GRRM said that Dayne (without Dawn) ≈ Barristan the Bold, while Dayne (with Dawn) would beat Barry. IIRC that Jaime believes Barristan would have beaten him in his prime so it follows logically that Dayne beast Jaime.
>>
i'm pretty sure Jaime was one of the best one on one swordsmen, whereas Aragorn was more of a general ranger / hero. Aragorn was a better man but Jaime would beat him in a one on one fight.

Jaime is more interesting though because he develops and changes from a piece of shit to a likeable piece of shit. Aragorn went from a rogue to a king in a predictable fashion.

Because everything they care about is the show being "epic" and "cool". Ned as the main character in season 1 can't be a wuss in sword fighting, he had to be a fucking specialist even rivaling Jaime himself. Same reason why they gave Dayne two swords instead of his signature one which his whole character pretty much revolves around. Same reason why they made the Hound lose to Brienne. Normies latch that shit up so hard it's not even funny.

The swordfighting in the show has never been its strongpoint. There are some good fights here and there (Jorah vs Peaceful Refugee, Bronn vs Vale Knight, Oberyn vs Mountain), but they're generally badly choreographed crap. So I don't think Dayne with just one sword would have looked much better.

False. It's stated in no uncertain terms that while Jaime is a great talent, he's flamboyant in his fighting style. Ned isn't. Ned's a classic 'good guy'. Meaning he goes in for a quick efficient kill. He want's the fight over.

Ned would fucking destroy Jaime. Jaime's only advantage is his youth.
>>
>>87258196
>Ned would fucking destroy Jaime. Jaime's only advantage is his youth.
Jaime is literally the best sworsdman in Westeros. This is stated time and time again in the books, and in both book and show Tyrion is so confident in Jaime's ability that he calls him to be his champion in the trial by combat (instead of The Mountain, who is basically invincible).
>>
Jaime
>excellent swordman regarded as one of the all time best by his contemporaries
>despite this, we literally never see him win a one on one fight
>in the one battle he fights he gets captured
>lots of hype, never really backs it up
vs
Aragorn
>a literal superhuman with a magic sword
>frequently see him defeat enemies
>wins a one on one with a very strong orc, basically a super orc
>survives numerous battles, always outnumbered, always comes out on top
>didnt get his dominant hand chopped off

It literally would not even be close for Aragorn. GRRM is a fucking childish hack
>>
>>87258244

Read the books and see who calls Jaime the best. It's all his family and friends. The people who talk about Ned's prowess are people Ned fought along side OR Ned let live. Jaime has a fanclub after his gold and/or cock. Ned has respect.

where the fuck are you getting this usperhuman guts vibe? Aragorn is maybe 6'2" and he's not a super human. He lives till he's 140 so he's a fit adult for 100 years. He's extremely capable since he has decades of experience surviving in the meanest wildest parts of middle earth and he's had training from peerless elf swordsmen. Strength wise he's only as strong as Boromir or weaker.

>>
>>87258298
Except Jaime slices through Robb's kingsguard, on his own, like they were nothing. The only thing stopping him from killing Robb himself was his sword getting stuck in a guard's neck and subsequently getting jumped by a dozen northmen. Jaime was knighted at the age of 15 and won duels against grown men at 13. It's not about his family fanboying him, he's actually that good.

Again, Tyrion had his life on the line and could have picked virtually anyone to fight for him. He picked Jaime, when he could have easily picked either Clegane brother or even Barristan Selmy. That alone implies that Jaime's skill is real and not just hype, because Tyrion wouldn't be stupid enough to risk not only his own life but also his brother's otherwise.

I don't give a shit if he was a professor, a doctor, or a fucking astronaut, Lord of the Rings are some of the most dullest, boring books I have ever attempted to read. Yeah Bronn even sized up the Mountain and understood that if he tired him out he may win. He just had no reason to take that risk.

>>
>>87260645
No way. Book Bronn stand absoltuely no chance against book Clegane and even show Bronn doesn't stand a chance (if we exclude D&D's stupidity). The Mountain has an enormous reach, is fairly agile and even though he is not a proficient fighter, he can cleave Bronn with just one swing. Oberyn is probably one of the few ones who could beat Gregor and that's mainly because he had 3 things:
1. He is the perfect counter to Clegane by being proficient in a weapon that negates Gregor's massive reach advantage and strength
2. He is one of the absolute best fighters in the world
3. He has prepared for this fight his whole life.

I can't see anyone but Oberyn winning that fight against the Moutain.

Bronn's point iirc was that theoretically, he could avoid the Mountain, tire him out, and win. But it would take just one little slip-up for the Mountain to chop him in half, and Bronn is smart enough to know that in every fight you're going to make at least one mistake.

