Okay, so I never saw Game of Thrones and I figured I'd give it a try for Aidan Gillen.

There's a massive cast of characters. And the show, like the books, starts slow because they have to introduce like 15 or something main players. Also there's a couple of databases online that will help you keep track of who everyone is, their story, and their basic arc.
I always tell people to watch 3 episodes before they really make a call if they like it or not because honestly, episode 1 will not sell 99% of people. But by episode 3 nearly everyone gets into it.
