What would Leone be without Kurosawa?Literally nothing
He's my favorite filmmaker but that's probably true. Colossus of Rhodes is a fun movie with some flair but it's mostly flat and generic, there's a reason why most people don't even acknowledge its existence. His style really blossomed once he realized the power of conceiving scenes around pre-composed music, and that's a development that might not have happened had his producer not forced Morricone on him. But if you look at the first dollar movie the score isn't that memorable, yet his style is already excellent (obviously his studying of Kurosawa's style really pushed him to step up his game), so who knows, he could have grown like many other top-tier filmmakers who didn't have an iconic composer, like JP Melville or Orson Welles. Maybe he would have gone in the same direction with Nino Rota or Riz Ortolani. Similarly, Morricone composed for hundreds of filmmakers yet few of them really transcended their filmmaking through the use of music (and that includes people like Malick). Many spaghetti westerns tried to mimic the formula perfectly without ever reaching the same level. They both complimented perfectly in ways others couldn't replicate, IMO their artistic chemistry is the pinnacle of the medium. He also had other amazing recurring collaborators like Donati and Vincenzoni that his producers pushed on him. He had undeniable talent and filmmaking vision but the end results that are his films were also forged through lucky accidents or production compromises.

Also true, it was a necessary spark that set off his style, yet one only needs to compare FOFDM to Sanjuro to realize the student quickly surpassed the master when doing his own thing. This can't be said for all the other spaghetti western filmmakers who tried to go after Leone, none surpassed him, none could conceive something on the level of OUATITW, even Corbucci at his best was merely on the level of FoD-era Kurosawa-ripoff Leone.
Fun fact: They went to school together. Fate.
