues.

The last two parts literally explored every possible way it could've been entirely concluded as a show from ret-conning the entire series, to having a big bad boss fight, etc.

Notice how whenever people say "imagine if it ended that way" talking about those scenes and in the same breath talk about how dumb it is. That's the point. The last scene is how it should've ended. Any other way out like most of 17 was leaning towards would've been really fucking stupid and not as memorable.

WIZARD OF OZ, DREAM LOGIC THEORY

Finally got it - it is a Wizard of Oz thingie. The whole season 3 has been dreamed up by Richard - similar to Betty/Diane in Mulholland Drive or Lost Highway - that is the common thread amongst all these works. What is the first thing that everyone says about Dale Cooper: he is too good to be true. And that is correct. He IS too good to be true. He never existed. He was a dream, dreamed up by Richard. Richard is just a middle level FBI Officer, who has built up a story to deal with his failure to close the Laura Palmer case 25 years ago; memories of which have been triggered by meeting this waitress in Texas, Carrie Page (who may be is also in abusive relationship). As Dale Cooper, Richard is a part of a super secret task force fighting literally the Mother of All Evil

Also, if might be that Cooper, Richard and Mr. C represent the super-ego, the ego and the id of Richard.

Mr. C - the id, a creature of pure desire
Richard - the organized, realistic part that mediates between the desires of the id and the super-ego. Notice that Ricard's voice and mannerisms are some where between the other two

Chet Desmond: Possibly a more successful agent, which is why Richard dreams up the exact same scenario like the LP killing in FWWM where Desmond fails to solve the case
Laura Palmer: A drug addled prostitute murdered by her father - hence the arm says 'is it the story of the little girl who lived down the Lane'. Which is why she is reimagined to be purer than driven snow. The "key to all this". That is why when he is trying to save her he vanishes in Episode 17

My belief is that now Cooper (and probably Diane) are now lodge spirits. I don't really give a shit about the mythology. The reason season 1 and parts of season 2 and FWWM worked so well was the emotional resonance and because you gave a shit about the characters.

Season 3 has a bit of that, but mostly it focuses on the mythology way too much. It being a puzzle kind of took away from it actually giving a shit about the characters it created. Especially true of the newly introduced characters that aren't Dougie.

Longtime fan of David Lynch's other works and Twin Peaks but I am so disappointed in him. He had all the people, budget and time necessary. This is why they are constantly diverted parodies of an "Invitation to Love" kind of show. Lynch continuously wants to show in all of his films that situations, characters and relationships are all contingent on the dream logic that underpins his movies. Usually the whole universe in which the characters inhabit is in flux or a symbolic manifestation of a deeper psychological conflict. I would argue that even the mythology is really secondary, this is more of Frosts thing, which he likes to delve into as occult Americana. There was one set of sequences in 18 that seemed to be a chronologically-ordered homage to Lynch's other works. They went from something Blue Velvety, to Wild at Heart's western driving scenes, to Lost Highway's POV road shots, and then the entire ending felt Mulholland-y with the "dream or reality/alternate identities" stuff
