I'm planning on going to my local Doctor Who convention in March, and it's fucking crazy that they charge so much for photos. Peter Davison, Pearl Mackie, and Michelle Gomez are gonna be there (probably more too but the rest of the guest list isn't finalized yet), and it's forty bucks for one with Peter and sixty for Michelle and Pearl. I suppose it's just the con trying to make as much money but it's still ridiculous

Jesus. I went to the same convention in either 2014, the first year they were doing it, and Sylvester, Colin, and a bunch of companions were there (no nuWho people though, not that I'm complaining), and it was only 20 bucks American for a pic with Sylvester. I was talking to a guy there while in line for a panel, and he was saying that he paid 200 dollars for a photo with Tennant and Billie at the Philadelphia comic con

They don't usually decide their own prices, the convention does. Smith was really cool, it was nice of him to doodle in my sketchbook. ...Techincally counted as a second signature because he signed that too, kek. The actors seem to not agree with the rules, you're only supposed to get one picture but if you let them take the selfies they'll do like... 20 for you.

>>
>>87233073
Conventions can be fun, but man if they aren't a black hole of greed.

And, typically, it is the venues and hotels behind it. They won't just want to milk every cent the convention makes, but also charge people an arm and a leg for a place to stay and to park their cars.
>>
>>87232401
>That's totally false, though.
20 is the season where JNT just went "bringing back old monsters is inherently interesting" for most of it, and the writers just went with that as the remit. The only stories that really break that mold and do something interesting are Snakedance (which carries on the surreal pseudo-Buddhist themes from Kinda), Mawdryn and Enlightenment. Then in 21 Warriors is doing the Cold War thing, although it doesn't quite work out, Planet of Fire has a few interesting ideas about religious fanaticism, and Androzani of course is smart and political because it's Holmes. But throughout that there's a bunch like Arc of Infinity where they thought "Omega comes back in Amsterdam" was enough to base an entire story around without any deeper idea or significance, or Resurrection where it's just the "do I have the right?" thing again with a gun instead of two wires.

>20 is the season where JNT just went "bringing back old monsters is inherently interesting" for most of it, and the writers just went with that as the remit.
Supposedly, but the Black Guardian trilogy focuses on him very little and the Mara and Master had both appeared last season (and at this time the Master was getting at least one mandatory serial per season regardless), so the only real legacy villain was Omega.

>The only stories that really break that mold and do something interesting are Snakedance (which carries on the surreal pseudo-Buddhist themes from Kinda), Mawdryn and Enlightenment.
If half the stories "break the mold" then what claim does it have to being the mold? And Arc of Infinity was trying to be about more than a Cold War parable that would have been cliche 20 years ago. Much like Mawdryn Undead, Enlightenment, and The Five Doctors, Arc gets into the idea of the foolishness of pursuing immortality and it also has the Time Lords wanting to kill the Doctor to prevent Omega from returning, which is kind of a moderately interesting dilemma. Terminus is anti-corporate and was supposed to have a whole Norse mythology angle that didn't really end up having any siginificance. There's also Frontios, about power struggles between a group of the last humans in the universe and has the TARDIS actually get fucking destroyed and The Awakening, which was something about war or history or something I don't really remember tbqh but I seem to recall it had something going on. Plus all the good serials you already mentioned. The ideas didn't didn't always work, but I don't think it's fair at all to say that the Davison era was unambitious most of the time.

How long did it take for you to realize that Purves wasn't pronounced as "pervs"?

>>87235939
Matt had a sizable part in The Crown, which is constant work for him and a lot of exposure. Though I'm sure he wished he had gotten a part in something like Star Wars of Fantastic Beasts (he was probably second choice for Newt Scamander if Redmayne turned it down) he seems to be more of an experimental actor who wants the ability to perform in new plays.

He was promised a bigger role in future Terminator movies but that franchise revival was DOA. Which sucks for him.

He was also in a movie with smirkfu that appears to be on the shelf. I wish he was more of a hit but he's still working.

It's just weird. A bachelors isn't particularly impressive. A Masters or a Doctorate is impressive, although even then someone naming their tripcode after one would be a douche move. Why not have named yourself "Cover Anon" or "Art Anon" or something? There's being proud of your achievements, and there's randomly broadcasting them to the world at all times in an offputting way. Naming your trip after a bachelors degree is the latter.

>If half the stories "break the mold" then what claim does it have to being the mold?
Actually I shouldn't have listed Mawdryn as one of the stories doing a lot of new stuff, cause I've just remembered it spends a lot of time reminiscing about the Brig, complete with clips of old stories when his memory comes back. You are right about the Master, though, he actually turns up like a bad penny multiple times in 19 and 20.

