>The other practices of the Jews are sinister and revolting, and have entrenched themselves by their very wickedness. Wretches of the most abandoned kind who had no use for the religion of their fathers took to contributing dues and free-will offerings to swell the Jewish exchequer; and other reasons for their increasing wealth way be found in their stubborn loyalty and ready benevolence towards brother Jews. But the rest of the world they confront with the hatred reserved for enemies. They will not feed or intermarry with gentiles. Though a most lascivious people, the Jews avoid sexual intercourse with women of alien race. Among themselves nothing is barred. They have introduced the practice of circumcision to show that they are different from others. Proselytes to Jewry adopt the same practices, and the very first lesson they learn is to despise the gods, shed all feelings of patriotism, and consider parents, children and brothers as readily expendable. However, the Jews see to it that their numbers increase. It is a deadly sin to kill an unwanted child, note and they think that eternal life is granted to those who die in battle or execution

Depends on the time period. Tiberius was exasperated by the Senate's cowardice and unwillingness to take any responsibility or power.

On the other hand at other times like with the Antonine dynasty they served as a cooperative advisory council, and later in the 3rd century acted with much more overt power as they appointed dozens of Emperors, many of whom came from among their own ranks. Of course most of these had short and bloody reigns, and the end of the 3rd century crisis resulted in the triumph of the equestrian military order with Diocletian and his successors, which pretty much put a final end to the power of the senate.

>Africa means Egypt

Wrong. See pic related. Africa was a senatorial province. Egypt was a unique province because it was controlled by an equestrian appointed by the emperor. Every other province was controlled by a person of senatorial rank either appointed by the emperor or by the senate directly in the case of Africa, Asia and a few others.

>No one gave a fuck about the North African coast

Also wrong. It was one of the most important provinces in the empire for its exorbitant wealth which was important for tax collection and its massive grain supply, which alongside Egypt allowed the city of Rome to become the biggest city in the world by a factor of 10.

>not since Carthago delenda est'd.

Carthage was just one city. The Romans refouned it, and it became one of the most important and largest cities in the empire and one of the main centres for early Christianity.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Carthage

>After the destruction of Punic Carthage in 146 BC, a new city of Carthage (Latin Carthāgō) was built on the same land. By the 3rd century, Carthage developed into one of the largest cities of the Roman Empire, with a population of several hundred thousand. It was the center of the Roman province of Africa, which was a major "breadbasket" of the empire

Your surface level knowledge of Roman history is laughable. Don't cite /his/. Idiots like you are why the board is so shitty.

>>87264589
>these groups have been more or less kicking around in the area for a long time under different names.

Turkic peoples lived 2,000 miles from what is now Turkey in Antiquity.

>You're acting as if turkmen like people haven't always lived in old persian empire

There were barbarian tribes and stuff, sure. The Isaurians are a good example of the kind of group you're talking about. They were the exception though, not the rule. Anatolia was wealthy as fuck. Spain was a backwards shitheap by comparison away from Baetica on the southern coast.
>>
>>87264744

True but if I had to choose a place for my bloodline to grow, it would be in a place that went early empire and did fairly well for itself, and survived Muslim influence. And it survived fascism/communism. I'm swiss in origin but I think living in a place that has nice beaches would be a nice boon.

Wealth wasn't really the factor on my mind. I had family was considered nobility or married into it at one point but that shit is pretty ephemeral by time you get to modern age so, what is wealth worth to the dying man.

There is something that has always puzzled me. How come Greece and Italy was supposedly so great in ancient times, but have been so useless and pointless for like 1500 years? I cant imagine, for example, UK ever being so pointless/useless or even USA centuries from now. >>
>>87265424

People are only as powerful as circumstance allows. Our growth in the USA only came because everyone else save ruskies got flattened. The people that didn't or were rebuilding during the war grew to influence after the war.

So greece's influence after a certain point was gobbled up by Romans which largely led to Byzantium and Roman Empire's various cultural feats.

Once those fell, you largely had Turks killing Greeks and trying to subjugate them and then you had Hapsburg influence out of Vienna fucking over everyone post middle ages/early enlightenment.

It's not that power stopped happening, it's that the game changed and power changed. So it went from power of kingdom or empire largely into alliances and world wars. Think of it like energy and it changing form instead of destroying it completely.

Those influences checked by trade being cut off by Ottoman's led to Age of Exploration, and conquest. Those places largely gaining influence because of time/distance and old world powers fighting it out and destroying their own strength.

and to be honest, American imperialism was more about removing other people's imperialism. We wanted old empires to give up their empires. And then corporations who now have power post-industrial age, don't seek territorial borders changing but people inside it to make their wealth grow.

