And Argento's stuff, of course. There's plenty of good giallo films.
But horror is the sort of genre where there is always some element of camp, you just gotta live with it.
It Comes at Night is really good

the drab, rainy atmosphere around the film makes me want to visit the PNW

>>87282884
Unironically this. Hear me out. The whole movie can be watched as a psychological horror. It felt as if I was watching a nightmare. The flashbacks, like fragmented memories, did a good job at being disorienting as someone who had just suffered a great trauma would experience. The great score from Mica Levi (who scored Under The Skin as well) and the lingering close up shots made me extremely anxious the entire time. I was not expecting to feel freaked out as if I had just watched a horror film at all. Probably the most unsettling film I've seen in a year.
>>87282654
That's because you're a moron who has no true perception of horror kino and rely on cheap jump scares instead.
Try scream.
Black Swan is a good horror movie

V/H/S is good for what it is. It's not trying to be an Academy award winning film, my man. Anyway, I'm gonna post some serious classics. Life long horror autist. Serious classics only:
>The Innocents
>Halloween
>Scream
>Dracula
>Bride of Frankenstein
>Phantom of the Opera
>The Invisible Man
>The Exorcist
>Texas Chainsaw Massacre
>The Night of the Hunter
>Repulsion
>King Kong (yes, it's horror)
>Psycho
>Nosferatu
>Haxan
>The Haunting
Most of these are well-known, but you'd be surprised at how many people aren't aware. This is just a small fraction of serious classics. I'm of the opinion that The Innocents is amazing and underrated. Go watch it.

The problem with indie movies is that when people choose one as "that good one", those who haven't even seen it jump aboard too.

The dialogue was unintentionally funny, the motive was bad, the characterization was minimal and contrived, the camera work was mostly sloppy, and it was filled to the brim with cliche.

Also some anon recently recommended Burning Moon (1992) in a bleak-core thread. Didnt expect much of it, but was suprised when it turned out really fucking great for a german b-movie shlock. Its more on the gore/slasher side, but has that nihilistic all-hope-is-lost quality to it.

Chainsaw kino incoming.
My favorite horror movies are The Exorcist, Jeepers Creepers, Rosemary's Baby, and The Witch. I do love all the more campy classics (Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Scream, Halloween) and Cabin in the Woods as well.
Based on this, would I like Possession? I hear it's a must-watch, but I also heard that about Babadook, It Follows, and It Comes at Night, all of which were relatively disappointing. Don't get me wrong, they were watchable or perhaps even good, but I'd rather watch something that isn't horror if it isn't beautiful cinema in itself (which in this case refers to its ability to scare the shit out of me through dread rather than flimsy jump scares).
I also really liked Yi's House of the Devil and last year's The Wailing (though the latter isn't what I'm looking for atm).
Thanks in advance. Sorry for the ramble. I'm stoned.
>>87309169
You'll probably like Possession but not as a horror, watch it with another mindset.
>>87309219
I really liked Don't Look Now. I thought it was very creative and well-acted and beautiful to look at. Can I expect something like that from Possession? More of a drama and psychological fascination/thriller?
I'll definitely check it out, though. Cheers, anon.

The one where the cannibals end up bludgeoning and eating the kids. From what I remember they kept the perspective from the camera rolling throughout.
Also before I forget, I highly recommend Resolution, its like this weird mix of dark comedy and horror tropes. Came out around the same time people were jacking off Cabin In The Woods, which ended up being just obnoxious in its self awareness. Resolution is really much more subtle about it.

I don't watch too many horror films these days but it's one that is a slow-burn tension horror more than jumpscares. It's an independant film so some parts are a little sketchy but it was totally worth sitting through and had me thinking about it for a while afterwards.
>>87282983
>Van Helsing
>Bram Stoker's Dracula
You're alright
Am I the only one on this level?
>>87282983
I unironically enjoy Van Helsing a lot.
>>87310608
No, I even watched the latest one. Phantasm 1 is the only/best though.

nice to find people with actual taste here and there

>muh wild west Hills have eyes
>>87310237
this starts promisingly but just falls apart once 'things' start happening. I couldn't take it seriously after the white-painted basement goons were finally shown on screen. I REALLY couldn't take it seriously when Merry showed up as a gigantic guardian angel in terrible costume
>>87309408
>>87310817
Yeah the ending is kind of flubbed, but I can give it a pass because it's low budget and there really was no way any CGI was going to be decent. I was really enjoying it until the last 10 minutes which is why I can ignore that particular part.
>>87310817
I liked it for the fact that it actually showed an occult ritual taking a serious amount of time and effort and not just lighting a few candles and snapping your fuckin fingers.
>>87307284
Beta uprising
>>87296070
the uncut version with the complete rape-of-christ scene
>>87277369
Pic relatedShame the sequels are shite
>>87296781
It's boring torture porn.
>>87306880
I loved the scene where the guy makes the chick suck his cock and after blows his wad down her throat she's all like "ok, now it's my turn" and starts pulling down her dress and he laughs in her face and tells her she's a gross slut he'd never eat out.
>>87310933
funny thing is, it's not only low budget productions that fuck it up like that. Sinister would have been great if they hadn't dug up Brandon Lee to reprise his role as a bloated Crow trying to jumpscare the audience by shoving his poorly done up fat face into the camera.
>>87277369
I still want to see a horror/porn hybrid. But it needs the horror or at least some jumpscares, not just cosplaying as ghosts.
>>87297367
>drive
How do they get to the grocery store?
>>87310608
The first movie is legitimately creepy, but the sequels crank up the campiness. The schluby ice-cream truck driver with a bald ponytail becomes an Ash Williams tier badass. I would definitely reccomend, it was a thoroughly enjoyable ride.