What I mean by "the mold" is the basic goal of making the season a big 20th anniversary celebration - there's nothing actually wrong with that, it's just decided to make stories largely about revisiting the past of the show for a while, rather than use Doctor Who to talk about things outside itself in the way Kinda or Sun Makers or something like that, which is a very specific type of ambition. (And not necessarily one everyone even enjoys).

Like, the relationship between Kinda and Snakedance is a less extreme version of the difference between the two Peladon stories, where the first one was weird and interested in Big Issues, but the second one just kind of reheated the ideas from the first in slightly different form.

But then, I'm replying to two-hour-old posts with ghastly run-on sentences, so it's very possible everything I'm saying is rubbish.

I quite like some of her earlier country stuff. Then I liked a few tracks from Red. Only a few though.

In 2014 I was working at a music store, and 1989 was on constant rotation, Luckily, I really liked that album (it's not as good a pop album as something like E·MO·TION, but it's still good and fun), so hearing it 100s of times didn't bother me too much. I hate that new single and the whole approach she's doing now so oh well.

Uhh kinda like Doctor Who in that I enjoyed their 2014 output, and they have different eras?

I dislike her as a person, but I enjoy her music. That new song is an exception, but even then after a few listens, I don't... hate it.

How can I relate this to Doctor Who? ok uhhh, songs for every doctor/companion romance ever:

A huge range of stuff, really. I wish it were possible to just link you my iTunes library and let you see for yourself. If I had to pick favourites, though, I can give you a bunch of songs for an idea of what I listen to:

>Actually I shouldn't have listed Mawdryn as one of the stories doing a lot of new stuff, cause I've just remembered it spends a lot of time reminiscing about the Brig, complete with clips of old stories when his memory comes back.

To be honest, Mawdryn Undead feels very confused as a story. It's as though it wants to try something new, but it also wants to be steeped in nostalgia and continuity.

In the end, it just leaves me baffled as to what they were trying to achieve. Although still not as baffled when Nyssa and Tegan mistook Mawdryn for the Doctor.

Hey, wait, if the Doctor Who announcement at Scifi Wales was about Dudman, that means Matt Whelan's "sources" were wrong about it concerning the relocation of the DW Experience.

>>87241618
If it was going to be, they'd make it known, or there'd at least be an article somewhere, but I can't find anything as of yet.

>>87241644
Yeah, I'm just gonna focus on Eight's stuff, I think. Really my main thing was that I was interested in the Gallifrey audios for Braxiatel (I've read a few short trips stories and stuff that included him, and I'm pretty interested in his character) and then I found out he was in the Bernice Summerfield ones, and that there's like... a huge amount of those. Became bit of a snowball effect, really. But, just gotta put it out of my mind for now and I'll consider where to go once I've worked my way through Eight's audios in their entirety.

(And, heh, you're right. If I'm going to get invested in something, it's all of it or none at all, really, which is why I'm currently having this dilemma about the audios.)

>>87241734
I highly doubt they'd snub Matt just on the basis that getting him back for the audios would probably net them far, far more money than an impersonator ever could. Presumably, anyway.

>But, just gotta put it out of my mind for now and I'll consider where to go once I've worked my way through Eight's audios in their entirety.
Yup this is the way to go. I've been listening to audios for like 8 years and have barely made the slightest dent in their overall output, there's no point trying to plan too far ahead i m o, it just gets overwhelming.
I think it's more or less feasibly impossible to listen to the entirety of Big Finish's output, and that's not even counting the fact new stuff comes out all the time too. Narrowing it down to stuff like "8's audios" then however long later when you get through them, going "Brax audios" or whatever tends to work best. But YMMV, some people do it differently.

Yeah, I think, with Doctor Who in general, and the amount of content it has, it's hard to attempt to consume it all, and you certainly can't do so in a timely manner. Latching onto a favourite and only moving on when you're done seems to be the only way to not get utterly overwhelmed. Too daunting a task to be done in any other way - at least for me.
>>
>>87241873
>I highly doubt they'd snub Matt just on the basis that getting him back for the audios would probably net them far, far more money than an impersonator ever could. Presumably, anyway.

Looking back on Torchwood, I think first two series were great. Children of Earth was great drama, but s1-2 nailed that "urban legends" setting. Cottingley Fairies episode, random time travel episode, underground weevil episodes, cannibals living in countrycide episode. I love this shit so fucking much. When Torchwood tried to be epic and imitated earth invasions - aka s1 finale it looked silly and just wrong, but urban legends were fantastic.

Hey lym... are the rumours true?

>>87245208
It's my favourite show. Hard to explain. It has a few different eras, there are 2 TV seasons from the early 90s, a feature film and a companion film from a bit later in the 90s, then another "TV" season from this year. They're all pretty tonally different. All from the director David Lynch, of many great films. It starts out as a murder mystery in a small American town, but spirals into being a much more surreal look at duality, between conflicting desires in a person, between the appearance and the reality of a town or a family, and so much more. Very much not for everyone, and very much not like typical TV.

