How do you review Citizen Kane? How do you review the film often claimed to be the Greatest Film of All Time? In those emphatic capital letters? What can you say that hasn’t been said already?

I guess you could investigate the merits of that title. But history shows it has earned that title. No other film influenced cinema like Citizen Kane, and it’s easier to see it now in the context of The Best Picture Project than any other film. It’s almost like everything had been building to this. You can see just how much risks Citizen Kane took, and as a result, how much it managed to change. In many ways, it took dramatic films out of their basis in plays, and into the cinematic world.

So that’s out of the question. But what about the technical merits of the film? Is it really that perfect?

And it is. There’s a lot of cross cutting and symmetrical scenes (edited brilliantly by then unknown Robert Wise), all of which coincide with the film’s theme of memory, and how various versions of it fit together like a puzzle, specifically the puzzle of a man. There’s also the film’s then revolutionary cinematography by Gregg Toland, which used many deep focus shots, which can communicate the distance between characters, managed to change how we actually LOOKED at films, and how many clues a simple shot managed to clue us in on what was really happening (take a look at the scene where Kane walks by the two mirrors, and we see multiple Kanes walking towards the end).

So yeah, once again, that’s already been done. But what about whether or not it has retained its value as just entertainment? Can one watch Citizen Kane and not be bored?

And provided you have the attention span, it’s anything but boring. There’s always something happening, and the way Citizen Kane tells its story makes it happen. But it’s also the story of Citizen Kane that can’t bore you. You want to learn more about Kane, and even if you have heard about the film’s ending, it isn’t a twist, but a tragic revelation. In fact, even having seen the film before, the revelation just makes everything about the film that much more tragic. The acting is cinematic and emotional, which is amazing considering nearly every actor in the film came from Welles’ Mercury Theater company.

And now that’s out of the question. And you don’t know what to write about, because you’ve looked at nearly every angle to approach the film, and it’s already been done.

But then you realize something. As you’ve been deciding on how to write the review, it wrote itself. You don’t even have to write a review. The film writes it for you. Citizen Kane’s status speaks for itself. It’s a magnificent film that revolutionized how films were made. It’s the grand sum total of all that came before it, and much that would come after it. It is completely deserving of both its title, and my love.

I'm sorry. I know it's a cliché, but watching this film along with it's contemporary releases, Citizen Kane (1941) really DOES stick out unlike anything else at the time. The unique performances, lighting/shadows, claustrophobic sets, experimental filming, not to mention the narrative structure, blah, blah blah.... you all know this. Others can tell you a lot more about that.


The film has received so much praise that there is almost a backlash to it. I think people seeking it out as "the greatest movie ever produced" expecting to have their mind blown from the experience, might not necessary feel so when randomly picking hyped films. What one's got to realize is that it's the collective of ideas, with impressions high and low coming at all angles, and almost rebellious execution in regards to the Hollywood standard, which gives Orson Welles' creation it's timelessness.