Influence and power are still happening but it also changed at least twice. You see where i'm going? Economics of war and how to achieve it changed. That is where the power and influence went.

I include byzantium part of the story as well in that. Even the local govenors helped kill off christians in the east. How else did muslims push them out of anatolia.

Rome converting to christianity killed them.

The greek slaves were actually treated about as close to people as you got and they wielded a good amount of power, its a sex slave that you didn't want to be. Most of the time.

>I would argue The Emperor converting in the 400s ultimately led to downfall of the empire.

The emperor Constantine converted in the 4th century AD, not the 400s. The Empire was in a much better place in 350 AD when it was Christian than in 250 AD when it was pagan. Religion had nothing to do with it.

Edward Gibbon, who had the same idea that you have that "Christianity is degenerate and it made Rome turn effeminate", was proven wrong like 200 years ago.

>I include byzantium part of the story as well in that

Byzantium managed to bounce back multiple times. It went from being Constantinople and a few cities on the Greek coasts in the early 7th century to controlling from Italy to Antioch in the 11th century.

>How else did muslims push them out of anatolia.

Civil wars. Civil wars is what killed the Roman Empire all the way from the 3rd century down to the 15th. While barbarian tribes were crossing the Rhine to fuck the empire's shit up the emperor was fighting a usurper in Gaul.

>Rome converting to christianity killed them.

Actually it would be easy to argue that Christianity was a unifying force.

>>87266215
>They were BTFO by the Based Germanic tribes and literally never recovered

The Germanic barbarians literally won only one battle against the Romans in their final years. The Romans destroyed their own army in a bunch of civil wars between 408-430 AD.
>>
>>87266108
The problem isn't Christianity but the fact that everyone else was getting their shit together. Pagan Byzantium wouldn't have fared any differently from Christian Byzantium other than the fact that Iconoclasm wouldn't exist and Russia wouldn't be Orthodox today.
>How else did muslims push them out of anatolia.
Are you reffering to Manzikert? The Byzantine side in the battle was a chaotic clusterfuck which was why the Seljuks got the upper hand.

Based Cicero treating his subordinates kindly. I dont I have ever like a character so much after initially finding him annoying. He literally did nothing wrong. Also, that "A Woman's role has always suited you best" echoes through eternity as the most Based insult on a TV show ever. Its so visceral and so accurate on-point that it drove Mark Antony insane.

nah Greek slaves were notoriously treated worse than Roman slaves, especially after the servile wars

Explain away the Schism and internal politics if Christianity was ultimately a unifying force. Which you could also use Albigensian crusade/internal politics to show that it was mostly cover for what they wanted to do anyway. How can you say it's unifying when it led to conflicts that largely helped weaken their influence in the world. Venetians sacking Constantinople. I can think of at least three other examples sprinkled throughout where christianity wasn't a unifying force. The entire history of the UK post norman conquests. 'Unifying force' my ass.

You're also not mentioning the many plagues that happened between 7th to 11th centuries which helped that greatly and had little to do with military prowess or strength. Half of the continent died.

Also subscribing to christianity led to them fighting amongst themselves more than they probably would have so you can turn unifying force argument on it's head. Teutons versus Pols. Happened as religious cover for their greedy actions.

Inside and outside, their influence worsened problems in name of politically motivated greed in face of hypocrisy and was a negative detriment to european culture as a whole. We know that better than anyone. The italian renaissance you mentioned above happened in spite of Christianity, not because of it.

Having many local cultures being subsumed into one larger set of monolithic beliefs that divested many cultural subsets of existence also led to a weakening and centralization of future nation states to their detriment that almost allowed muslims to take over spain and ottomans coming up through austria.

European wars of religion happened because of christianity and schism, inter-confessional fighting and weakening of previous roma sub-states. France's protestant vs catholic war? You can trace all of their problems back to Rome's conversion. Which then went on to infect all member states in their influence.

No, it absolutely cannot, you fucking retard. The Roman Kingdom and Roman Empire are distinct periods of Roman history, and the distinction between emperor and king is one of the defining features of the thousand years after the collapse of western Rome.

Italy has absolutely not been useless. The Greek world has shrunk considerably and Greece wasn't on the map for several hundred years during the early modern era. They've been permanently crippled by the loss of Anatolia, which was the cultural centre of Greeks.