>The dialogue was unintentionally funny, the motive was bad, the characterization was minimal and contrived, the camera work was mostly sloppy, and it was filled to the brim with cliche.
>I don't understand what they were trying to accomplish with this movie
>>87288962
holy fuck I hate these self aware "so bad it's good" tryhard movies
I'm writing one myself. It's about a young wiseguy, assassin, gets betrayed by his people. They whack him, leave his body parts in dumpsters all around the city. Long story short, he is put back together, by science...or maybe it's supernatural. And he gets payback on everyone who fucked him over, including the cunt he was engaged to. She was getting porked by his boss the night the hero was killed.
>>87311808
how about they kill his pupper too? the dog is also brought back to life as a kind of hound of the baskervilles.
name him Bobby Yoga.
>>87311808
Jesus dude that's the most lameshit recycled plot, at least try to be slightly original.
>>87311808
was he loyle to his capo?
>>87311808
That's fedora tier shit, do exactly the oppsite of that.
>>87311808
If it's done tongue in cheek, it could be a pretty entertaining b-movie. No way it plays serious though.

Jesus christ /tv/
>>87311777
me too, it misses the point that the thing that made real movies like this so fascinating is that they were genuine. Doing as a joke has no charm; it's having a guy knowingly bump you with his elbow for 90 minutes.
>>87277369
>>87290306
i feel like scream doesn't belong in this list
i'd add Dead of night from 1945
also while not horror Bunny Lake is missing is a great movie no one mentions. Also Wait until Dark has some extremely tense moments.
While on the subject Southern comfort has one of the tenses scenes ever
too bad modern horror doesn't know how to use jump scares and tries to constantly keep you on your toes, which has the unwanted effect of boring you
>>87296781
a bad version of The Other mixed with some torture porn directed by the lest imaginative person ever
Stagefright
>>87295065
Have you seen trick r treat? Not my favorite horror movie but it is hands down the best Halloween one, perfectly captures the mood and the intertwining stories is so well done. I watch it every year on Halloween or the day before. Comfy as hell in a weird way
>>87313853
This. One of the best slashers.
>>87283359
conjuring 2 is awful, dont watch
>>87314105
i like krampus better
>>87314584
I thought the beginning of this was awful. But once it got moving I couldn't stop watching it.
>>87310608
This movie is wonderfully surreal and spooky.
>>87314584
>>87314649
You disappoint me. Krampus was too much a comedy IMO. like 50/50 horror and family comedy. At that ratio the horror loses its kick and seems goofy. Trick r treat is maybe more like 75/25.
>>87314984

>>87310237
The occultism is Hermetic, not Irish.
>>87310817
I liked it. It was a real turn I wasn't expecting. Merry in the strange armor gave the creature an alien look.

Nowhere remotely near patrician.
>>87288311
Interesting, made me think a bit
>>87277369
The Conjuring :^)
>>87297376
These movies are much funnier when you realize that the actors have all been trying to "make it" for years in LA and still they think have a shot. if you have to accept a role as beaver prey to pay rent it's pretty obvious it's time to leave, yet these idiots never do.
>>87295255
Saw that randomly one night, loved it
>>87315485
Rob Zombie is underrated.
>>87296781
torture porn, boring and pretentious as fuck, with insufferable child actors
>>87311206
My favorite horror film ever. It's going to be at a local theater at the end of the month. I can't fucking wait.
>>87315383
BtbR is fantastic if you're not young or a pleb.
This is a really good rundown of all the things going on in ithttp://www.ckollars.org/beyond-the-black-rainbow.html
If you actually remember the 70s and 80s, the atmospherics feel exactly right. A lot of V A P O R art seems a little off key, but this film is pitch perfect.
A Tale of Two Sisters
Let the Right One In
Session 9
I'm more for atmospheric horror. In that regard, The Witch is one of the better recent examples.
>>87315887
Seemed like it didn't quite know where it was going or what it wanted to be.
Also was about lyfe in da projekt, but a bit more wholesome and sanitary. Like Sesame Street meets Bloody Mary. Felt like a campfire story by the Reverend Jessie Jackson.
Maybe you just have to be a Negro to like it.But then Negros like literally every movie they see.
>>87311808
>>87278840
That movie sucked, did the whole it's a dream jump scare like 5 times
