Everything Oberyn did from his sister's death to his own death was getting his hands on the Mountain - how he trained, what weapons he used, the poison itself - everything he did he did to get his hands on the Mountain. Problem was that in the end, when he had everything in his grasp, the adrenaline and the success of it all went way over his head causing him to make the crucial mistake that cost him his life.

What was conveyed is that they both didn't really go all out but Arya's particular fighting style is a good counter to Brienne's knightly fighting style.

The Chronicles Of Amber were ASOIAF before it came to being, since Zelazny influenced Martin tremendously and he was his mentor after all. Having read both, LOTR, while not sounding as interesting as ASOIAF blooming with political intrigues, schemes and what not, for me was much better, because Tolkien excelled at world building, while also knowing how to write!