Yes, originally I explained it was released later in parenthesis, but then thought that would be a bit overwhelming when I was just trying to explain the basics of what the show is to an anon unfamiliar with it.

I would sooner call The Missing Pieces a companion film rather than just "deleted scenes" or "unused footage" though, although I recognise you could argue the point, and I think in reality it's a kind of hybrid. But I think they form a distinct, and surprisingly coherent, work. Lynch put a lot of work into the editing and release of them, he didn't just dump them as "BONUS MATERIAL".

>>87245405
Doctor Who's a given, although my mind doesn't really jump to it when I think "TV show" because for me Doctor Who is equally audios and all that stuff too.

Opinions vary of course, but for me, it's been astonishingly brilliant. Real great culmination of Lynch's career. If you get around to watching it, just be mindful of the fact that the three eras of the show (the two 90s seasons, the film/s, the 2017 season) are very different, especially in tone and focus. They all build off each other though.

The actress comes back in some of 8's audios, but not as Grace of course due to those annoying rights issues. I think an anon told me there's a comic with 8 and Grace though.

I know nothing of Fitz really except for his Company of Friends story, but I know pre WarDoc people used to more often like the idea that 9's jacket was his, or at least an homage to it

I'd say you'll love the Charley stuff, which I'm, 99% sure you will, then I remember everyone used to say I'd enjoy Lucie and her stuff so much, then I was disappointed when I turned out to not really enjoy that, so ymmv. She was supposed to be in Vampire Science but whoever holds the rights for the TVM in the USA (Universal or Fox) didn't let BBC Books use her, so they replaced her with an original character.
She does appear in a couple of DWM comics, the funny thing is that DWM got to use her because they didn't even ask, and when the americans found out they just told them not to do it again.

>pre WarDoc people
Eh, there's nothing stopping that idea even with War as part of the line-up. I mean, when you think about it, Eight goes on to wear a leather jacket in Dark Eyes, then War wears one, and then so does Nine. Fitz's influence spreads, it would seem. (I think in one of the EDAs - though not one I've yet reached - Fitz gives the Doctor his jacket, and from descriptions it sounded as though the Doctor never handed it back, so... Maybe he kept it in the TARDIS all that time.)

A few EDA spoilers here (but no plot ones): Fitz is a kinda odd "romance," in that you could technically debate whether it was one at all. But only if you closed your eyes really tight and did your very best to ignore all the flirting - even from the Doctor's end - and the kissing and the references to Eight loving Fitz, and Fitz quite literally outright stating that he's in love with the Doctor, etc. etc. That all sounds like a lot, I know, but you'd be fucking surprised at the amount of people that jump through hoops to say they were only ever just friends. Same sort of people that tried to say Karl's attraction to Eight was utterly unrequited in The Year of Intelligent Tigers, even despite the author outright stating that their relationship was very much romantic and, uhm. Physical. Things were probably more subtle and less in-your-face than, y'know, Rose's relationship with the Doctor - although, I'd argue that that's in part because things ran a bit deeper with 8/Fitz, beyond the sort of doe-eye schoolkid romance that 10/Rose felt to be at times - but that's totally predictable given the social climate at the time of publishing. In the grand scheme of things, it wasn't that long ago, but attitudes have changed massively over the years. I still think the romance aspect is pretty clear, though. I'm sure some might argue, but, eh. I know what I've read with my own two eyes, and I trust that above all else.

NO SPACE, fuck.

Good point with the jacket. I can't specifically remember the scene of 8 putting one on in Dark Eyes but I remember there is some sort of scene about it.

>but you'd be fucking surprised at the amount of people that jump through hoops to say they were only ever just friends.
I'm 100% used to that with Doctor Who fans. Nothing wrong with it I guess, it strikes me as pretty weird honestly but it's up to them, and I suppose the character did seem functionally asexual for long enough that people have strong opinions. Seeing the McGann movie when I was like 5 normalised Doctor romance for me I guess lel.
Rose/Doctor was pretty clear, even though they barely touched, but ya know, even in NewWho, we have spirited debates on what...well, I mean, there's romance and there's romance, there's complicated stuff, but you try and start a conversation about 12 and Clara in the Cloisters and it's hard to get where you're going without people jumping and things. Anyway um yes. 11 lacking sexual chemistry with like, everyone, yet still getting loads of romance stories, was also a thing.