>3. He has prepared for this fight his whole life.
That's actually a good point about Oberyn. My problem with the scene was how he seemed so perfectly matched with Clegane, but of course he's well prepared, it's probably all he's thought about for a decade.

It is repeatedly stated in the books that the best fighters in Westeros are Jaime, the Hound, the Mountain, and Barristan Selmy. That list doesn't account for Oberyn, but he probably specialized himself to defeat only the Mountain. Brienne is also pretty good in that she's able to avoid getting destroyed by Jaime when his hands are tied together and he has a broken sword.

The show makes Ned able to fight Jaime, says that Bronn would have a chance against the Mountain, and has Brienne defeat the Hound. Implicitly, I suppose Arya could fight the super good fighters since she ties Brienne.

He *is* a mary sue though, that's the whole point. Tolkien deliberately wrote a very black and white story, with Aragorn as basically a superhero who is:

>fluent in multiple languages
>an expert hunter, tracker, and archer
>an expert healer
>a great singer
>a natural leader
>an expert fighter
>really handsome
>will live to the age of 250, he's already 87 in the books/movies and he doesn't look a day over 30

If somebody made a modern story with a character like Aragorn we'd dismiss it as silly fanfiction.

No, he called him that because Smiling Knight was a evil monster cunt, even more so than the murdering, raping Mountain.

Of those only Bronn vs Vardis is even passable. Jorah gets his throat nicked instead of his head cut off for no reason and dont even get me started no the red spinmaster
>>
>>87260966
>Bronn's point iirc was that theoretically
Bronn may have thought so but we all know that the Mountain is extremely agile for his size and on top of that wields his sword with relative ease. In a fight like that, theoretically he can tire the Mountain, but not fast enough considering everything we know about Gregor. Unless he plans to run in circles literally.

>That's actually a good point about Oberyn. My problem with the scene was how he seemed so perfectly matched with Clegane, but of course he's well prepared, it's probably all he's thought about for a decade.

Everything Oberyn did from his sister's death to his own death was getting his hands on the Mountain - how he trained, what weapons he used, the poison itself - everything he did he did to get his hands on the Mountain. Problem was that in the end, when he had everything in his grasp, the adrenaline and the success of it all went way over his head causing him to make the crucial mistake that cost him his life.

>>87261154
>I choose to believe that Brienne was going easy on Arya because that's the only way that scene makes any kind of sense.

What was conveyed is that they both didn't really go all out but Arya's particular fighting style is a good counter to Brienne's knightly fighting style.

In a fight to the death Brienne would have to employ more brawling "dirty" moves but in that case Arya could simply use her higher mobility to escape and kill her later in an assassination-type attack.
In that case I give Arya an edge since she doesn't have to follow regular rules of engagement as her only goal is a kill by any means.

>GRRM has stated that he told D&D the ending. The show and books will end the same way, the difference is how they get there.

GRRM said the exact opposite recently - “the book series and TV adaptation go their separate ways.". Show is the show, don't take it as canon. There are no Night Kings and the Others are not some magical plot device that went rogue.

>>
>>87261376
Which is what makes her good. It takes a lot of speed and skill, as well as some strength, to beat freakish strength. Jaime monologues about this while he's fighting Brienne:

>She is stronger than I am.

>The realization chilled him. Robert had been stronger than him, to be sure. The White Bull Gerold Hightower as well, in his heyday, and Ser Arthur Dayne. Amongst the living, Greatjon Umber was stronger, Strongboar of Crakehall most likely, both Cleganes for a certainty. The Mountain’s strength was like nothing human. It did not matter. With speed and skill, Jaime could beat them all.

Although I think Jaime's ego is getting away from him here though, he could never have beaten Dayne.

That was the official story, but anyone who knew Dayne would have probably guessed that Ned was exaggerating. Anyone else would exaggerate the accomplishment anyway, it's only Ned who's too honorable to say that normally. Ned probably just didn't want Dayne to be remembered as getting shanked so he made up the story of an honorable duel.

The Chronicles Of Amber were ASOIAF before it came to being, since Zelazny influenced Martin tremendously and he was his mentor after all. Having read both, LOTR, while not sounding as interesting as ASOIAF blooming with political intrigues, schemes and what not, for me was much better, because Tolkien excelled at world building, while also knowing how to write! GRRM's prose, albeit not Stephen King tier and serviceable, still has a lot to be improved upon.

Nobody is stupid enough to believe that. Now that I think about it, I'm starting to wonder if Ned's reputation as an honorable man is really that strong. Look at the "official story".

