Unironically this. Hear me out. The whole movie can be watched as a psychological horror. It felt as if I was watching a nightmare. The flashbacks, like fragmented memories, did a good job at being disorienting as someone who had just suffered a great trauma would experience. The great score from Mica Levi (who scored Under The Skin as well) and the lingering close up shots made me extremely anxious the entire time. I was not expecting to feel freaked out as if I had just watched a horror film at all. Probably the most unsettling film I've seen in a year.

I know found footage generally gets a bad rap, but one of my favorite horror films is a Japanese one called Noroi (The Curse). Whole thing plays like a series unsolved mystery episodes with a single narrative as a backbone. Definitely how found footage should be done.

My favorite horror movies are The Exorcist, Jeepers Creepers, Rosemary's Baby, and The Witch. I do love all the more campy classics (Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Scream, Halloween) and Cabin in the Woods as well.

Based on this, would I like Possession? I hear it's a must-watch, but I also heard that about Babadook, It Follows, and It Comes at Night, all of which were relatively disappointing. Don't get me wrong, they were watchable or perhaps even good, but I'd rather watch something that isn't horror if it isn't beautiful cinema in itself (which in this case refers to its ability to scare the shit out of me through dread rather than flimsy jump scares).

I also really liked Yi's House of the Devil and last year's The Wailing (though the latter isn't what I'm looking for atm).

Also before I forget, I highly recommend Resolution, its like this weird mix of dark comedy and horror tropes. Came out around the same time people were jacking off Cabin In The Woods, which ended up being just obnoxious in its self awareness. Resolution is really much more subtle about it.

I don't watch too many horror films these days but it's one that is a slow-burn tension horror more than jumpscares. It's an independant film so some parts are a little sketchy but it was totally worth sitting through and had me thinking about it for a while afterwards.

If you actually remember the 70s and 80s, the atmospherics feel exactly right. A lot of V A P O R art seems a little off key, but this film is pitch perfect.