Why's McCoy so inconsistent in his audio performances? You get stuff like The Rapture where he's a screaming, gurning mess or Unregenerate where he just gibbers like a madman and delivers his lines like runny snot. Then suddenly he sounds amazing again in stories like The Harvest. If it's a problem with his acting range not being able to hand screaming hysteria then why do BF keep making him act out scenes like that?
>>
>>87248858
And now he's in Holby :-(. He was second choice for Robin Hood too, iirc.
>>
>>87248962
I assume it's a problem with the direction. He's not like McGann who will consistently kind of brute force the scripts to work for the style he wants for 8. You gotta whip McCoy into the shape you want a bit more, can't expect him to just coast from the script.
>>
>>87248962
>If it's a problem with his acting range not being able to hand screaming hysteria then why do BF keep making him act out scenes like that?
I think that's part of the problem, but I have a sneaking suspicion that he used to put less effort in his performance if he didn't care for the script. He was always good in the more well-written stories like The Fearmonger, The Fires of Vulcan or Master.
Anyway, he got more consistent around the time Briggs took over as producer.
>>

I rarely agree with Sandifer's approach to the audios, but he articulates something I've found as well, quite well here:

>If one wants to try to classify Doctors, one could do worse than dividing between leading man Doctors and reactive Doctors. McGann ends up in an odd place. Because his debut came out of the American cult television model he got cast firmly as a leading man Doctor to start. And that’s not what McGann seems interested in.

>Back in the TV Movie post we talked about how he’s visibly more engaged in the audition tapes than he is in the TVM. Yes, the audition tapes were off of the dreadful Leekley script with its father issues, but in those scenes he’s getting to be reactive. The scenes are about him being told information, and while they’re fundamentally about his character, they’re about his character’s reactions as things happen, not about his character taking charge and doing things. It’s when he’s put in the straight leading man role of the TVM that he visibly gets bored, because he doesn’t seem to want to flounce around being the hero.

>This makes sense. The reactive approach is the larger acting challenge, and is one of the things that makes the Doctor unique as a role: the fact that he's reactive and the hero. Unfortunately, McGann is mostly on his own in wanting to play the part that way.

>But in Storm Warning he starts to find a way to subvert that, continually underplaying lines or adding a sort of bemused detachment to them that plays more towards a reactive approach. The script, again, doesn’t quite know what to do with him here. Nor could it - Alan Barnes is necessarily writing for generic Doctor here. (It’s telling that two of the first four Eighth Doctor audios are simply adaptations of stories written for another Doctor). But it’s an interesting aspect to McGann’s Doctor.

>>87249195

My first introduction to Doctor Who was through new!who, so the romance was normalised right off the bat for me. I think, in terms of things like 12/Clara, it's debated so much because it was deliberately left ambiguous. I mean, of course, you can make very strong arguments for one side or the other, but primarily, I suppose, the reason that the majority can't seem to conclusively land on one side of the debate or the other is because that sort of reaction was almost... intentional, by deliberately not letting us know what was said in the cloisters. Frustrating, I suppose, for those that feel strongly about one side or the other. I admit, I would've been content no matter what it had turned out to be, if not ambiguous.

And, yeah. 11's uhh... romantic proclivity was certainly something. None of his romance stories worked for me. River Song, for one, could've had much more charm overall if she'd actually been paired with a Doctor that she had any sort of chemistry with (a.k.a. 12).

Also, as for Fitz, I think the controversy with him goes a little bit beyond the usual, with the fact that... well, he's a man. You know how people can be. It's one thing to have off-hand references to guy's the Doctor's kissed, or even to have Jack plant one on him, but it's quite another to have that sort of romantic tension with a long-running, very much male companion. I mean, Doctor Who in general has always been very forward-thinking and accepting, but y'know, even it has its limits. Or did. They're certainly not so harshly imposed now. Nowadays, I suspect a same-sex Doctor/companion romance wouldn't be quite as much of an administrative mountain to climb. tfw 8/Fitz will never exist, on-going, in a social climate that would've welcomed it with open arms. instead fitz gets a shitty, out-of-character excuse to boot him from the TARDIS. kek

That's a thing too, I feel like people try and box stuff in too much, not everything is either 100% platonic or 100% romantic. There's so many types of relationships and love in life. I wonder if Doctor Who ostensibly playing for kids affects this too...obviously a 30 year old is gonna have a better handle of a complicated relationship than a teenager, let alone a child. Well, good thing with the books/audios/etc is they can play right to the adult a bit more.

>It's one thing to have off-hand references to guy's the Doctor's kissed, or even to have Jack plant one on him, but it's quite another to have that sort of romantic tension with a long-running, very much male companion
I hadn't even thought of that. Naive of me.

I doubt Matt had any interest in appearing in Fantastic Beasts desu. He left Who to avoid getting typecast as the "eccentric old professor in a young man's body" type, and Newt was exactly that sort of role.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