>Ned fucked Dayne's sister when he was already engaged
>Ned and his men overwhelmed and killed Dayne
>Ned claimed sole credit

As I've said in my previous post, The Chronicles Of Amber are ASOIAF before ASOIAF, so you'll definitely dig it. It has 10 books, first five are some of the best fantasy wise, while the latter 5 aren't on the same level, because Zelazny got ill and rushed them in order to finish them on time, but they're still rather good compared to most and worth reading to the very end.

Tolkien is to creative literary genius what Martin is to hack pulp idiocy. They both so far surpass anyone else in their field that they will be remembered 1,000 years from now as a kind of yin and yang of fantasy, a Manichean duality of speculative letters. For every sublime, luminous beauty that Tolkien has gifted the world, Martin has cursed us with a tedious, banal ugliness. It is unfair to compare the two directly on any one point, because Martin is in every way the anti-Tolkien, patently sterile, parasitical, and inferior, but so much so that he becomes a monument in his own right, and counterbalances Tolkien. Could one exist without the other? Tolkien obviously could. But it is only by the contrast that Martin offers that we can truly appreciate the full depths and heights of Tolkien. Our understanding of Tolkien would be incomplete if Martin had never set pen to page. It is through only the abject failure and futility of Martin that we can approach an apprehension of the true scope and scale of Tolkien's hitherto inconceivable greatness. Perhaps this is what Tolkien had in mind when he wrote about the Music of the Ainur. If Tolkien is a subcreator in the image of Eru, truly Martin is like unto Melkor. It is only reflected in the awfulness of the one that we can fully see the goodness of the other.

Ends pretty badly for the Humans.

The Valar didn't want to take responsibility for dealing with the Humans, so they turned to Eru to deal with this Human kingdom.

Eru takes responsibility by sinking an entire continent along with all the Human armies/civilization to the center of the Earth where they slumber until ragnarok and bends the flat Earth such that it becomes round and separates "Heaven" from it. You can still sail to Heaven but only if you know "the way", which only elven ships leaving for the west know.

It's where Frodo leaves for in the boat at the end of the last movie.

It's hard to say for sure. In the movies, orcs are on par with humans, you see lone orcs killing humans. In the books, humans are clearly superior, 1 Gondorian=5 orcs. Uruk-hai have the same numbers as orcs but are as strong as humans, which is what makes them so dangerous.

nah the orcs outnumber the uruk-hai heavily
it's one of the reasons why Saruman was utterly delusional when he considered himself an equal to Mordor

It would just be one of the 9, Dany would turn into a Nazgul. Sauron could go chill in Bravos, wait a year, then come back and congratulate his servant for conquering Westeros for him.

The Silmarillion is much more mythological than LOTR so you have a lot more biblical tier characters.
It starts with the creation myth after all and alludes to the world ending with a final battle that's basically Ragnarok

You want a tall 30-year old with massive tits to play a short teenage disney princess ripoff? Idk how that would work, a girl like pic related would be better.

>nah the orcs outnumber the uruk-hai heavily
I was thinking relative to Rohan. Rohan was traditionally able to fight off regular orcs without too much difficulty, but with the uruk-hai it becomes borderline impossible because there are so many of them and they're about as strong as humans on top of that. IIRC they're implied to be orc-human rapebabies although the movies show them as grown in some sort of magic lab.

Jaime also has a magical sword, too. We don't know how Valyrian steel competes with LOTR magical swords, though.
>>

I never got the impression that orcs were weaker than humans. Do you mean Numenoreans?
>>
>>87273423
I'm going to assume that Valyrian steel is not going to be outperforming the blade forged from the shards of Narsil itself wielded by it's rightful owner

What a fucking hack.
>>
>>87273481
in the books it's a fairly common theme that evil cannot truly create, only make weaker copies
orcs cannot compete with the races blessed by Eru himself
>>
>>87273481
In the books I definitely got the impression that orcs were weaker, especially with the constant repetition about orcs and trolls being just pale copies of elves/men and ents. In the movies though, you're right, orcs hold their own against humans. If you go back and watch Return of the King, it's actually a little frustrating, scene after scene is just the Gondorians getting absolutely overrun by orcs. The guys with armor are next to useless.

The movies do a terrible job of showing the Nazgul making all the Gondorian soldiers panic during battle.
The books spend a ton of time describing the horror the soldiers felt and how desperately they wanted to run and hide thanks to the Nazgul being nearby.
>>
>>87273884
The problem is how do you translate visceral fear with no rational basis to a visual medium? It's relatively easy to do it in a book, just describe how fucking terrified everyone is. But on screen? It's really difficult. I think Jackson did the best he could, with men being visibly terrified of the fellbeasts, something anyone can relate to, and the Nazgul screech literally incapacitating them.
