They made him into an interesting multilayered character and that was such a deviation from the usual cardboard-cutout Boy Scout God that it was basically a new character. Some people couldn't handle that.

All they really need to do to fix him is have him smile once in a while and look like he actually enjoys helping people.

They fucked up when they decided to turn the whole DC universe into an "it was a dark and angsty night" emofest so you couldn't tell the heroes motivations were any better than the villains. Which - talk about cardboard cutouts - they turned their villains into cardboard cutout caricatures - not even 1 dimensional, their villains are now zero dimensional.
