The film's atmosphere wasn't really that light, though, especially after the kid got kidnapped, and the family left Roy first, then his wife hung up on him while they were on the phone trying to discuss it.

Yes, and they never explain why they took them, but maybe those questions were left unanswered on purpose to unironically make you think. I mean, they did return them, though, so at least we got that.
